I think SkyPilot had a bad experience with a LASER V-twin he acquired. It was, for some unknown reason, riddled with defects. I would have been disappointed. The photo's he posted tell the story for those who care to look closely.

I would love an ENYA 240-V. Aesthetically they are truly beautiful engines. However, they are long out of production, and prices asked (and received) for them are just too far beyond common sense.

Parts support in the event of a bingle would be "interesting".

I picked up my LASER 300-V 2nd hand, though NIB, for somewhat less than NIB ENYA 240-V's bring. It pulls a GP Patty Wagstaff Extra 330 around like a saltwater crocodile with a roo leg.

And that glorious noise ... whether at idle, or ripping a 20x8 Vess at full throttle. It keeps me smiling for hours after a flight.

Enya parts are readily available from Ken Enya (enya-engine.com). They seem to be able to provide parts for many of their out of production engines as well as new ones. Just email him and ask if parts for the VT240 are available.

the one thing that i don't understand is, with the VT2.40 being so popular, why did it go out of production?

Proctor sold the Enya VT240 for $599.00 in 1990, what's that in today's dollars? Factor in inflation and if you can get one NIB for less than $850.00 you're still doing good. I have seen them go for $525.00 in flawless NIB condition. You need to be patient and lucky.

Price was one reason you didn't see many of them flying but many were sold. Today the people that have them tend to horde them.

Why don't you see many Laser 240's? Not many people know they are available and I never saw an ad for the Enya only one review in 1988? The Laser valve layout and head design is almost the same as the Laser. Laser changed the angle and made the engine wider and smoother running?

I just acquired an Enya VT-240 and emailed Enya for parts and was able to get everything I needed at very reasonable prices. Ken Enya himself responded to my email and shipment was quick and direct from Japan. I received the parts in about four business days. I did a test run yesterday and did not experience the shaking/vibration that has been suggested. It ran very smoothly an was able to swing a Bambula 20x8 prop at 7,100 rpm. I expect that number will improve as the engine breaks in. With onboard glow it would idle reliably at 1,600 rpm.

i'm looking at a good deal on one of these myself.
the vibration/shaking levels to me are probably due to the fact that some of us have experienced the smoothness of the boxer style twins which are practically vibration free.
my buddies 2.40 was used in a 30lb Waco, and it had plenty of power.
it's really too bad that Enya stopped making this engine as it seems to be more popular now than when it was in production.

Last year I rebuilt an ENYA VT-240 due to the fact that the previous owner did not add after run oil to the engine prior to storage.

The following results were obtained on a 50 F day with low humidty with a Master Airscrew Classic 20-8 prop.

Morgan Cool Power 10/20 % fuel: Max of 6.5 RPM and a min of 2000 RPM.

Power Master 20/20 % fuel: Max of 7.4 RPM and a min of 2000 RPM.

These are the first run-in numbers with output backoff and I did not adjust for good low end idle.

The engine started without incident and ran like a clock. I hope to have it mounted in a 28% Sopwith Pup by this time next year. The Pup should weigh about 25 pounds and this should be plenty of power.

Here's a short video of my VT-2.40 freshly mounted on my Top Flite Staggerwing. I was able to do the first flight today and it went great. The engine has a ton of power and pulled the 22# plane along with ease. I didn't get any mph readings but it is F-A-S-T. It's almost a shame to hide that beautiful engine under a cowl but that great twin sound is still there
