Gpete...thanks for the tip.
I originally wanted to use them, but the local hobbyshop didn't carry anything that big, so i chose the nylon biolts thinking that would dampen some vibration.
Who carries the hardwood stock ?
Home Depot ?

Don's Hobby Shop has some very nice aluminum stand-offs that would do nicely if it's not too late.

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/22/2008 10:55:18 PM)

I already replaced the old stand-off's from my earlier pics. [:D]
Thanks for the tip though~ as i need some for another rear carb engine I have. [8D]

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/27/2008 6:30:25 PM)

Noflaps,

Get any flights in yet? I keep having balance problems with my spinner. I just ordered a Dave Brown spinner that should solve the problem.

Jeff

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/27/2008 6:57:30 PM)

Jmohn,
Actually, I haven't...[&:]
The plane should have by all accounts been finished a-long time ago, but I suppose this is the point that I admit I have OCD issues when it come to the little things and the fact that I got the invasion stripes wrong has been drining me crazy, so last night I pulled them off [>:], taking the star and bar with them .
I tell you what: that industrial vinyl I used does not wnt to come off!
Needless to say, the stars and bars didn't make it, so I'm going to order some Major decalss, or create my own to replace the two that lost the battle last night..
with the exception to that, I've done everything else except for putting the gear doors on. the plane is flight ready except for needing to either TAP out the factory FPE prop bolt, so that it can accept the spinner or getting a new bolt and then prop nut adapter.
I guess I had better really inspect the balance of the spinner while I'm at it.[;)]

BTW -The rear radiator door is cool to see operate and it's a neat visible indicator of where the carb position is prior to starting.

Whistling Death -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/27/2008 7:13:04 PM)

I am anxiously waiting for a flight report for the gas engine. I am in the process of converting my fleet to gas. This plane could have G20 written all over it.

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/27/2008 7:29:44 PM)

I need to do the radiator thing on mine as it's starting to get warm around here now. My batteries a slightly warm and will definatly get over heated on those hot summer days. Get that plane in the air man! [:D]

Jeff

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/27/2008 9:03:20 PM)

Well, the Kentucky weather is doing it;'s usual thing this time of year which is sunny, then snowing, maybe 50 degrees by the weekend.
I should have her ready to rock by then.
[;)]

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/27/2008 9:46:52 PM)

I got three flights in at lunch time today [8D] Sorry, just had to let you know [;)]

BTW: my 16-10 prop just barely clears the ground when the tail comes up, so make sure you have some up elevator on your roll-out.

Jeff

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/27/2008 10:26:41 PM)

I was noticing that with my plane at rest that my 16" blade looked rather close to the carpet.
Thanks for the tip!
=)
P.S. Rub it in that you were able to fly 3 x at lunch.
maybe I need to move back to L.A. [8|]

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/27/2008 10:47:50 PM)

Yeah L.A. has decent weather, but too many people and the air sucks [:)] Beaches are nice though! San Jose is much better and the weather is pretty good here too.

Jeff

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/28/2008 3:52:03 PM)

In the process of striping the stripes off, I decided to take some pics of the finished Rear cooling door and servo set-up.
Originally, the throttle was on the opposite arm, but I flipped the carb on the engine so that the area req'd for cowl cutting was lessened, so now the radiator cooling door and throttle are on the same arm. [8D]
Please pay no attention to the remaining stripes.
Also, I have a short video of this door in action, but i'm not savvy enough to know how to load it to RCU.[8|]

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/28/2008 3:56:25 PM)

Sean,

You can upload the video to Utubes and just link it to this thread. It's very easy. Working on my KMP Stuka right now trying to get it detailed out nicely. It's all ready to fly, but I haven't made it pretty yet. It's suposed to be a G model, but I made mine a D by adding a rear machine gun and other little things. Should be ready for our Warbird fly in May.

Jeff

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/28/2008 6:30:16 PM)

Okay...I did it~
i've upladed the video or the rear door in action.
It's not too exciting, so don't get all worked up.
It is however, pretty neat.[8D]

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (2/28/2008 6:34:34 PM)

That's going to look very cool when you do low passes with the flaps down! I will do mine the next time it's in the hanger due to bad weather [:D] So far it looks like good flying weather until late next week. Oh well, I guess I will just have to fly it then.

Jeff

Nitrodan73 -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/1/2008 11:26:56 PM)

Is there anyone else that has this plane finished and maidened besides Jmohn? I also own this bird but I am planning to glass it and paint it but not sure what scheme I want to do. Probably the OLD Crow. I like the all Olive Drab colored birds. Anyone have any other favorite schemes in the P-51B? I don't plan on doing a build thread since it has taken me almost 2 years to glass and assemble my H9 Corsair. [8|] A baby and 2 houses later, I'm finally getting close to finishing the Corsair. I can't wait to dig into this plane!

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/3/2008 10:16:15 PM)

Dan,

Sean has been working too much and can't stop making his plane look pretty [:)] Just fly the thing!!!!! I got another four flights on mine at lunch time today [:D] I need to put that rear door in as my ESC is starting to get hot as the weather is getting nicer and I just love to fly at full trottle.

Jeff

Jimmy Bananas -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/4/2008 9:18:08 AM)

Have finished mine and the weather around here won't be any good for flying until April...Haven't had a winter like this for about 10 yrs....So far, 56" of snow amd more on the way....Another thing would of held me back, is my Saito 100 FS, ( New ) had no compression...don't know what happen to it...Was sent in last week to get it checked out...hopefully, it'll be back this week..in the meantime,am working on my F4-Phantom jet by Vmar..have the USAF version...have a Mag 91 2 stroke in it...Just taking my time and one of these days,will be out in the warm weather and sunshine flying my models.........enjoy

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/5/2008 2:29:06 PM)

I must admit, I'm a sucker for a good looking plane, but she's finally ready to go (with the exception of some missing white stripes).[8D]
We had one nice day this past weekend, but She didn't make it out.
We're due to get more snow on Friday, so we'll have to see.
I did my 1st cowled engine test run last night...I'm too excited now![:D]
In the mean time, here are a few Pics to look over showing her in my kitchen.
Some close-ups of the retract air-set up, engine installation and more.
I'd like to have a custom muffler made so I don't have the jowl cuts on the cowling, but for now, I'm too anxious.

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/5/2008 2:41:06 PM)

A few more pics~ [8D]
Bring on the good weather!

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/5/2008 4:47:52 PM)

Jmohn,

On my engine runs, with low and high speed RPM's as well as transitions, my stock spinner seemed to have balanced out just fine, but it does make a low hollow whilstling sound.

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/5/2008 6:26:24 PM)

Yours must do better with the gas mount that on my electric. I put my new Dave Brown spinner on last night and ran the motor up and it's perfect now. Not any vibration. Your custom job looks great! Can't wait for your flight report...good luck! Stay off full flaps if it's windy as you don't need them. I just use half flaps if there's any wind and it lands great.

Jeff

joey_snaproll -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/5/2008 8:35:40 PM)

I hope it flies as good as it looks ,great job Sean.

Joe

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/10/2008 11:32:26 PM)

Here's mine with a Dave Brown spinner on it. I just couldn't get the stock one balanced perfectly and it made some noise at high rpm. This one is smooth throughout the trottle curve and looks pretty cool too!

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/11/2008 5:07:11 PM)

Sean, any flights yet? I like your 163 project too. Maybe you should take a break and fly your P51B [:D]

Jeff

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/11/2008 7:31:15 PM)

We just had 12" inches of snow dumped on us last friday...I'm waiting for the weather to get better around here.[X(]
We're slated to have rain for the rest of the week as it slowly begins to warm up.
As soon as i can find the runway, I'll be out there. [8D]
