Hi Guys...and Gals.

I have just aquired a JOKER pattern plane from my father.....Nice of him. I have the plan sheet for the plane but nothing else. I would like to find out what type and size of servo (Futaba) to use in the plane. The best you can recommend. It has Robart retracts. Any help would be appreciated.... Flying season is just around the corner here in Raleigh, NC. and Im getting the itch. Thanks in advance. Hope to have her up soon.

Avery

decisions, decisions.....you could always save yourself from the extremely risky job of selecting the correct servos and send the plane to me. what a beautiful plane it is though. any photos?

I like Futaba too(Fly with 9ZWCII)... but I am extremely satisfied with JR's 821 sport digital in my Kaos. I know you did not put any limitations in your request, but Futaba doesn't even have a comparable servo near the price.

I just bought four of those JR DS-821's. I've been using Futaba digital 3151's (same price as the 821's). I've read a lot of positive stuff about the 821's and I'm interested in comparing them to the 3151's. They are stronger and are supposed to center a bit better than the Futabas.

This is a common question, since there appears to be TOO many choices when it comes to servos! After a 2 page thread going back and forth on which servos are better, I finally decided to go with some decent coreless BB Futabas, the S9202 on all flight controls, and some standard servo on the throttle for my Tiporare. So far, this has turned out to be a very nice setup. I wanted to go digital, but many of the other members here pointed out that since these planes were originally flown with the slow, bulky, weak servos available 30 years ago, that almost any modern standard servo would be an improvement. The digitals are unnecessary since we are looking for smooth flying, and not quick reaction as in 3D and helicopters. The extra cost of the servos themselves is high, but then you have to invest in a more expensive battery system since stardard NiMh packs won't keep up with the digis tremendous amp draw. So now you have to consider lithium flight packs, which require a voltage regulating switch, and of course an appropriate field charger. More stuff to fail.

The plan sheet is all that came with my (still partially assembled) Joker also. No instruction sheet or book, but if you have a few kits behind you, most of it should be no problem. That is, unless you have that one extra beverage on the night you assemble one wing panel and put the leading edge on BEFORE sheeting it.

You mentioned servos, and I use mostly Futaba stuff too, but on my Icepoint I used 4 9202's(ail and ele) and after about 100 flights 3 of them have failed. I know 9202's are the "ole standard" for lots of folks, so I guess I just got the Friday afternoon run. Futaba 3050's have lasted about 30 (yes, 30) gallons of fuel in my Raptor 50 heli, though, without a hiccup, and the price is right.

And, if you decide it too much trouble to decide which servos to use, send the Joker to me and MY servos will relieve the frustration

Does anyone have any history on the Joker? I have a kit built Joker that flies very well. There is a Senior Pattern contest coming up soon that I am thinking about getting in if the plane is legal. Any one that has plans, is there a date on the plans?

Thanks, Matt

Believe the Joker came out mid-80's, well after the SPA cut-off date. Chronology of Mr. Matt's designs shown at his cool website which was posted in the thread for Pattern Plane List being created by CaSniffer:

Futaba s9252s have worked well for me so far and they also fit in a standard Futaba servo foot print. When you are using digital servos as it is with all servos it is important not to have binds in the linkage. Digital servos will use their full power to move just a very small amount if something opposes their movement. Futaba radios that use s9252s come with 1500 mah NiCad batteries and have a heavy duty switch and heavy duty wire.

If you want to go for cheap and best buy on the planet. Without the amp draw problem. I use Cirrus 601's standard servos with 75oz of torque at under $10 each. they are ball bearing also. I have crashed them and not stripped gears yet. Out of about 25 bought only one was a problem. It buzzed and twitched for about 1 minute on start up and then settled down. I exchanged it at LHS because I lacked confidence in it.........
