Status: offline 		I am getting back into finishing up the P-38 . I had to walk away from it for a bit after a little set back . I did the final instal of all servoes , control rods and horns , then came the retracts . All worked just great , doors open and close perfect ,,, but the brass fittings on the cylinders for the retracts leak and i just cannot trust them the way they are . So i decided to send them out to Down and Locked and  set them up for electric.

While i am waiting for them to come back i plan on painting , but first i want to put aluminum on all the leading edges so i can weather them after the paint is dry.

Its been a while since I've shown what work I've done...but I'm getting close now to finishing the model. I'm now painting my turbo-charger covers and after this, I'll need to paint on the anti-glare flat black on the inboard sides of the nacelles, to finish. I did install a Sullivan on-board glow and sent out my retracts to Springair for new springs and o-rings. Enclosed are a few pictures to show my work.

Tonight I'm going to remount the engines in both nacelles, and set up the painting for the anti-glare black quarter panel. After I paint this...the model will be reassembled for flight... : ) Its getting closer.

I finisned my P-38, assembled it and checked out the systems. I need to replace my on-board glow battery and I now have a replacement inbound. I still need to dial a few things in, but its close and the retracts work like a charm. I sent them back to Spring Air...and the good folks there checked out my landing gear, installing new O-rings and springs (and Spring Air paid for return shipping-refusing to take my money-thats customer service!). It was a neat project to dive into...and I'm really looking forward to the first flights.

Ok...I have my new on-board glow battery in hand...and that unit is charging as I type this out. I want to thank all you good folks for your advice and input. Its now time to run the engines and get them dialed in...then time to put her in the air.

By the way...I've three oil cooler covers if anyone needs them, from my kit, that I didn't use. Just let me know...and I'll mail them out pronto.

I gave them the bench test and are flawless . Nice movment and lock in both positions .
Mitch and Ron don't leave ya short they included the control box , leed for the rx and full instructions . Great job guys.

As soon as the weather turns better i can start painting this bird.

Its me Bob, from Maui...well I managed to find a VQ P-38 ARF unbuilt kit here on Maui. I bought if from a guy named Terry, and when I got home and opened up the kit...there were two right engine nacelles...and no left... : ) Do any of you folks know of a left VQ P-38 engine nacelle for sale or trade.

I've bugged Terry for years to get this kit from him...and always just went nuts when I saw the quality of the kit. Its light, complete and awesome...but UGG...no left fuse. The ARF kit was a little rough, being that it sat opened in his garage for seven years. No big problems...just some hanger rash, but fixable and flyable if I can get a left engine fuse. The model will need some needed care, but it is all there...almost.

I e-mailed Thomas of VQ models, and e-mailed the factory in Viet Nam for help. But so far, no answers. Can any one direct me to where I can get the part I need...?

I'm still working out the bugs in my engines...and I may need to change out my left engine to my N.P. P-38. The mid range sucks on the left engine and I'm going to go at it a few more times...then if no better, change it out. Other then this, she is ready to fly.

Status: offline 		Finally got off my duff and got some painting done .

 

First i got all the interiors and hatch doors painted with Zinc Chromate primer. this went very well and looks great.

 

Moved onto covering her exterior with grey primer.

First i put one thin coat on all components then sanded everything down with 600 grit.

Now all the imperfections show up that i didn't see earlier. Simply apply filler in the areas needed and sanded them out .

Then put a second thin coat of primer on . Now IMO she looks very smooth.

The LS coating i put on her really covered well . and saved allot of time and i will use this again.

 

I am very satisfied at this point now i can apply the panel lines and other details . Also i need to detail the turbo hatches .

This P-38 will fly this summer .

 

I hope everything works out for you Bob . I am still looking for a new canopy for this P-38 and still no luck.

Status: offline 		I took advantage of the gloomy day today and took the P-38 outside to do more sanding . At first i thought i was ready to apply the pannel lines but not quite yet.
I am still pondering on leaving the stringers showing on the pod and boom front tops.

While i was sanding the second coat of primer i was thinking maybe i should have put some silver pigment in the LS . i think this would have kept the wieght down a little and gave the same effect as applying aluminum under the primer. Some thing to think about next time .

I still need to fill a few spots then i will start the pannel lines . I have on hand 1/32" chart tape . I have never used this method before but this entire build is a on going experiance for me .

Status: offline 		A little update on the progress.
Today i got the panel lines layed out and applied . I am useing 1/64" chart tape to create them . The pics below don't realy show them very well but they are there . After laying out the the tape i applied 3 thin coats of primer and two coats of olive drab . I will let this set up over night then pull the tape off and apply one more coat of drab then one coat of clear . And of course wet sanding with 600 grit between each coat.. Also i decided to hide the framework lines on the pod with a few coats of filler.
I am planning on getting her as close to completion as i can this week because i have the week off.
Also for the scoops on the booms , it was a bit of a challenge to hide the plastic edges but i think i have it well in hand .
Next is to put the panel lines on the booms and pod i should have this completed tomorrow.

Hi Duayne.

As far as i know i am the only one in this thread to use electric motor system .
Thank you for the comment this mod has been very educational for me and fun.
