I took the wings out of the shucks, trimed back the balsa to the foam and sanded it smooth. Next I will add the balsa leading and trailing edges.

Managed to glue on the leading and trailing edge balsa on to the wings. Tomorrow if time permits, I will shape them, and clean the wing up.

No maiden as of yet, will be some time before that
I will make fake lights for the wingtips at a later date. However the next couple of steps has me install the wing tips. I have sanded them down, gave them a good wash. I marked the location as to where the lenses will go, and made some balsa pieces to form the backing of the wing tip lights. I will epoxy these into location, before I attach the wingtips. This will give me a good hard surface to work against when I get to that stage.

Craig.

mate a high intensity LED works atreat as a nav light, they are really easy to use, draw bugger al lcurrent and really look the goods on a warbird as does a functional landing light.

Consider this. You come off the downwind leg, gear down, half flaps, turn on to base while lowering full flaps then as you turn on to fianls with everything down and dirty you can see that landing light shining. Quite a few of the guys here have their warbirds down up like that and they look sensational, the crowd really likes it too.

Anyway just my biased viewpoint!

I think a landing light would be a great feature, just not to sure where it is located on the corsair. I will have to look at my books. I have glued in the support pieces for the wingtip lights.

cheers

THe landing light is retracted into the left wing. It extends out then turns on. look closely you'll see it.

Thanks for all the pictures and information.
I cleaned the leading edge up and it is roughly shaped. I needed to do this prior to getting the wingtips ready to install. I cut out the wing caps, shaped them and epoxied then to the end of the wing. I also inserted and epoxied the spar extension into location. When this is dry and cured, I will attach the glass, wingtip. Then the leading edge and trailing edge will be sanded to match.

I have the wing tips dry fitted. Fairly snug............just not sure which epoxy to use to glue them on. Either 30 min, or should I go with the polyester resin, that I used for the bracing in the fuselage.
After they are attached I will sand the leading and trailing edge to shape.

Remember that polyester resin will melt the foam!!

It has been so darn cold here, -32 and -46, with the wind, have not done much lately. Since my last post I have attached the wing tips, and have installed the dowels in the root of the wing. The wings do not line up as nice as I would have wanted, so I will need to do a bit of work to make it acceptable
I glued in the forward dowel plywood and glassed it in tonight. I did not like the position for the forward dowel hole so I moved it back. Inserted the wing, and when I was happy, I glued it into position. I just wanted to make sure that the alignment was good. I will do the rear pin after the flaps are cut out, then I will make the wing fit better with some sanding, and filling.

Craig.

Craig,

Is there any check of wing incidence at this point??

I know the wings need to line up with the fiberglass wing root but you said it isn't as good as you would like. Are you talking about the seam gap if any or the matching of the sheeting to the wing root?

Pete

PS stay warm

I find that the plywood on the root end of the wing is not a good fit. Need to add some balsa on the bottom to bring it flush with the ply. Not a huge issue, just a bit more work. I was expecting a perfect fit, but this usualy is never the case. The leading edge matches real good and the trailing edge is slightly above the fibreglass part. This will be fixed when the flaps are done.

Craig.

Started cutting out the control surfaces on the wing. Starting with the ailerons. I drew them out on both top and botom of the wing. With a small saw blade, I cut the balsa on both top and bottom as well as the trailing edge. Then I used a small foam cutter, followed the balsa cuts, and voila.
