Josh, I just wanted to double check with you on the spinner and adapters required for the RCV 90. I will need the following?
Tru Turn
spinner TTH-1250-B
Adapter TT-0522-A
Adapter TT-0523-AB

Ok never mind i just double checked your Youtube video and noticed the ext bolt. I was just running through the check lists of things i need while waiting for the hubs to be delivered.

Juice -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/3/2008 3:53:45 AM)

Grinder... You got it right, the extension bolt replaces the the adapters. The only other things you will need are the 12 SHCS and the props.

The hubs should be arriving tommorow. I'll take a picture while I inspect all the hubs.

Josh

Josh,
just a little trivial correction to your verbage LOL .

what you buy from Solo Prop we in the full scale world refer to as Propeller blades,

BTW I am very impressed, that is a really neat setup!

To everyone who ordered a hub...

While preparing the shipping labels I found out that in addition to the shipping address I also need your phone number. Can you all please reply back with your phone number via Private Message. Do not post your phone number on this public message thread (where EVERYONE can see). Please do it in a Private Message.

I'll get back to each one of you very soon with your balance due (with actual shipping charges).

BTW... No hubs yet. They should be arriving today. I plan to individually inspect and package them over the weekend. Hopefully I can get them shipped out early next week.

Thanks,
Josh

Juice -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/4/2008 2:05:07 AM)

I had to act calm and cool while picking up the package from the condo security guard. [8D] What I really felt was like an overly excited child on Christmas morning dying to tear into the big present. [:D]

Anyways... Here they are, fresh from the paper packaging they were wrapped in and neatly placed back in the "nest" for the picture. Don't they look cool all shiney and new? The slightly dirty one on the bottom is my prototype.

I still haven't inspected them yet. I'll do a thorough quality control check on them tonight.

Josh

Hello Josh, My Name is Bruce.I read through this forum today and am
truly impressed!I'm into warbirds altho not corsairs.I thougt I would
update you on Paradice,Ca.,I live 40 miles NW of there.Last week
there were more fires there and all around me about 200 or so from
lightening strikes most are contained nowTG.Also to tell you for future
I have a friend w/CNC shop here in Red Biuff, Ca. He builds hubs for
ultralites if you need more in the future I am sure he would be interested
in helpping out,he's RC'ER Too. Shop name is Light Machine MFG. I have

Dem dar hubs look real purty. Can't wait to git mines.

Juice -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/5/2008 6:17:05 AM)

I inspected the hubs and they are all good. The fit problems I had with the prototype have been fixed in the production run. Thank goodness.

Next...

I recently found a place where I can get free boxes suitable for shipping. With the actual box dimensions and weight, I can get the actual shipping costs. Also, a few weeks ago after receiving your deposits, PayPal started charging me 2.9%+$0.30 of the transaction amount to receive the money. That sucks. If I was making a profit from this project I would just eat that cost. I really hate to increase the costs of an already expensive hub, but I have to add this to the bill. I hope you understand.

To all that have ordered a hub... I sent you PayPal Money Request (if I have your e-mail address) or a Private Message (if I don't have your e-mail address).

If you ordered a hub and didn't get a PayPal Money Request or Private Message yet... my apologies. Just send me a Private Message and we'll get everything straightened out.

If you haven't ordered a hub and want one... I have a few left over. Send me a PM.

Any questions, errors, or concerns... please let me know.

Thanks,
Josh

Juice -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/10/2008 6:28:23 PM)

Update...

I had the first two packages ready to ship (pic #1). As I was double checking the fit of the third, I noticed something. In fear of putting scratches on a the shiney new aluminum hubs, I didn't screw in any of the 12 bolts really tight. This time I did and noticed that the tapped holes in the rear hub half are not deep enough. They are too shallow by about 1/32".

The fix is easy... it just requires 2 turns of a 6-32 tap bit. The problem is that I have to do it over 150 times. [:o] No problem actually.

I'll try to get as many as possible fixed and shipped by friday afternoon. I'm very VERY sorry, but the rest will have to be fixed and shipped next week. This weekend I'm driving down to an airshow in Geneseo, NY. They have a "mini-gathering of P-40's" among other warbirds. I can't miss that.

Also, I'm still waiting for payments for a few more people. If you haven't paid yet, please check your PM and you e-mail.

Josh

Better to get all the bugs worked before you ship the hubs than have a bunch of ppl complaining to you. Ya I know the waiting is tedious but in the end a few days worth of waiting will be worth it at the field.

Got my hub today from UPS. Thanks Juice. Just had a chance for quick once over. Package comes with full instructions and pics. Very helpful. The added Hamilton Sundstrand decals was a nice touch. Just follow the instructions to the letter and you will be fine setting your hub and blades to the correct pitch. Now i just have to get the Corsair done.

Juice -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/17/2008 4:32:10 AM)

Yeah, Geneseo was a good show. It was a bonus to see Marine's Dream there. Here are couple of my favourite video clips I took while there (standing at the right place at the right time)...

Time for an update...

On average, I'm able to fix (see post #211), pack and ship one hub per day. Fixing is easy, it just take a bit of time to tap the twelve holes per hub. So far, five have been fixed and shipped (Grinder has already received his). The sixth is ready to drop off at the UPS store tommorow. I'm going in the same order that I received full payments.

I tried to be thorough while writing the enclosed instructions. But if I missed anything, or if you guys have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me here on this thread or in a PM.

Enjoy,
Josh

Juice -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/19/2008 4:55:48 PM)

For everyone who has paid... your hub has been fixed and shipped. Check your e-mail for a UPS tracking number.

My part in the project is practically done. It took 6 months for this project to go from a thought in my head to a physical product shipped to people around the world. I can hardly believe I pulled it off. [:D] I learned a lot about more things than I thought I would, and I enjoyed every bit of it. Now I can relax a bit and enjoy the rest of the summer.

It's up to you guys now. Make sure you post pictures and video. Reviews, thoughts and comments (good or bad) are encouraged. Of course, if anyone has ANY questions, just ask me here. I hope you enjoy your hubs.

Sincerely,
Josh

Juice -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/19/2008 5:06:09 PM)

Actually there more to say [:D]... For various reasons, some people who originally ordered a hub had to back out.

At this moment, I have an additional 4 hubs up for sale. Anyone else interested?

(Maybe someday I'll build a big B-17 with 4 RCV-120SP!)

Joe Lott -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/19/2008 5:32:00 PM)

Josh,

Thanks so much for your hard work and perserverance. You've done us .60 size builders a great service. Just a few months ago this idea wasn't even thought to be feasible, much less available to the public. I'm glad I found the thread when you started it. It's been a real treat to read and watch from the beginning! I agonized over going for it, but when I saw that big beauty spinning on your test stand I knew I had to have one. The way I see it, I'm already putting much cash into this build so why not go that one extra step to really make it a BEAUTIFUL flyer. I don't think you will have much trouble getting takers for the 4 remaining hubs on hand. Just let folks know they're available.[:)]

I'm at the "panel lines" stage of my TF Corsair build, so I have some work to finish before I'm ready to maiden. I'll post some pics when I'm finished. My hub and blades are stuck in Doraville, GA for the weekend. Maybe I'll get them by Monday. (Can't wait to get my hands on this beauty!)

Once again, thank you,
Joe

saramos -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/19/2008 6:10:51 PM)

Josh,

Great work! I can't wait 'till mine arrives. Unfortunately, I have a couple of projects that are in line before my 1/8 scale Royal project. I'm working on a 1/6 Corsair now, and then have an electric 1/7 scale P-51b to get back to. Then, I'll be ready to get the 1/8 Corsair going, and have a wonderful hub waiting.

Now all you have to do is to make a 1/6 scale hub to replace that clunker that Soloprops sells! I may go electric with it so I can turn a scale 26" 3 blade.[8D]

Josh,
I just came across this thread and read every post. You are to be commended for seeing this through to completion. I'm wondering, and it's something you probably already considered, but can this hub be manufactured as a fixed-pitch? I mean, there are no real variables since they are made only for the RCV engines, and the 1/8 scale models that will use them are pretty much similar in weight and size. Once the best pitch is known for either a .90 or the .120, then there should be no real reason to have to change the pitch thereafter. I'm just thinking that some parts could be eliminated from the equation and maybe make the concept less expensive? At the moment, I'm considering taking one off of your hands, since my H9 corsair is next on my assembly table. I already have a O.S. .90 4 stroke for it, but would consider the .120 RCV. I have the LADO retracts already and I'm stripping the covering to do a WWII scheme. I'll let you know if I decide to purchase a hub. REALLY awesome job you accomplished. Maybe SOLO will eventually consider making this in large quantities. Thanks,

Jesse

tahustvedt -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/20/2008 11:27:06 PM)

Jesse.

Here's what I did to save weight with my Soloprop hub after I had found a good blade pitch. I used a thin white marker and while the prop was assembled and adjusted I marked on the blade on each sode where the hub was split. then I took it apart and removed the heavy pitch adjustment mechanism and assembled it again wiith the white marks aligned.

whstlngdeath -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/21/2008 12:41:54 AM)

tahustvedt,

That's great. So the SOLOprop will work without the adjuster installed? What type of airplane are you using it on? Thanks for the tip.

Jesse

Juice -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/21/2008 9:01:54 PM)

tahustvedt... That's a good idea. It'd be a little concerned about the pitch of each propeller blades not being syncronized. But if you are careful and cautious enough I guess it could be done.

Jesse... The Soloprop actuator (the adjuster) weighs 1 oz. The actuator in my 1/8 scale hub only weighs 1/4 oz. It's up to you to balance the benefits and the risks. For me personally, I would consider doing it on the Soloprop hub (very, very cautiously), but I wouldn't risk it on my 1/8 scale hub to save 1/4 oz.

Josh

Juice -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/21/2008 9:23:18 PM)

Flight report...

I got in flights #2 and #3 with the hub last weekend. Sorry, no pictures or video this time. The main detail I want to share is that I set the pitch to 10" (using 16" blades).

10" pitch is isn't enough pitch in my opinion. It had good performance on take-off and landing, but it didn't give enough foward speed for me. Don't get me wrong, there was more than enough speed to fly the H9 Corsair and it never stalled or show sighs of stalling. It was just a little slow at full throttle.

Other than that it was pretty much uneventful. Oh yeah, these were my first flight with the new LADO electric retracts. It looks so nice when the wheel go up really slow. [:D]

Josh

whstlngdeath -> RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines. (7/22/2008 2:02:25 AM)

Josh,

My thoughts about eliminating the adjustability wasn't a concern about weight, but cost savings. Maybe remove the feature with its various pieces, and the price would go down some.

Jesse
