I am ready to switch from Li-ion to A123 for my giant planes and i was wondering if i have to buy a new charger like FMA cell pro with balancer plug or i could use nanophosphate charger without balancer? I already have the Fromeco Ion-cube charger and i could simply buy nanophosphate ports to charge A123 but the Ion cube can not balance the cells.

Do we really need a balancer for the 2 cell A123 packs? I am not looking for fast charge at the field and i'll use 2x 2300mA on the receiver.

Status: offline 		While the standard charge to voltage is 3.6 per cell charging higher such as 4.1 or even 4.2 does not do any serious damage to them. It may reduce thier life from 1000 ccyles to closer to 500 to 700 cycles but I find that no big issue.

I have a 3S which has been charged at 15-20 amps. (6-8 min charges) to between 3.8 and 4.15 volts per cell all but 20 charges and it now has 311 flights on it and still performs just like the first flight.

I would say use a charger with Li Ion setting (4.1 per cell)if available . I would recomend charging the cells in parallel to get them balanced and it would be best to discharge them and recharge / balance a few cycles . I have found that new cells tend to drift for the first 5-10 cycles.
You can always charge then one at atime to rebalance them every 20 cycles or so. If you do not use more than 2000 mAh from them they stay balanced very well. Do not bother to check balance when they are below 3.5 volts per cell.

Status: offline 		Well as you will be using them for receiver pack in a large / expensive plane I would error on the safe side by flying for X amount of time,flights and see how much it takes to recharge them.

The discharge curve of these cells is extremely flat and when the voltage starts to drop it drops big time. Some of the 30% gas flyers pull 1000 mAh out in a 10min. flight and some less tahn half of that.
