I probably should have only tested one thing at a time, rather than both the stab and the airfoiled fuse.

I'm going to verify my incidences one more time, and test shimming in a little downthrust and if that doesn't help, I'll try shimming the wing.

I'll need the fuse and wing and some of the paint color used on the fuse. I can saw the fuse off before that silly bend and make a great HAULER I have the booms built already Just don't damage it. Just need a set of stabs from a Pred or Viper

Albert, you are quite the comedian.

This thing will be racing once I get some of the quirkiness out of it. Just needs another tweak or two and it will be all set.

The lifting fuse idea, doesn't seam to be lifting. In knife, with an TT .40 it falls out of knife just like every other Q500 plane. At least I don't notice any, I am going to move the CG back again. My first thoughts of it being tail heavy, may have just been the heavy winds and its characteristics on its test flight.

Does anyone know the optimal CG for a Viper wing?? I think its 2 3/4 - 2 7/8, but I want to move it back around 3 - 3 1/8" to see if that cures the drift...??

Not sure what beveredge it was the day I started gluing balsa, but I bet it was 100+ proof

The single biggest issue I see with the "lifting fuse" thinking is the leading edge of the "airfoil" is screwed up because of the engine being there. Try messing up the leading edge of a wing like that and see how it flies. You're also trying to get the fuse to act like a flying wing, and the airfoil is incorrect for a flying wing, which tend to have a lot of up reflex in the trailing edge. Ok, I guess that's two issues.

The pitching moment of the fuselage airfoil would tend to make the airplane fly nose down. Plus the aspect ratio of an airfoiled fuselage is remarkably poor. But it has had great entertainment value.

Added a small amount of down thrust and moved the CG back slightly and she's good to go. Drifting issue is gone. Flies as good as anything else I own. With the CG back, the whale will fly a perfect knife edge without dropping altitude, even with the slower TT .40 I have on it. Looks incredibly odd flying through the air though.

I would have no issues racing this plane in our NCPL O.S. .46 class, in fact I think it will be my backup for the year.

Now I need to get some radar readings and see how bad some of the mixes I have are hurting my speed coming out of the turns are compared to my seekers.

Put an OS .46 AX on the nose and will see how that changes things this afternoon.

I got a request for moment dimensions so here they are for all aspiring whale builders.

Well we finally got a NCPL race The weather was GREAT There was a slight dowwind takeoff problem but I don't believe it caused much off a problem When it was all over Jerry B took first and Daven took second in a flyoff with Pat G Way to Go
No Whale's were sighted I don't know what the problem was. But none were seen There were a couple of Haulers and of course the "Everybody has one" V tailed aircraft, They all look alike so I couldn't tell you what they were.

Whale made its racing debut yesterday, and finished a very respectable 4th, after cutting out in its last heat. A win in that heat would have put AJ in a tie for 1st place, but his caller didn't get him all the way down to one.

There is no doubt the whale was as fast as any plane there, and never lost a heat to a R200. There are several mixes going on, but I think we have it nailed down, and for OS .46 races, this thing is competitive and flies very good.

Dave, I fly my vipers at 3 1/8. This has been very succesful in our Q25 racing. I do run about 50% expo too.

Thats primarily because I tweaked it the wrong way after its test flight, and AJ had an exciting heat where it wanted to climb every time he rolled the plane left. We had it nailed by heat 3, around the time you and Chuck had your little incident. The only issue with the plane was it is a little screwy on takeoff, especially with that strong crosswind we had. Couldn't decide which way it wanted to go, a bigger (taller) rudder would probably be helpfull.

Yep, the Y-Knot was a little worse off than previously suspected but still not too bad for it's first "kill".. A new wing and some CA and it will be going again..
