During a discussion of what type of events our club would like to hold this year the idea of an all out speed event came up. Has anyone else tried this? We are in the begining of planning and have a few rules that we are sure of. Propeller and ducted fan models only .61 max engine No fuel or airframe restrictions pending safety inspection Twins will be permitted pending safety inspection Electrics welcome and encouraged All models will be thoroughly inspected for saftey and solid construction, if you don't want us poking around then you can't fly Wreckless pilots will be asked to land and not fly again Mandatory engine shut-off capability will be tested before take off (trim shut down for throttle and fuel supply shut-off for non-throttle) Just fly past the gun FAST!!! The idea is to have 2-4 pass fly-bys of a high quality radar gun. High speeds will be recorded. All models will recieve a certificate of speed. Models will be allowed as many chances through the trap as time permits. We most likely will be pretty hard handed on model safety and flight skills especially the first time around. If you are in NC, SC, VA, TN I would really like to hear if you are interested.

Bro, you know this is an open invite! I have my doubts how many of my left coast brothers of speed would be able to make it to my humble club for a day like this tho. I look forward to a fun event if my club will get behind it.

Vicman, you may want to look at the rules that they use for the German Speed Cup and try to stay consistent with that. Who knows what it will grow into??

Depends on rules (we don't need no stinkin' rules), date and location... I have some 100mph electric foamies....[:D] I'll build a 120mph funjet..... stir stir....[;)]

If not you might try http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr for a page translation. Not sure what to do about the PDF file other then translate a piece at a time or learn German

Thanks for the German event links. I don't think we will have too many guys going all out like they do over there...I could be wrong. Hence no rules on airframe etc. This is more of a bring your fast junk out and have fun. We have a line on a high end radar gun (not the bushnell fly on top of one). The idea will be to have it mounted on a tripod at a fixed angle for one pass and rotate to catch the model on it's second pass. The pilot will need to be skilled enough to make it thru the gun's window of operation.

I didn't say I was flying.[X(] Glad this isn't the AMA forum or I would be lambasted for the lack of then the overbearing rules for this thing. Demonstrating safe consistant flight...are you that skilled EVAN? I look forward to seeing the Green Meanie.[8D]

Vicman does this qualify? The good one is on the left! The right one was included for part's for the one on the left! The one on the left was said to be the fastest left turner! I was thinking about going all out and putting a JETT in it! A little sanding, some paint and wheel's and I'm there! Well, maybe I should of gone with an "ARF RACER"? After Christmas and the economy this is all I could financially muster! (Ignore my sign on the bottom. It's way out of date!) SJ[:D]

I'll probably bring electric, it is our furure.... I might bring the Twin Outlaw but odds are I wouldn't fly it, it's just too finicky. My other glow planes I just don't consider fast, Magnums good for an honest buck sixty in a dive, 155 level at best, I gave my DD away (yes gave, motor, radio, ready to fly) and everything else is slower and I feel if I don't bring 180+ then it's not really a speed event, right? My 400 pylon is easily propped to 160 and I'm trying to piece together a 200mph+ F5D ship.

Evan, It would be cool no matter what you bring. I'm sure there will be some warbirds with Webra and Jetts show up to see what they can muster. That's the fun part. SJ, I got a thousand words for ya bro.[>:]

Vic - Thanks for posting this question and thanks for the great responses. I think our (Caldwell Aero Modelers http://www.caldwellaeromodelers.com) hope is to have a fly-in at the field that will be: fun!! different no too complicated AND offer a chance for guys who like speedier type planes to get together, share, and enjoy this great hobby I want to keep it simple, very simple. There will be an inspection for safety . . . and that is about it. I don't want anyone getting hurt, but I want to see cool-fast planes. It is what I like and I don't know of anyone doing anything like this. My life if governed by rules, too many. I'm not inviting an extra rules into my hobby. We would allow turbines, but our fabric runway would melt (not cool). Thanks for all the good responses. - Seth

The historical date for our fly-in is the 4th weekend of June . . . that would the 28th this year.

if you have a limit on .61 displacement... should there be a limit on "watts" for the electric guys ??? its only fair, no?

I'd put an entry fee on the event fairly high. If a contestant exceeds 175 mph, they get half back. Break 200, and they get it all back. Fastest guy above 200 gets everyone elses lunch money.

.61 max would be pretty gay.... A lot of the warbirds are running big YS engines and I'm sure they would like to compete as well. Also, take in to consideration wild one off speed planes like Sir charles's Slip Stream.... it's a .91. I can understand no jets... and no "anything that looks deadly" but .61..?...?... Go Big!

well i guess that to collect the money only f5d and f3d type of planes will win. and Q-40 the rest of them will be playing catch up.

That's why I'll have an F5D... well, not to win any money as I don't really agree with that. I think that it should be a regular ol' fly in just that it's geared for faster planes. THIS IS JUST MY THOUGHTS AND I DON"T WANT TO INTERFERE WITH WHAT THE CLUB WANTS TO DO. I'm not to sure of the fabric runway, I guess I need to go up one weekend to see what thats about. I have the date set aside. I have zee airplanes, well, I have enough to fill the back of my truck especially if I take glow planes. If I only take lekies I could drive the car... hmmm... BTW Vicman, I did get a pylon plane from Don. We'll be voting wether to do trainer or his skyraider calss at the field this year. I need to go see you and you need to come see us!
