propjets4me -> OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/9/2008 11:39:49 AM)

Hey Guys .. just want to get the general feel... I might be able to get one of these engines... reason I am interested is I've heard several good comments about them...was just wondering what would be a reasonable price for one thats NIB with855 muffler + this one comes with a bisson pitts ... this all sounds good to me as I plan on installing it in a warbird about 70-74 inch span

or dont bother with supersedes and get something newer..??

cheers
Frank

There was a time when the 1.08 was the best and most powerful engine on the market.
They were, and still are brutes. The only thing I didn't like about mine was the
muffler was large and ugly, but it has to be that way. If you use the Pitts style muffler
you need to adjust the outlets so that they equal the outlet size on the stock muffler
to avoid loss of fuel pressure issues. It also has a great carb that produces a really
reliable engine run.

If you can get the engine and Pitts for between 200-250, you have a killer engine. [;)]

Thanks for the comments there Flyboydave, ..I know what you mean about the bulky muffler, I wasn't planning on using that as it also comes with the header pipe adapter to run a tuned pipe.. I wouldn't run it for speed of course but it could should be good on a long pipe like the classic pattern planes that ran hannos or YS fire long strokes..only other thing I dont like about it is ..they are a heavy engine...but the many references to its power, that makes its so attractive to me

cheers

....cheers back to ya', Frank. If there ever was a "big block" OS, the 1.08 fits the description.
You might just need that weight in the front of the warbird. I prefer to add "engine" up front....

....not lead. [:D]

Ive heard nothing but impressive comments on the 108FSR. The new version of the 108FSR nowadays is the 120AX which I own & love very much. (Which I guess is just a little more powerfull than the 108 and a bit more easy on the fuel as they have different port sizes.)

Either way; you will have a very strong & long lasting engine.

masama1107 -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/9/2008 1:26:39 PM)

Propjet4me,
In my opinion, the O.S. 108 FSR is by far the best engine OS ever made. I own two of those engines and the power, reliability and long lasting characteristics of that specific engine are bar none the best.
You can't go wrong with it. If you decide not to buy it, please let me know, I will.

BarracudaHockey -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/9/2008 2:37:25 PM)

It works out great on this one and I got a spare NIB engine from someone that owed me less than 100 bucks and couldn't sell his motor.

Walt and Sage -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/9/2008 4:39:04 PM)

LOVE the motor and the plane !!!!...[:)]

BarracudaHockey -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/9/2008 5:11:03 PM)

If you "love" the 90 you'd be positively delerious with the F100 and that motor [:D]

proptop -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/9/2008 9:31:08 PM)

I got one...mostly because of it's reputation as a real nice engine...and the fact that a good friend sold his NIB to me for $125.00

It's a big, heavy chunk of power...you can feel the quality in it's heft.[8D]

jessiej -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/9/2008 10:12:32 PM)

I agree with all the good things said about the 108 FSR. I have one of the earlier ones -pre remote carb, and it is one of my all time favorite engines. Brute power, faultless reliability and great longevity.

The stock OS108 muffler robs power and adds a lot of weight. A 108 works well with a Macs 15cc muffled tuned pipe. They are easy to set up and IMO a must have item worth about a thousand rpm over the stock muffler. They do have a big carb and need to run 10,000 rpm or more to draw fuel well. My 108 has turned an APC 14-8 at 11,400 for over one hundred flights on Omega 5%. I recently lengthened the pipe and installed an APC 15-8 that tached 10,000 on the same fuel. I would pay up to $190 for a new one.

great to hear this guys and thanks for all the comments, so as for me, enough said... I think I might get this one if the price is fair

Cyclic Hardover -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/10/2008 2:16:40 PM)

I have 3 of them. Very good engines. Better than the 120ax

jessiej -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/10/2008 7:15:07 PM)

I forgot to add that my OS 108 has never been touched by an electric starter or chicken stick. A very reliable, gentle and easy starter.

If you need any parts for a 1.08FSR, aren't you sorta, well.... up a creek?

Cyclic Hardover -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/11/2008 2:13:46 AM)

No, there's enough of them around if you really need one

Except the great 7D carb. I guess you could build a carb from parts, or pay the price online.

If you want a new crank, you better hurry.

Parts in the aftermarket are plentiful though.

I happen to have 2 of these engines, one in a Goldberg Extra and the other in pieces awaiting bearings.
One of the best around.[:D][:D]

propjets4me -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/11/2008 3:21:12 PM)

good point about the parts ..but to tell you the truth, in my twenty odd years in this hobby, I have yet to buy an engine part apart from spinner nuts or muffler bolts..apart from that if any engine did suffer a substantial failure eg crank , rod/piston, I would probably opt for a replacement engine

blw -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/11/2008 3:36:20 PM)

Some people just enjoy working on them. Also, some manufacturers price parts where they are economical for repairs. Some are just too expensive, which is a shame.

Flyboy Dave -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (1/12/2008 1:14:16 AM)

If a Guy really wanted to, it wouldn't hurt to order a ring, ring clips, a wrist pin, and
a set of gaskets. The bearings are available anywhere. If he did wear out the ring
he could easily refresh the engine and fly for another 10 years.

I did wear out the ring on an OS .60 FSR, but it took 15 years. [;)]

You mentioned that the big carb makes it hard to draw fuel. I've been having trouble with my 108 quitting mid flight and having to dead-stick in. I've tried every adjustment. I've replaced the entire fuel system including the tank and hoses. Tried omega 10% and powermaster 15%. Tried 5 different(new) glow plugs. Still quits. Runs like a top on the ground. Do you think I have a fuel draw problem? I'm running a 15/4 prop. Is that to much? Do I need more rpm to keep fuel flowing? I'm at a frustrating point and don't want to spend much more time figuring this out. I'm a flier, not a tweaker.

Oh yeah... and I'm using a pitts muffler which sounds awesome to me.

gunfighterII -> RE: OS 108 FSR.. would you still get one? (5/2/2008 9:59:11 PM)

Yes, you'll have a fuel draw problem with the Pitt's.

Try blocking one of the outlets and see if that helps.
Or as a last resort, install a pump. Or a Cline if you prefer.
