I made my own a123 5s pack. I plan to charge it in the plane and not take it out for charging. My question is:

Do a123 packs need lot of ventilation? I plan to snugly pack my battery-pack with foam all over, is it ok? Will they EVER get heated and melt the foam etc? If so what do I use instead of foam to fill the gaps in the fuse against the batterypack?

Pls share your experiences!
tks

I have been flying A123 packs (4S2P) in my Telemaster Electro, Eliminator, Rascal 40 and a couple of others since June 06 - 2 or 3 outings a week. I have not noticed any significant heating with the A123 packs.

I guess I should qualify this by saying that max current on each pack is 15 amps, not exactly a heavy load. And most of the the time I am flying at less than wide open throttle. Packs are held in place with a loop of velcro so there is some air flow.

Heating is relative to the discharge rate and air flow or lack thereof.

All of my packs are secured with velcro and velcro straps and have open air space around them with ventilation and yes they get warm. My non heat shrinked packs built from De walt packs run the cooliest and my SPT solderless power tube packs run the hottest which is logical as these cells get the least air flow due to the tubes and end caps.

How warm / hot?

In Sept. at 85F ambient I have had the SPT packs reach 130F in my 300 Extra when flown down in 5 mintes. This is a 650 watt set up and the average discharge rate is 26 amps. with burst close to 60 amps.

I have similiar heating in my MUS and Yak 54 also.

Anything over 125F is not best for the cells and 140F plus is especially not good for them. They will survive but number of cycles will be reduced, perhaps more than by any other means.

I just temporarily wrapped my 5s pack in a polythene bag tightly so I can take out if needed. Other than shorting , are there any other dangers like rust....if these devault cells are not covered?
