I have a big glow engine and what i have done is machine a cylinder head with 3 glow plugs. Has anyone done this? pros/cons.
The engine runs great. no loading up runs on any fuel and very relible. It made that sloppy midrange run like it has an after burner. Im running a 20 x 8 prop

Interesting. I an aware of several engines that have been manufactured in the past with dual plugs but nine with three.

What kind of engine is it?

Thats why I like the OS-F glow plug so much for any twostroke engine bigger than a 91. The plug clears the midrange and makes it easy to set the needles rich for a nice thick smoke trail Maybe 2 or 3 glow plugs have effects in the same direction as one really hot glow plug or maybe even better? Have you gained any top rpm compared to a single plug operation?

I have seen many Giant scale air racing glow engines where they had more than two glowplugs. But these were some pretty big glow engines. 200 CC quadra's all the way up to 280CC modded Herbransons. Were taling about 40 HP with these.

Why not tell us the engine make, size of engine, fuel used and top rpm plus idle speed.

Its hard to check rpm because my tach is a glow bee (junk) dart board would work better. as for the fuel i used 0-10 nitro wild cat. I have tried all kinds of plugs but this set up work great. It seem all engines from 1.2 or bigger would be so easy to break in and no flame out.

I think there is a point of diminishing returns to adding plugs but more than one seems to be an improvement.

A GloBee will read just fine.

I am still curious as to make and size of the engine, I have a dual plug Fox and a couple of dual plug Mercos, but could never tell any improvement over the single plug variants. They looked neat though.

That means you are using low nitro fuel and the plug is hotter than it needs to be. When you have the right plug or nitro then the smoke trail will only be thick when accelerating. However, the needles will be harder to set, but you will have more power and or use less fuel.

Having more than one plug increases the timing much as having a hotter plug, some will use a cool and a hot plug but I am not sure of the mechanics of that. Of course it helps with reliablility as it will still run when one plug burns out. They were used on older engines when extra hot plugs were not available, and the ones they did have tend to burn out quicker than today.

210 mark.

My globee tach read 12500 with a 20 x 8 I dont believe it . I need a better tach.
I just added the extra plugs to get rid of the sputter and not have a flame out in

Gemini,

That would have been over 16 HP....The Moki 2.10 (that's its real name) is a very capable engine, but 3.2-3.5 HP is about what you should get, around 9,000 RPM.

Having several plugs would allow the one that has the leanest mixture in its vicinity to ignite it in every revolution... Less missing is the result, but flame propagation will not be uniform.

I am not sure what that would cause...

I use a OS H-80 that has dual plugs. Runs great and it has never dead sticked. I've tried using one hot and one cold plug but can't tell the difference. Light either one and the engine runs

It makes me feel better having twin glow plugs............smiles

My GloBee generally gives the same readings as my TNC though the TNC is less sensitive to light conditions and will read from further away. For that matter my antique vibra-tac gives about the sane readings too and needs no light at all
