Paul,
That's a great video. I would love to live where I could get more than 4 months of warm flying season each year!
That was a pretty gutsy move sucking up the gear at 10" of altitude! (between 33 & 34 seconds into the video)
What's the prop on your G-62 and what are you turning for revs?

I thought about using my BME-50 in project #3 as it was too heavy for my GP Ultimate (bent the gear and took out the prop on hot days). It would turn a 22x10 nicely at 7600 rpm and took my 18# Ultimate straight up.
I recently saw a couple of DL-50's showing similar performance but with far more vibration. The DA50 was the shining star for performance, low vibration, and light weight but spendy.

I know what you're saying when you see guys driving overpowered birds into the ground. They just do not understand energy management. I think its a hold over from their nitro experience "when in doubt - power it out".
I bought my DA85 for my Ziroli Corsair and my 3 blade 24" Solo Prop. I just want to turn a big beautiful prop and fly as scale as possible. Wayne is building an adapter for the DA85 and some spare blades for my next bird.

Steve,
It's good you had the Wedding Saturday as the weather just stunk. I thought I heard Daffy Duck singing in the rain!
Let's get together and talk Corsairs at a Scale Flyers Meeting (last Friday in Oct). Maybe we can get Bob T to come and bring his TF Corsair.

Craig,
You'll have to take the family to Disney World once you get back (family time) and visit Paul's flying site (me time) to get inspiration!
Stay safe buddy!

Scott

A General Question for Anyone flying a Byron's Corsair:

When using a G-62 How much weight do you need to add to the nose?

Obviously it all depends on how much detail you've added (full cockpit vs. cut-off) behind the CG.

So I am very interested in a poll:

(Engine), (total plane weight) , (amount of weight added to the nose to balance)
as an example:
(G62), (24#), (2-1/2#)

It would be VERY interesting to get a spectrum of answers.

Thanks!

Scott

That was really interesting.
I looked at the differences between the Robart Model #150 & the #150B and then went through the Corsair pictures posted on RCU. Both types have been used.
If you are flying for enjoyment, either one looks scale, but if you are more serious the #150B is better.
I have (4) sets I acquired through someone elses projects and it seems to be evenly divided.

What I am interested in learning is what did Paul use for tail gear retract for his Top Gun Corsair and how did he get the tailhook to work?

I used an Earle Aune tail wheel and set up th tail hook on a micro servo . I have the flaps on my right slider on my 14mz and the tailhook on the left. By the way I use a xoar 22x10 on my g-62 and I am turning about 6950 at the moment.
good luck
Paul

Can somebody answer a question about the Sig aluminum wing joiner system in the Byron Corsairs? It only gives the length of 3". I need the height of the C-Channel and I would like to know how wide it is. Also what are the dimentions other than 9" long on the bar. Is it 1/8" and what is the wall thickness of the C-Channel? Thank you very much in advance.

I have to admit, I am very impressed by the builders in this post and the information that is given. I always wanted to buy a Byron Corsair, but when they were available I could not afford them, now, as mentioned earlier, it is a hit and miss with Iron Bay. Due to this situation, I have ordered all the gear to build a Ziroli Corsair when I return home myself. Craig, I understand the position that you are in, as I am in a portion of the world in the general area that you are. Keep your head down and get home to the family and your project. Thank you very much for all you do!

Sorry Barry. I guess everyone's been a little quiet here.
I discussed something similar on the 1/6th Scale Corsair thread recently.
I hope your project is going well. I'll have to stop by sometime. I get to Madison occasionally to visit my daughter.

Best,
Scott

SUBSCRIBED!

At approx. 11 AM Eastern, on Black Friday 2009: I will become an un-official member of the 'Byron Corsair Owner's Club'.
It is a kit (not built yet), but missing small some parts. Most significant missing parts are stab cores, but fabricating an all balsa one shouldn't be a problem.
It comes with Robart retracts (mains only), but they are used, rusty looking, and may need some work also.
But the price was right, and I've always wanted one of these.
I want to go all out on it in details, even add folding wings. Already has optional sliding canopy, but may need some (or all) of the cockpit details (maybe Top Flite Giant Scale Corsair will work?)
Finish/ Sceme: Definately NOT Ira Kepford's, ditto on any that Pappy flew. Nothing against them, just too many of them around already. I'm considering "122", ya know: the one that completed 100 combat missions and never had to turn back for mechanical reasons/ the only US aircraft to recieve some sort of congressional award. Tri-color, w Brewster bomb rack. I would probably leave the 100 hash marks off tho, as they were probably applied for publicity photos only.
Also, I don't like 2 stroke engines, so I'm thinking BIG Saito (maybe even twin).

Anyway, just checking in. I won't be able to post more info until Sunday (gotta travel to go get it).

Congratulations & Welcome!
I bought my first Byrons Corsair ready to fly from a friend. It's been a ball to fly and there is nothing like a Corsair in a fly by!
Since then Ive bought two more projects to make like I want.
I bought Earl Aune style tail gear from DaddySam with operating tailhooks.
I'm looking forward to working on them!
I'm scanning the instructions and I'll put them up. I'm sure you could use the TF cockpit kit. I'm planning to use it as well.
Enjoy!
Scott

Hi guys

Having used 2 of the T/F cockpits they leave a lot to the emagination for scale, so if you can find the old Dione subackus (spelling) thread and have any excess to vac-forming go there, also there is an old thread from a fellow in Canada that has a lot of good sugestions I will see if I still have the link and will post

Cheers Bob T

Happy Thanksgiving

Is Byron back on track and selling new kits? I always wanted one of their Corsairs. If they are I just have to have one for my Corsair collection. I heard they look and fly Great. I would do mine in the gray and black Marine paint scheme. Let me know if they are up and running again. I called their number and it sounds like they are.

I'm using your rails for my next Corsair.

I just read the entire thread, and here are some observations:

1) the Byron wing inlets/ oil coolers are actually worse looking than the Top Flite ones, so I intend to use Top Flite ones as a starting basis for mine
2) the Byron cowl appear to have an area at the bottom that does NOT have a cowl flap? That same area also has one of the horizontal cowl attachement plates molded in? For the record:
.... a) Corsairs cowl have cowl flaps all the way around, except at the top.
.... b) there are 3 straps on the cowl (1 on top, the other 2 at approx 4 O'clock and 8 O'clock positions). These straps are what the 3 cowl 'shells' attach to.
3) The majority of builders are having to add some weight to the nose to acheive proper CG?

That all said: I will see what I can do with mine to keep it light and make it look more scale accurate.

Diony-sus-whatever is a very tempermental guy. We started out as 'enemies' about 10 years ago, then we became friends, then he got mad at me and now refuses to communicate and/ or do business with me (I hear I am not alone). Me getting anything from him is not an option.

I DO have an old Mattel Vaccu-Form kit (anybody old enough to remember them?), which I occasional use to make parts for my warbirds, so: fabricating some parts IS an option. Maybe I should get the TF cockpit kit and modify it?

Byron has been out of the hobby business for many years now. A company known as Iron Bay took over the assets and was (is?) manufacuring and marketing some of the 'Byron' kits, including the Corsair. Iron Bay however, is not making much profit from the kit sales, and is focused more on it's miltary sales which ARE more profitable so that it can remain in business.
The kit that I will be picking up tomorrow is from another modeler, who has chosen to sell it. From what I am reading: MOST of these kits (Byron AND Iron Bay) are being purchased second hand.

I've been trying to contact Iron Bay for months now. No response to telephone calls or e-mails.
No problem though, I've found good prices for unfinished projects.

The Byron Corsair is a sweet flying bird and the fiberglass construction makes it quick to build.
Thank goodness that we're back into the building season!
Scott

Bob,
Will you be at the Scale Flyers meeting Friday or do I have to see you at breakfast Saturday?

There is a brand new kit with retracts, engine, and Purr-Power system for sale here in the Phoenix area at Duncan's R/C. I think the seller was asking $1200 for the entire package if anyone is interested.

Brought my pride and joy home today. Good thing I took it to a hotel first: gave me a chance to clean out the bugs and spider webs in a bath tub other than the one at home.
Asside form that, only other problem (other than previously stated ones) is the canopies. I have both versions (sliding, non-sliding), but both are less than perfect, and it's pretty difficult to clean up a canopy (remove scrathes, paint, etc.).

SO, given the slow responses that I am, hearing about with Iron Bay: has anyone tried a Top Flite GS canopy? For that matter, I wonder just how many parts from that kit (which IS nearly the same size) would look right on the Byron/ Iron Bay Corsair? By looking right: I mean close to perfect in scale, and/ or no worse than a Byron/ Iron Bay part.

BTW: I picked mine up for $600, which includes a set of slighty rusty Robart 150s. So, altho I will have a little extra work involved (cleaning it all up, fabicating a stab, purchasing hinges), it was well worth it to me. Like I said: I've always wanted one, and an opportunity came along that I couldn't pass up.

That's the beauty of picking up a project that was too much for someone else. You get a great price but you have some clean up work to do.
The TF canopy should work fine. I was lucky in that I got a new slider with one of my projects. I'm going to see if I can make a new mold so I can pull a spare.
Check to see if they built it with the trailing edge spar for the horizontal stab.
One of my projects does not and it looks like they just butt joined the stab to the fuse. I'll be ripping it out and rebuilding it.
Here are some pictures of #3.
Enjoy!

I've built the 1/8 scale TF Corsair and the GS TF Corsair is pretty well along the way. The Ziroli Monster will be my third wood built up plane when that is finished. I also have a DS 1/4 scale that needs to be torn partially apart and rebuilt. Two kits and two semi scratch builds. The Byron would be a nice 5th and my first composite.

What are you using to power your Ziroli and your Don Smith?
What about langing gear? The 1/4 scale bird is about 110" isn't it?
