Still plugging away on the trailing edge plywood. Took a while to complete the sanding, now I just need to make sure everything lines up well. I may have to sand a bit of the ailerons for a nice tight fit. Putting the ailerons in after the plywood is in location should prove interesting.

excellent work mate, I had to do a little sanding on my elevators on the Sea Fury to ensure smooth rotation. By the way I like your sanding tool. Very good. I just use a straight edge taped in place then use my permagrit tool to knock it back. Once I have a little depth the straight edge is not needed.

The permagrit gets doen to the depth very quickly.

Well back to the Sea Fury.

I wanted to make a wing bracket, to hold the wings on in the folded position. This will give me more room to work as I progress with the build, and it also looks cool I made a female end that the wing slides into, and in turn this slides into the fuselage. Turned out pretty good, just need to glass it for strength.

do I detect the possibility of a wing fold mechanisim being contemplated?

A wing folding mechanism would be nice, just dont have the will to do that. Maybe another build
Trailing edge plywood is glued into location on the wings. Need to work on the flap hinging, aileron servo pocket, and the linkage for the aileron. Decided to put the gear in, slide on the tail and cowl, just to see how she looks. I am getting excited about this plane.

Hi Craig,
Here are the pics of my wing setup. I have the same pin at the front, as per instructions. At the trailing edge of the outer wing, I have a ply tab with a 6/32 blind nut in it. I then have a reinforced hole at the same point in the inner wing . The allen screw goes through the wing and holds it tight. Also preventing the wing slipping out if the main bracket screw gets loose. I have uploaded pictures of one other thing that I added myself. The switch / filler hatch. It is in the position of the full scale fuel tank and follows its panel line. Lots of room and easy to fill air fuel and flip the switches.
good luck
Paul

Great pictures that you posted. I was thinking of the tounge method as well, looks very simple. Did you have any issues with the slitter plate to the outer flap? That looks as if it would be a much simpler set up than what the plans call for. I have been toying with the idea of making my aileron linkage hidden. Did you hide your linkage of go with the method stated in the plans?

Craig

Spent the remainder of the evening installing the flaps to the outer wing panel. Hinges are in and the final adjustment will be done after glassing and primer. I need to build up some parts of the edges of the flaps to ensure an even edge all around. I still need to make a decision on my aileron linkage set up....................I will think about this for a bit.

Canuck1,

I tried to emulate a scale actuator set-up on my Byron Corsair (aileron pushrod was hooked to 1/2 a hinge point in the top of the leading edge of the aileron, like the real bird). Set-up provided no stability around neutral. First flight with that system cause severe flutter in the outer wing panels. She looked like a bird. Modified after the first flight to have horns on the outside of the ailerons. This stopped the flutter problem in it's tracks. I have a friend who tried the carbon fiber rod slipping mechanism on a Top Flite GS Corsair, and he didn't like that system. It didn't provide enough throw.

I have a second IB Corsair in the beginning stages of construction, and plan to give the counterbalanced aileron system a harder look. Also, I set up the flaps the way the plans call for, and had no trouble. They work wonderfully, and make this one of the easiest Corsairs to land!

Great job on the build, and I can't wait to see the finished process.

hey Craig.
I took a few pics of my aileron setup. I also did a little diagram of the setup from the side view. Not too pretty but it gives you an idea. The horn is made by shaping the aileron inner end cap. then I use a hitec 5955TG 300 ounce titanium gear servo. I use hd ball links on each end to reduce slop. It is very positive right now and flies solid. the servo is mounted on the bottom of the servo box. getting the right geometry was the hardest part. I might go for the counter balance if I was you as I have them on the Byron hellcat that I have 1/2 finished. Anyway. If you decide to give it a try here you go.
good luck
Paul

Great idea, never even thought about that method. It looks like a pretty good setup. I will probably use the counter balance. After all the reading I have been doing, it is the safest bet. Thanks for posting those pictures, makes it a lot easier to invision

Went down to the basement to check out your idea for the ailerons
Taped a small dowel the the edge, moved the aileron back and forth....................seems like it will work pretty good. The attachment point looks as if it is exactly on the hinge line, for perfect rotation. The angle of push pull looks as if it is determined by the servo location. I am happy with the way this will work, and it will keep the linkage hidden. I will have to cut into the sheeting and epoxy the anchor point against the plywood end cap, very doable. This will give me something to think about over the next couple of days.

Flaps are now working very smooth to the 40 degree angle. Had to sand a bit of the slitter plate to smooth out the operation. They move up and down very nice
Next is the aileron and linkage, and flaps for the wing.

Hey guys!
I've been preocupied with a new job and all and haven't spent much time on my buddies Corsair since my last post. Tonight I spent some time on one of the ailerons and glued a root rib to the right wing panel.
I am curious as to all of the 'talk' I am 'reading' LOL about counter balancing the ailerons. Seems to me that there is very little meat in which to add the balance lead. Can anyone please let me know how you are balancing these ailerons. I understand the idea of control surfaces with balance tabs and have also seen balance rods that extend below and forward of the control surface but not on a L.E. that is so short.

Thanks so much!
Les

ps. looking VERY nice Craig. 2 thumbs up.

Craig,
I had to post again since you posted again while I was typing my last post! I see that you went with the ball link method for your outboard flaps. Any input on the possibility of using another slitter plate for the outboard flap like on the inboard ones instead of the dual ball link method? The guy I am finishing this one for was kind of leaning toward getting away from the dual ball link method.

Thanks,

Les

you are right...............there is not very much meat to attach the threaded rod with the weight. I will leave the counter balance off for now as it is not required until final assembly.
I was asking tha same question regarding another slither plate. That may be another option. In the pictures that Paul posted, he has used another slitter plate, for the wing flap.
Decisions, decisions

I must admit that I am not real familiar with the full scale Corsair, but I was assuming that people were talking about putting the weights in the L.E. of the aileron. Does the full scale counterpart have counterbalance rods forward of the ailerons? Reason I'm asking is because I am not seeing them on any pics.

Thanks,
Les

I have no idea reference the counter balance rods. Most guys on here suggest using them. Would hate to lose and airplane due to not having a counter balance.

Well, flaps are pretty much done. I promise that this will be the last pictures of the flaps

Craig,

Post as many as you like it's your thread, you worked hard on them and it shows.

Great build.

Not sure you really need to counterbalance the ailewrons. I would do the elevators.

Something a little different to post. I made the flap servo brackets and have glued them into the wing. I am also working on some small stuff, that I have not done yet to include the two access hatches on the bottom of the fuselage.

Servo's fit into the mounts Also have the two bottom access hatches attached with 6 small screws. These will be replaced with some button head screws at a later date.

Worked on the aileron locations on the wing. I marked the location of the servo using the plywood provided. I cut out the balsa wood, and began melting out the foam from the center being carefull to leave an edge for the plywood servo mount. Epoxied the plywood into location, held with T pins. When it is dry I will melt out the centre for the servo to fit. I also may line the inside of the bay with some balsa just to clean up the opening.
