Thanks for the info guys. I will try to reduce as much weight as possible, and I did notice the tail feathers are pretty heavy. Sanded most of the tail portion off this afternoon. I am going to instal hinges for my tail wheel doors. I have cut out the area for the hinge. These will be glued in and when cured, the doors will be cut away. Giving me a perfect fitting door. This will also enable me to remove the doors so I can get into some hard to reach locations when finishing the construction.

That is definately not a NO NO. Love your gear.
I am going to use a modified Robart tail wheel that will be mounted further forward than the location shown on the plans. I am opening the gear doors all the way forward so I will also be modifying the rudder former.
Post more pics of your Corsair..............I am feeling kind of lonely on here

Any tips with regards to the tail set up?

Craig

Craig, you might want to have a look in the Corsair brotherhood thread about ways to save weight in the tail of that bird of yours, things like cutting out as much meat from the hidden sheeting for example and by punching holes in ribs etc etc will save you a bucket load of nose weight.

cheers
Peter

Tumbs up on that!!

That is another reason I am moving the gear forward to the scale position. This will lessen the weight at the rear. I want to make it as light as possible.

Actually, this is a DEFINITE NO NO!
The tail wheel unit that WhoDaMan sent me needed to be mounted farther forward than the vertical L.E. spar bulkhead. This unit was made for the Top Flite Corsair and I goofed.

WRONG> As it was installed it the picture in post 277, the tail wheel when retracted rests at the stab T.E. and the arrestor hook hangs out the back too far.

RIGHT> The tail wheel strut should be nearly in line with the rudder hinge line when extended and rest just aft of that when retracted. It's not right on but it's close enough I think. Although this unit is very nice it doesn't have the capability to compress like the real thing so it still rests aft of the rudder hinge line....but not as bad as the first installation. You can see what I had to do to the rudder former to allow clearance for this unit. I also cut the doors out to extend them farther forward.

I'm also in the process of making some close out covers to conceal the main retract units. I will post pics of those when I get them done.

Les

I was wondering if you guys are using the Derlin plug in system for your rudder activation. I was curious to what other systems could be used to guarantee a solid rudder if this is not suitable.

Been working on my kitchen, and in the spare time I have been shaping and fitting the tail feathers. Still plenty to do. Decided to set it up in my living room and took a few pics. Progressing slowly, but I am happy with the way she is turning out.

Craig,
It's looking very nice. I think you may be a little further ahead on yours now than I am on my buddies! Keep it up and you might be able to fly it before summer is over.

Craig,
Not sure if you have gotten to it yet or not, but I wanted to let you know of an issue I had with using the Dubro hinges for the tail wheel doors. I tried your same method, glueing the hinges to the inside of the fuse and the doors and the edge of the doors would hit the skin before opening even 1/2 inch. I even tried shimming the door side of the hinge with 3/32 inch ply but all that did was cause the door to stick out farther from the skin . What I ended up doing is ripping them off and I am thinking of using BVM offset door hinges. I will admit that rigging door hinges has not been my cup of tea, but I have found that the offset door hinges always work well for me. I guess if you were to use a continous strip of piano hinge as is on the full scale, the hinge line gap wouldn't be noticed as if you only use 3 Dubro hinges. Maybe you had better success with how you did it and can educate me on how to rig doors using the Dubro hinges?

Maybe I will opt for the piano hinge after all instead of the offset hinges... not sure...depends on what I can get the quickest. WhoDaMan?....... Need input.

Here are a few pics of the cover I made for the retracts.

on my P47 I used the piano style hinges, worked very well. Forget where I got em from but was over your side of the pond. also used em for access hatches as like you I just hate doing these hinged doors, still trying to pefect the technique

Hey guys
Les, those dubro hinges are not working out for me either, funny, have not touched the corsair in a while when they did not work. I think the piano hings may be the way to go that Peter is suggesting. Great looking covers for the mains. I will also do a simular set up, that way I can get inside to do maintenance.
I realy should get my act together and press on with the build. So many other things occupying my time. Keep the pics coming Les, feel free to post away.

Craig

guys I got them from Nelson Hobby Specilaities.

Pic attached

the ones I got have the hinge pin offset so you do not get the binding probs that the dubro ones give.

LOL. I just had them ship me some! Nelson Hobby Specialties is only about 35 minutes from my house but it is more convenient to have them delivered.

Craig, I am sorry you had the same troubles with the hinges. I was hoping you would have figured it out so you could let ME know! LOL.
When I get the piano hinges installed I'll post some pics. Right now I am putting together a JMP T-33 for a buddy to help pay for the repairs to my F-15 that caught fire.

I dont want to hijack the thread but since this is a BUILD thread..... everyone likes to see carnage anyway. So, I will only post 2 pics of the aftermath and no more.

Actually, I can tie this in with the Corsair.... When you fly turbine powered planes, the risk of fire is much greater than if you fly lets say... warbirds with ignition engines such as the Corsair. There I did it.

As I said, I dont want to hijack this thread. But to sum it up.....it caught fire. LOL
While I was starting the engine for the 3rd flight of the day, (we believe) that the stainless exhaust pipe collapsed and melted allowing the flame to enter the back of the fuse and wreak havoc. 2 extinguishers later I am left with this trophy. Repairs are soon to be made and it will fly again.

Now as far as the Corsair goes....DAVE!....I got the Carbon pushrods from Central Hobbies today....WAY NICE. I am using 3/16 diameter carbon rods with titanium 4-40 threaded inserts for the Rudder, Elevator, arrestor hook and the tail wheel. These are light and stout as anything. I think these are a much better choice than Sullivan Nyrods as they are light and as stiff as a 4-day-old dead dog on the side of the road. The servos are going to be mounted on the forward edge of the large access hole on the bottom of the fuse so the 36 inch rod is long enough and I will only have to cut off a little bit. The 24 inch rod is too short to do this. Pics to come sometime in the near future when I actually Git-R-Done.

Forgot to post the link to for the pushrods:

OUCH..............that F-15 dows need some serious work

I am planning on using the same rods for my linkage as well. Have been slowly dabling with the Corsair. I am working on shaping the elevators, and removing the trim tabs. Lots of sanding and balsa filling. Hope to post some pics soon. I am waiting for my Robart tail wheel, then the pace will begin to pick up. I will post some pictures as I progress. I asked this question a while back, did you guys use the rudder set up that comes with the kit, or did you modify it in any way?

Craig
