ScaleFreak -> A123 Brand Balance Taps (1/21/2008 6:20:17 AM)

I bought several 2s and 3s balance taps from A123. The 2s taps have a single (1) wire, complete with balance tap plug and solder tab at opposite end. The 3s taps are the same, but with two (2) wires. Doesn't a 2s need 3 wires (1 for each negative and 1 for positive) and 3s should have 4???? How can I use these taps? How does 1 wire balance 2 cells and how can 2 wires balance 3? I can make these work if I dismantle all of them and turn 20 taps into just a few??? I spent the money on the Sonic Charge so I could balance charge my 3s and 2s packs.

I'm trying to help answer my own problem......I'm assuming that the A123 taps layout means that the chargers output is automatically balancing the first cell in the pack. Is this the correct way to use the A123 taps?

Your drawing should be correct. That is the standard.

With a 3 lead 2S balancing lead the pack neg. and pack pos. share a balancing lead connection point. Some including A123 Racing passed on this and just ue the main leads and a center tap.

Power lead - / +- (seires connection) / power lead +

On the A123 Racing site under their Developers Kit there is a PDF file with balancing leads / taps drawing

Thanks a billion, Charles. That helps a lot! I wanted to make sure my thinking was correct before proceeding with the pack build. I have built some 5s packs already, but used polyquest taps and wired the packs to work with my Duralite stay balance and enerland balancers.

Again, Thanks!
