ORIGINAL: Glacier Girl I see in the last photo you've switched to the Fred Flinstone landing gear. That's one tough pilot you got there. Oh something else on the o/d with stripes. I found this little tid bit in my searches. "Late model Lightnings were delivered unpainted, as per USAAF policy established in 1944. At first, field units tried to paint them, since pilots worried about being too visible to the enemy, but it turned out the reduction in weight was a minor plus in combat." Might be why there are so few pics of a painted Lightning with stripes. Good one on the gear. I'm disparate, I told the pilot I'm having trouble getting this nose gear, and he said, well what about something like this? I said, no way, it will surely fold on landing . Yes, I found the same info. There were some early Js still delivered in green, but very early in there production they were switched to natural as you also found, with a few being painted in the field. I may well be looking for a needle in a hay stack. I don't think this Lighting will look as good in metal with built up open bays in the wings and tail. If I do one in metal, I'll sheet these areas, and still have a lighter 90" than anything else out there. I think I will stay with the plan for this one and make it generic if I have to. Hope it doesn't come to this.
