Hey guys i was wondering what you thought about the flat bat plane? Nomally i would just ask the people at my club but no one flys it. They either fly the rain gutter plane or the round bat plane. I don't like the round bat for the fuse because the wings are a pain in the butt to get streight. I also don't like the rain gutter plane because the rain gutter cracks too easily. So for me the flat bat plane seems like the logical choice because i get a strong fuse with a flat surface to mount the wing. I fly the stock os 25 fx w/o the baffle in the muffler. I just cut out 18 pairs of wings the other night. They are 64 inches long and have a 8.5 inch root and a 5 inch tip. any one else flown this setup? As you can see i really want to build alot of planes this winter so i don't want to get stuck with 18 crappy planes. The plane i used to fly was a slasher and i had three at one point all ready to go. I really decided to start building alot of planes this winter so spending 70+ dollars on a kit did not seem like much sense. let me know what you guys think.
thaks
-Matt

Wouldn't it be better to cut one set of wings and then tweek the design till it was
as close to perfect as you were willing to accept, and then build 17 more copies of it ????

Why are you building 18 combat planes? Are they for the next ten years? 18 ought to last a long time! Unfortunately I can't help much with the flat-bat issue. Good luck!

The flat bat should work just fine. I don't know where to get the bat but you might ask Charlie in your area he flies bats with very good results.

He must get a real healthy discount on stock OS 25fx w/o baffles.

or

He is going to invite us all to Montana to fly combat and he will supply the planes !!!!

yah i'm sorry i guess i should of stipulated. The wings are not all for me. they are for my buddy to. As for the wing design, it's what every one at the club uses so i'm not concerned about performance. Charlie does not fly the flat bat plane he flys the round one or at least i've never seen him with the flat bat plane. I know Phil at our club uses it but he is really busy and i've not seen him in a while to ask him about it. I'm not sure i'm going to build all the wings but it's nice to have a stock of them just in case. Ideally i would like to have six planes ready to fly. Why six? well six is more than three (three was just not enough last year for a real bad day) and six is also the model capacity for my futaba 6xas. Also at our club we really only do the wing cutting once a year in the winter and since i don't have any of the tools for the job i would rather have way too many wings than run out. honestly it's 60 dollars worth of pink foam and i have 18 wings. That really should last a long time. Not mad or anything it just seems as people only posted to question why i made so many wings and not to give insight on the flat bat plane design. I'm really curious to know things like what firewall material works the best. what engine mount should I buy. How big should the tail feathers be. Will a micro servo be enought for the throttle so as to save on wight and material cut from the bat. How long should the fuse be. Where do i cut the front and back. any help would be great. I know 18 wings is alot but what can i say i got the combat itch plus i'm really board this winter (wife won't let me buy and more "big planes" .
thanks
-Matt

HOWDY,
Flat bats work great and so do 'bout any bat. I have made planes from the dollar store skinny ones, regulation wiffle ball bats and the big fat orange kid bats at wally world. If you just google " flat bat" you will get a slew of sources. Have fun.

Matt,
I belive Charlie had a FlatBat at my last contest. At any rate goto www.spadtothebone.com and look up flatBat, as the have plans for one. May give you some ideas about where to cut holes how to mount the engine, etc.

I think mike fredricks still has the flat bat kits and parts. www.hattrickrc.com i think is his site. A couple guys up in detroit still fly them as well and do pretty well with them. most are going to fence post now.
