Is this the "Square" engine Bob talked about?

Yes, it is more of a square stroke. The term long stroke comes due to the fact that it is longer, than what it was.

I guess so much for the "Slow down." Ya think Dub would have spent all the time and effort to bring out this new engine, just to trash can it in a few months?

Mr. Jett, and Mr. Nelson THANK YOU!! Racing is about who can go faster, or fastest.
As it should be.

Dave,

Yup! Its available now as Dub and Mike was running it on Friday for practices before race day. The two engines was brand new and they both just starting to run them in (break-in) before the race. Dub was extremely busy building for others and just finished his own a week before race weekend. The engine was competitive, but I think it can do better if given more run time. It unloaded pretty darn good with the 8.8x9.25 from what I can tell. I talked to Dub more about it at the race and was told it turned a 8.75x9w over 20K. Just for comparison, the previous generation motor that Fred B. set a record of 103.** something many years ago turned a 8.75x9w at 19,600. This one is indeed more powerful and I had a hard time keeping up with Mike and Dub with my new Profi. My new Profi is no slouch as it turned a 8.75x9w at 19,600 after many flights testing and fine tuning, setting up head clearance to match this prop. Unfortunately, my Profi ate the dirt with bad air coming around pylon 3 battling for second place option while chasing first place guy. I think it was Dub that we were chasing, but not sure. The other gentlemen also went down too as I smack the ground before he did his.

The new Jett LS seem to pull the big prop very hard coming around the poles. I guess with new improved engines and speed, I have no other choice, but to sell my previous generation engines and get Dub's new Jett LS series. I have 4 BSE Jett Q500 engines and thinking about selling these, but not sure what price to sell them at yet. One of the engine I ran on Thursday in practice turned a 8.75x9.25NN at 19,600, but was not competitive in the air so I didn't used it. What do you think a good price should be for a slightly used engines?

Sam

Quickie and Q40 motors tend to go for $175 - $200, but alot of motors have sold on the auction site the last year, not sure if you'll be able to get that much. I'd try to find a local just starting 428 and try to get someone interested in the $150 range.

I used the Jett cast case in Euro spec Q500 last year and I have been very pleased with that engine, not quite on the pace of the 15% nitro fuelled US models but as fast as anything over this side of the pond.

So I am really pleased that Dub has announced this new engine and I have ordered one to try, I will keep the cast case engine as it will be good for airframe testing etc

Bazzer,

I will go the opposite of what I'm use to now, which is a BSE version. This time, I will go with cast case for no other reasons than the stiffer case of the two. I don't know what the ports looks like on the cast case Q-500 engines compare to the BSE case, but the Jett Q40's engines are more powerful with the cast case version. Maybe this have to do with stiffer case = less distortion/vibration from high RPM's? I don't know. But I'll take my chances and run the cast case version for next few years and see what happen.

Great. Finally a new Jett engine that once again can fight and beat the Nelsson. Last season where though when the new Nelsson LS did do very well in the race here in Sweden. I have sold all my old Jett stuff and will be back for this season with new Jett LS and fight for the top score. My ould Jett was realy a great engine. 2006 i placed no 1 with it in the winter race on the ice on a frozen lake in minus 20 degrees. It was a bit tricky to start (as the pilot). Since than i have been using it in many competitions here in Sweden. Except for a new piston and liner last year its been original. We use Nitro fuel with no castor oil nowedays, and are very pleased with that change.

Sam,

I just spoke with Dub yesterday as I ordered my new QJ2--yea! He said the BSE is definitely the way to go for the QJ motor. It is superior to the cast case motor.

Also, look for more improvements in the Q40 motors ;-)

Dub took his time on this one..... and it is paying off. The Q-500 engine was an aggresive project, and a bit more challenging than the QM-2 engine.

The QJ-2 and QM-2 engines will indeed make their mark in due time.

Don't expect the bar to be raised .... just a good deal of fun competition.

Worth noting.... building and selling racing engines tends to be a losing business proposition. So the motivation to build the engines has to come from inside.

Bob

John,

That's nice to know, but I will try the cast case version first before going back with the BSE. I know BSE version works, but I want to experiment with the cast case and compare them two with my own personal experience. I want to know what's the difference and why the cast version is more powerful than BSE with Q40 motor. Maybe the same apply to Q500 motor when one get the set up right? I don't know.

Talking about set up. I find that the previous generation quickie Jett was a little more finicky than Nelson because the head clearance set up are really low compare to most Nelson engines. All my Jett engine came from Dub with .008-.009 head clearance for optimum power and performance on good weather, but finicky on so so weather. After many frustration with consistant engine perfromance, I decided to experiment and set them up at .010 and later at .012 head clearance. It works great with .010 head clearance at first, but nasty weather still have some issue with it being overly compressed. I tried .012 head clearance and it made a big difference in how the engine runs and perform in all weather condition. It allow me to run big and small props without any issue and is very consistant all around. I really like that and I'm going to run all my engines with .012 head clearance from now on. I will only run .008 to .010 head clearance in HOT weather and higher altitude like your location with 5000 feet above sea level if I have to, but not under normal condition. Just a thought that I would like to share with you and others!

Thanks for the info too, Bob!

I told Dub I was waiting for him to counter Henry's new LS that's why I didn't order any new engine yet. Now that he did, I hope he raised the bar a little higher than and not the same or equal to. Will see how that goes...
