I am planning on using the stock rudder setup that came with the kit. I need to verify that the tail wheel I am using will not interfere but I don't think it will be any issue. That square drive seems to be fairly secure and as a matter of fact, I saw the same type of drive rods used for the flaps on a turbine model so it shouldn't be any problem.

Hey Guys

I've been enjoying this thread since I have bought a Byron Corsair kit fairly recently. I have been wanting one for many years and finally got one. Mine has the Purr-Power system with the 3-bladed prop. However, after stewing on it for a while I have about talked myself out of building it. Reason? If I ding a prop blade I'm out of business since a replacement blade would be unavailable and there is a special adapter required to use a standard 2-blade prop. This would also probably be unavailable.

Anyone have any info or advice that would help me make the big decision? It would be appreciated.

Bill

Hi Bill:
When using the Purr-power, I had it on my other two Corsairs, The problem with the plastic props is that at high RPM they lose there pitch and you can see them flatten out. I went with the 4.2 swinging a 22x10 Menze 3 blade prop, When using the 2 blade you can get a lot of torque on take off, two much speed and you can really see the tail wag on this plane.

Take care,,,, Dave

Thanks for the response, Dave. Did you mean that you used the Menz 3-blade with the Purr-Power mount or did you not use the Purr-Power? According to the instructions there is a special adapter required for using other than the Byron prop supplied. I'm sure I couldn't get the adapter from Iron Bay. The Purr-Power engine & mount is already installed in this case (not by me but done with excellent workmanship) so I don't have the option of not using it. I would love to not use the Byron prop because, as I said, if I ding a blade I'm out of business. I concur with the flattening pitch of plastic props and don't like them. The Menz would be the answer if it could be adapted to the Purr-power.

Hi Bill:
Yes I was running the purr power with the 4.2 and the menz prop. I am sure you can get the single bolt to put on your engine, Are you running the 4.2?

Hi Dave
Yes, I have the A&M 4.2 with Purr-Power. However, I can't see how a single bolt could be used for the Menz prop. The engine has a short threaded shaft and the cast hub on the Byron prop has the magnet in it for the magnetic pickup sensor for the C-H ignition. I'm thinking that, somehow, you have a different 4.2 engine or a different ignition. The Byron Pow'r Prop drawing shows an alternate 2-blade hub which is configured to accept the magnet. This could be used for the Menz 3-blade if the hub was available. With Iron Bay out of the modelling business I don't believe I could get one.
I would sure be interested to learn more details of your setup.
Thanks for your responses.

Hi Bill:
I understand what you are saying I was running the Brisson 4.2 single bolt system. As far as the sensor on the hub I am sure that is you talked with the guy's at CH ignition they can sort that out for you.

Glad to see others posting here

The horizontal stab is now glassed, and the weave filled. I am going to begin attaching the horizontal stab to the fuselage. The plywood rear spar is ready as well as the forward dowel I will use for extra support. I will be using Hysol for the butt joint against the fuse, and gorilla glue for the dowel that fits into the foam, and on the rear spar against the foam.
I drilled small holes on the fuse, to allow the hysol to be squeezed in the holes to help with security. I also roughed up the dowel and the forward edge of the plywood spar. When I attach them, I will also use a screw on the inside to help draw the butt joint as tight as possible, this should give me a good solid bond.

Elevators are completed. I am going to add the trim tabs and booster tabs as well. They still require more detailed shaping and sanding after the horizontal stab is in place.

Did some work on the Corsair, on and off the past couple of weeks. The horizontal stabs are now attached and very solid. The rudder post is also installed using Hysol, and .75 oz cloth with some polyester resin to seal the wood. The join seem is pretty much concealled and the leading edge has been shaped sanded, primed and will be sanded again. I want to finish most of the tail work before it is permanently attached the the forward fuselage section. Much easier to work with like this.

I had a Byron Hellcat and Corsair. The best set-up is no Purr-power , get a bison Pitts style exhaust. Now for the prop, you can get the adapter from CH Ignition or Ralph Cunningham. The best prop is the Bolly 23x10 2 blades.

The prop adapter is a single bolt one, remove the cast aluminum hub from the shaft, then install the prop shaft adapter then bolt the single bolt plate. easy to do.

I still have one at home I can send pictures of the set-up if needed.

This is a good flying airplane, I am still missing mine, corn fields are not very forgiving

Now I have my robart tail wheel unit and about to install it. I am using aircraft grade ply for the two mounts. These will be hysoled into the fuse. When set I will add some support to the two pieces, connecting them together. I will also put a support in from the top piece to the top of the fuse. I want to save weight and it should be plenty strong, also it will leave room for my elevator and rudder linkage. A spacer will be added to give me the length needed for a more scale look, and when it is retracted, the wheel will show through the doors.

Presently I have not glued the rail system in as of yet. I did glue the vertical pieces into location which will tie the unit together. When I glue the rails in, I will support the top rail up to the top of the fuselage for support.
