I know this has been asked, but this is for Q25 racing. Would the new Predator be good? I have not really seen much about it's weak points, if the nose is longer (tank area) I like the Predator's v-tail linkage. Don't know if they come out lighter (is the wing lighter?) Are the fuses weak? I've had Vipers, but would like to try something different, unless they are junk. Comments from those that have had/flown both are appreciated.

Hey Dwayne!
The Pred 2 has a stronger fuse (thicker in the rear) and a little larger tank area. It is also much easier to set up with no need to "Tweek" the incidence.
e-mail me and I will send you a link to another discussion in your local area.

Both have their plusses and minuses. Both are decent planes.

Better hurry, seems the Pred 2 is on it's way out.

I don't race but I had a Predator 2 and recently put a Viper together.I gave the Predator to a friend and got the Viper because I read it had a faster wing. The Predator 2 was much better qaulity. The Viper came with a warped fuse and being that some moron at Great Planes decided to design the tail of the fuse to be converted into a rudder it breaks off rather easy.Oh yeah and I had to shim the v-tail to avoid having to add a lot of up trim. There are a couple of threads on the Viper and having to shim the v-tail is a common problem.

I've got two Vipers (well, sort of) the last one flew good, I just found a weak spot behind the servo tray on a less than perfect landing! I don't want to bother glueing the two halves back together. I will order another fuse to replace it later. Till then, I'm going to buy one or the other. Sounds like a Predator this time. Kind of sucks, I spent too much time on this last one for it to break so soon. I glassed the nose and tail area, found out that mounting the throttle servo upside down in the tray makes for a straight shot to the carb with the pushrod. Found a better solution to the tank, and even re-covered it in yellow. I guess I should not have tried to fly in the high cross wind that day. It didn't seem that bad, it just dropped a wing as it touched down, no cart wheel even. I think it hit on the tail and wing tip at the same time, breaking the back half, don't see any marks on the v-tail where it hit. My red one is 5oz heavier and has been flipped over, cart wheeled, and had some hard landings and is still ok, uh, I probably just jinxed that plane too!

Duane, mine broke the same way. Not too bad of a job to just put the pieces back in with thin CA and glass over it. Mine flies fine again. If Skull doesn't get it I'll take it too and for sure the wing!

I followed your advice Skull and got a predator II in hurry before they sold out. I had one before and really like the build quality, I just hope it goes as fast as the viper.

It's all about being smooth on the sticks. If you climb 100ft on the way to #1, then dive 100ft on the way to #2, you just added that much more distance to your lap.

Ahh, if it was only that easy.

Depending on wind, sometimes the fast course is climbing and diving. Especially with higher winds and slower airplanes

See if supertrc.com still has the Venom fuse kits for sale. Better to build a good fuse for your Viper wing than replace with another weak Viper fuse!

I didn't see the Venom fuses listed. Is there another source for aftermarket fuses to Viper wings? I bought the Predator II today, I like a few things about it. Larger ailerons (great since it will be going slower) wheels and fuel tank seem better. I won't start on it for a while, unless the back up Viper "bites" it too! I've been burned out, being I just built the other Viper, built the Pinewood Derby cars for Scouts, and still need to do a engine/trans swap on the Mustang before racing season starts. The wife is wondering when I'll make time for her?

She says she will go racing with me more this year (but not plane races) Since my boy was born, he is 8, she quit going to stay home and play with him. My daughter might drive the stang, then that leaves the Maverick open for my wife, and I can just sit around and watch. Pretty sad, I have two boys, 8 and 17, not interested in racing or planes. My 19 year old daughter races, and has gone flying with me. She will make a guy real happy some day, pretty, loves fishing and racing, and is a brute, has no trouble helping load the 460 blocks in the truck!
