Here's the update on my "giant scale" Yak-3. Last weekend we went and picked up the engine for it. We got the new engine mount finished and powdercoated. This Friday when my partner gets back from wiring a "giant scale" P-51C, we'll hang the engine on and start connecting up things.

WOW! Look good! Last few weeks i was flooded by work in the office - 6 days in there way over limit in hours, so didn't have much time to work on my yak. So far wing is almost done, must start adding panels soon. Will post pic's this coming week hopefully...

Well guys, I can't hold that for myself, have to brag about it! Friend of mine send me a little huge inspiration. Little because is little in size, huge, because is such a masterpiece that really inspire me to work more and harder on this project. Here it is Yak-3 in 1:50 scale static model. This guy make it from scratch, and have everything you would expect to find in a warbird. In fact that little gem have more details that can be seen in regular 40 or 60 sized birds on the field! She have instrumental panels with all instruments on place, pilot's seat, handle to control the airplane, pedals, even seat belts are in place! I'm not going even to mention all panel lines and rivets... On couple pictures she is on top of stabilizer of my yak for size comparison. Only thing is that my camera cant catch all details but here she is!

I guess now is impossible to get hands on VK-107A or something similar in working condition... Wish you luck with engine mounting. When will be the test of the engine?

Why would you want to? The VK-107A's were tempermental to begin with. I remember reading someplace that they were lucky to last 25 hours at LESS than full throttle. Heck thats almost worse than the Jumo 004's in the 262!
I know accuracy is important, but living more than 25 hours I think is even more important!
Wayne can probably fill us in more.
I just wish New England had someone that restored warbirds, I would easily give up a few decades to help out restoration on just about anything!

I'm not sure when we'll have it ready to run. We still have to fab all the cooling lines and such. The plan is to have the A/C flying by September. To my knowlage there are no airworthy VK-107 engines available. the Allison is a reasonable sustitute for it. The origional VK-107 engine longevity was probably rated in weeks not years.
Evil, I started out going to the Reno Air Races in 1972. Sitting in the stands, I always thought it would be fun to work on warbirds and be on a Race crew at Reno. In 1980, I met some guys who had a shop at the Oakland, Calif. airport and I volunteered to help out on the warbirds. The owner owned a F7F Tigercat and I had a Bridi F7F, so I took it up to show him. In 1985, I was invited on to an Unlimited Race crew for a modified P-51. I'm still crewing at Reno (sometimes 2 racers at once) and now I have a buisness of restoring warbirds. And this all started by sitting in the stands at Reno and dreaming. You should inquire at any local airshows for any locals who might need some help.

Wayne,
Oh believe me, I do. One of the advantages of the Civil Air Patrol is I'm always working the local airshows. Yeah, I'm in uniform, but none the less I do have good contacts with a lot of the Collings Foundation folks, as well as CAF folks, but most of them are based in the South. New England just isn't a happening place for the warbirds due to the weather and limited VFR availablity over the year.
