jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/8/2008 6:55:44 PM)

Yeah, it wasn't a very scale take off, but I was running out of runway [:D] It does have plenty of power for an electric plane. It will go verticle no problem. It flys great and landings are very easy with the flaps. It's quickly becoming my favorite plane.

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/8/2008 7:57:05 PM)

Easydave,
Thanks for the kind words...i too get inspired by other people's threads, so i'm glad i can help pass the torch.[:D]
In regrad to the engine, I do feel that this plane is pretty lightweight (.60 size) and I think SIG was cognicent of the future being electric given how light it is...Point being is that That .91FS should fly her with a lil' to spare...really, It should be a perfect combo.[;)]
In regard to the retracts, I've used "EZ" brand before and they are worthwile...no reason to not use them if you don't want to...I'm just one of the converted now, and I have a hard time not using air if I can help it. Take your pick...fooling around with the retract pushrods, or having one extra thing in your field tote box to futz with at the flying site.
I use air for 2 main reasons...I like using regulators to give more realistic retract sequence, and also, I've lost a plane due to a retract servo draing that battery from the servos being under constant drawl.[:(]
I've had loads of plane with teh mechs and they work well...So take your pic.
I'll look around to se the link for the cockpit...I typically just g'oogle' P-51 cockpit and choose my favorites.[8D]
I've attached the images I used, it'll take me a bit to find out where they came from since I just e-mail them to myself from random locations.
FYI, I thpicallu do the 2 sides 1st, then overlap the pash on top of the 2 sides, between the dashboard, the pilot and all the stuff on the pics, the eye doesn't see all the descrepanies...So it works for me as a fast and cheap substitute to building o kit or one from scratch.

easydave -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/8/2008 10:03:58 PM)

NoFlaps - Thanks so much for getting back to me so fast.

Question: Did you determine that the Top FLight Cockpit kit would not fit or did you just decide to make your own. I was thinking the Top Flight kit might be to large for the opening. Amyone else have a comment on this?

Been a big fan of Air Retracts for the same reasons you stated. Dont like all the push wires for mechanical. I am sure they would work fine but the Tubing is a lot easier to install along with the controlablity of the speed of the up and down motion.

Easy Dave

Evil_Merlin -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/8/2008 10:18:05 PM)

Excellent! Seems to fly very well, but without the sound of glow or gas, it just seems to be missing something.

You did a fantastic job on it NoFlaps.

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/12/2008 7:18:52 PM)

Here's some better video of the plane:

easton24 -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/12/2008 7:44:22 PM)

Yeah Ill second that , plane flies nice with electric motor but I like warbirds with the fuel engine sound.

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/12/2008 10:36:54 PM)

Just don't balance the spinner and it sounds just like the real thing [:D] I did that with mine and wow was it loud!

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/14/2008 4:42:29 PM)

NoFlaps, any progress yet? I already have about 20 flights on mine so far. Make sure you lock-tite the rear wheel collar set screw. Mine came loose and was a b*tch to keep straight [:D]

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/14/2008 8:08:05 PM)

jmohn,
I've been travelling for business all week and haven't had a chance to hardly think about it.
Perhaps this weekend, I'll get some time.[8|]
Say, on a seperate subject I saw your nitroplanes link on the tucanno, the video link is no longer there.
If you could, would you please send me an e-mail ( sean.hagan@scaleintervention.com ) with pics of the retracts [nosewheel especially} and any info or video on how she flies.[;)]
Thanks!

Sean

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/14/2008 8:45:49 PM)

NoFlaps,

Sent you a PM.

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/15/2008 4:07:01 PM)

Got it Jmohn~ Thanks!
...I was able to see the pics, but the video crashed my computer.
Well the good news is that my malcom canopy arrived (from our Canadian Friend Mr. Middlemiss) while I was out of town, so I quickly set it in place to see how she fits.[:D]
The canopy is about 1" short, so the bad news is that one of 2 things must happen, I either need to build up more turtle deck as originally suspected or I'll need to move the entire cockpit area back about 1"...I'd rather do that, but it will be much easier to build a lil' extra razorback and conceal the work done with invasion stripes.[8|]
Here's a pic.

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/15/2008 4:32:13 PM)

The cockpit looks great! I would have done more to mine, but I wanted to fly it too much [:)] It's a great flyer and you will be very pleased once you get yours in the air.

joey_snaproll -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/16/2008 12:19:14 AM)

Hi Sean,Other then the canopy being a little short like we figured how well does it fit the sig plane,over all does it look right on it . I'm thinking maybe I should add a little to my plug..Could you trace your turtle deck former and send me a copy like to see how close ,and maybe make that the back of my plug.hope your happy with it.

thanks
Joe

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/16/2008 4:10:25 AM)

Joey, It's righ-on with the exception of the length...It would be perfect, if the plug was 3/4" longer it would be perfect.[:D]

I'm very happy happy with it though...Thanks!
P.S. Check is in the mail~[;)]
I can send you you the template still if you'd like

joey_snaproll -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/16/2008 5:33:36 PM)

Hey Sean ,Yea please send me a copy of the template ,want to see how different the back is from the plug.shouldn't be to difficult to lenghten ,it was the covering and matching the new part to the old with out to much time and fussing that was bugging me,but I figured out away to do this and might even look better.And no fiberglassing.
I'm a huge fan off the invasion stripes,I think they look great on all the planes.I did it on my .40 size p-51 and plan on doing them for my .60 and 1/5 and my royal b-25. But I 'm glad to hear your happy with your canopy.

Sooo......... every one is really happy with this plane? Any faults ? Looks good from my view, you know you can never have to many p-51's in your hanger. Might get one.

Thanks
Joe

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/17/2008 9:48:32 PM)

Well Impatience always gets the best of me [8|]and so i decided to do a combination of using the new canopy that I got and part of the existing/ supplied canopy from the ARF.
I went ahead and moved the instrument panel over further back, pulled out the pilot and cut out another portion of the cockpit back about 1".[8D]
The problem with this is that there is a bukhead that I wanted to avoid cutting, so i've butchered the clean cockpit and now have a bulkhead comming though the pilots shoulders...I'm sure I could have trimmed this piece down, and in retrospect, should have[:o], but for what this plane is....It still loks kindof OK, even if I've started hacking things up. Most people probably wouldn't notice unless they look really closely.
The pilots seat/ armour plating needed to be moved back anyway, so viola! There it is.
I painted the new canopy and put it on about 1/2" further back than it was before...So i'll need to patch a small area I cut the covering on to ensure the glue suck for the old instrument panel cover.
The malcom canopy i received has rear windows which are much more scale than the provided canopy but i didn't want to have to move the canop too far back, nor did i want to add to the turtledeck since I'm soo busy with work, that time is even more sparce and i really want to get this plane in the air.
Point being, is here she is with canopy completed [;)]

joey_snaproll -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/18/2008 4:37:18 AM)

That looks Great Sean,Seeing it on Sure makes me want to get mine done now more than ever. Can't wait to see it with the invasion stripes.

Joe

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/19/2008 3:58:03 PM)

Looks great! Got a bunch of flights in on mine this weekend. The landings are just too easy! The scale take offs are harder that the landings by far. On pavement it rolls great and the plane tracks well. I also fly is off a dirt field and the rocks throw it around a bit and sometimes make a straight take off difficult. Just get the tail up fast and it's all good from there [:D]

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/19/2008 5:28:31 PM)

Jmohn,

You're killing me when you tell me all the flights you've been getting in... [:D] I can't seem to get a break from work to do anything...All I can say, is thank goodness it's an ARF!
Maybe this weekend.
Of couse we're getting snow flurries here anyway, but it may be up to 40deg by Sunday.[8D]

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/19/2008 5:36:21 PM)

Yeah the weather has been nice for the past week or so around here and I have been taking advantage of it. It will be interesting to see if your plane needs any weight in the tail. I had to add about 3 oz. to get mine right on the CG. I moved everything aft and still had to add weight. Not much, but it's the first time I have ever had to do this on an electric plane. Usually I am adding nose weight to get the CG right.

The plane does fly awsome and gets a lot of heads turing at the fields. I need to make a sign to hang on it while it's on the ground so I don't have to keep telling everyone what kit it is and what's in it [:D]

Jeff

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/19/2008 8:22:08 PM)

because of your post telling me of all the flying you've been doing, I ran home, took a long lunch and framed in the upper "innards" for the rear radiator which would be a must for an electric plane to help direct the hot air out of the fuselage.
I also finally put the landing gear oleo's all the way into the retract unit.
The wheels supplied in the ARF fit my oleos I had laying around perfectly, but both must be for a .40 size plane because those tiny wheels look kinda silly.[8|]
I may change them out later, but for now I'm on a mission to finish that plane .[8D]
I also picked up somy Vinyl from a signage place to do the rest of the invasion stripes & other markings.
My only concern is:
Becasue it's so cold here right now, if I heat up the covering to get it to fit again, and tighten everything up...what's going to happen when I take it out in the cold to fly it, or conversely, when it starts getting warm out.
Hypothetically, it will contract when cold, and loosen when warm, but by the name alone, heatshrink will contract when warm & vice-versa...I might normally not mind, but those invasion stripes will be covering a large area and I have some concerns.
I guess that's partially why I wish I'd just fiberglass and paint the plane.
Some other time perhaps.[;)]

warks62 -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/19/2008 9:20:28 PM)

NoFlaps it won't be the cold but when it gets hot and the plane sits in the sun all day at the flying field that the problem will show. Tighten it up before you put them on real good then when it wrinkles later you will only be tightening it back up to what you had already done. This is why I just can not stand Monokote type covering anymore. Fly it if you really like how the plane flies then strip it, glass and paint. I have done this several times making a really nice plane out of an ARF.

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/22/2008 3:42:25 PM)

Okay, Throttle, rear radiator, elevator & rudder...All servos others are now hooked up and thows have been set...retracts are in and have been tested. I've started to apply the markings and ...Ta-da! I've managed to get the stripes in the wrong location, they aren't wide enough and I'm fed up with it fooling with them [:@]...I may redo it again at some point, say if i end up stripping it later and glass the plane. But for now, I'm in a hurry and when I rush I get things wrong. I just wanna see this baby fly.[8D]
Overall, it looks good, but I'm not happy with the work I've done.
In the process if getting fed up with not having enough time, I found that going with the "OLD CROW" saved me time in cutting out letters, I still need to do and applu the rest of the markings.
Sorry to dissapoint you more scale guys out there...but in this modern age, time is at a premium, and something had to give.[8|]
My plan is to have her ready to fly this weekend. If the Ice storm around here melts by then.

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/22/2008 7:15:17 PM)

Looks good! Just put the CG where they recommend and you'll have a blast!
