You need to move out west [:D] It's been sunny and 65 degrees out here. Hope you get some good flying weather soon.

I have been flying 3/4 days per week. I must have close to 60 flights on my P51B by now. Now that my spinner is smooth I have been flying much faster and need to add some cooling for the battery and ESC. I had one overheat today and had to make an emergency landing. No problem since this plane lands easy with the flaps. I felt the power start to drop and stayed high until I figured out what was going on and then set her down. I would guess I am going about 75-80 mph with my setup right now, maybe fast in a dive.

Too much fun!!!!!

Well I have been flying my electric P51B lots and have a ton of flights on it now. I have been really pushing the motor hard and pusing around 1400 watts through the motor. Didn't think it would hurt the motor...wrong. I had a dead stick today and landed it without incident. I thought the battery just ran out of juice, but it was the motor. I guess a 16-12 is too big : ) Next time I will run a 16-10.

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 2:51:55 AM)

FINALLY Maidened today.[:D] !!!
Had several problems (self-induced) on Fridays' proposed test flight, wheels / struts were'nt aligned and tail wheel wasn't working properly, so tests were cancelled.

Flight today was without struts, I used the factory gear that came with the air retracts, CG was a lil tricky as the the engine weights quite a bit and battery and all had to be moved all the way to the rear.
a radio glitch ocurred immediately after I retracted the gear, so I put them back down, turned her around and was trimming it out as i made the down-wind leg, set up with 1/2 flaps and settled her in nicely for a landing.

tailwheel is still a problem,, so i'll deal with that and the servo problem before the next flight (hopefully this week).
The FPE flew the plane very nicely with a 16x8 prop, but i'd like to see it with a 16x10 or 15x10.
Pics will be posted tomorrow. [:D]

Glad to See NoFlaps, saying yes to flaps!

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 2:31:55 PM)

Actually...truth being told noflaps has an affinity for flaps and I generally add them to an ARF if it doesn't come with them, but I thought it would be a fun name to use since I have been know to come in hot at times.
Here are the pics of the P-51B

P.S. Great work SIG !!! [:D]
Overall, I'd highly recommend this ARF to a modeller with intermediate building & flying experience, as it is not only wll constructed, but flies incredibly well, this is a plane that requires prior flying experience as it's a warbird and behaves like one (when I had my radio glitch, I was able to experience and unintended stall right after TO, without prior warbird experience it could have been disasterous).
that being said, she was otherwise a real pleasure to fly, and looked stunning in the air.
Not to mention that she is a more than welcome change to all those D model mustangs out there.[;)]
PROS:
construction
quality
completeness of instructions including history and pics
hardware incl;uding scale spinner
Good size (.60-.90)
Great looks of the lesser seen B model
Stable platform & flight

CONS
plastic wing fillets
plastic tail fillet
Glossy covering material

Personal note: Cost for this plane is reasonable given all the great attributes of this ARF, I only wish it were about $50.00-$60.00 less[8|]

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 5:11:36 PM)

It's about time [:D] I already burned up one motor flying mine so much. Put a new motor in last weekend and will be back in the air tomorrow. Yours looks great! I am thinking about getting another one and doing a aluminum finished in the "Blue ****s" theme.

mobyal -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 5:43:37 PM)

Noflaps --
What a great job you've done with this. I just wish it was a little bigger -- the 72" w/s range would make it just about perfect for my taste.
Have fun with yours.
Al

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 6:12:35 PM)

Thabnks guys!
I'm very pleased with the way she looks...i still need to add the machine guns, but otherwise it's very much to my taste now.
jmohn, yes, silver would look great...I hope you do it.
=)
I'm going to have to rethink the way i've done the tailwheel as it doesn't work as is...it won't lock the threads no matter how much thread-lock, glue or JBweld I use.
I can't wait to fly her again! [:)]

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 7:04:41 PM)

What changes did you make on the tail wheel? Mine works fine. The only changes I have made on mine, other that it's electric, is using a Dave Brown spinner.

Jeff

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 10:30:42 PM)

I used a Dubro "semi-scale wheel" assembly, then modified it to prevent the belly from scaping the ground.

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 10:40:10 PM)

I didn't know you did that...cool! I just picked up a Hyperion Ki84 (40 size) and am almost ready to maiden it now. Still love the P51B and can't wait to do another theme. I was thinking I would just wait until I had an "incident" with my current one, then recover it, but it flies too well [:)]

Jeff

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 10:54:04 PM)

A guy at our LHS has one of those .40 KI84's...It's an awesome mechine!

jmohn -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 10:57:28 PM)

Is his electric? I would assume so since it's setup for electric. They really did a great job on the fuze of that plane. It's very detailed and has a great battery hatch too. Cant' wait for a flight!

Jeff

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/24/2008 11:05:52 PM)

It's electric...he's asked me to do the panel lines and airbrushing on it...I'm sure he'll post pics when it's done.

Anyone else out there finished their Sig P-51B ?
Please post pics when you're done. [;)]

joey_snaproll -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/25/2008 8:17:24 AM)

Even looks better in the sun light. Great job.

Joe

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/25/2008 2:35:17 PM)

THANKS JOEY,
BUT IT WOULDN'T LOOK AS GOOD WITHOUT THE CANOPY FROM YOU....HERE'S TO YOU JOEY SNAPROLL ! [:D]

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (3/26/2008 4:18:24 PM)

Mike,
the FPE is a heavy lil' engine and I found that I had to locate the batteries pretty far back to get the plane to balance but even so, a 100 is more than enough power for this plane, and I'm the kinda' guy who likes to over power hisplanes, so I figured the 1.3 would be fine. Affter her maiden, I've found that it's a great combo.

Ed Couch -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (5/5/2008 4:52:53 AM)

Here you go, Tang down and dirty about to touchdown. Box stock except for Hobby People struts and it runs on a motor instead of an engine. Tops out about 85 to 90 + on 8 cells. ed

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (5/5/2008 2:01:06 PM)

Ed,

Wow! what a great photo!!
Anyone else have some food shots of this baby ?
I need to get some high speed film and do a series of landing/ passes...That thing looks real.

Ed Couch -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (5/5/2008 10:06:23 PM)

Here are a couple more dirty but presently waiting for some shots all cleaned up and smoking downwind on the deck.

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (5/9/2008 1:58:46 PM)

If it ever stops raining here, I'll get some pics of mine in the air...I heard a rumor it may be nice this weekend. [8|]
I find it amazing how weathermen can be wrong 85% of the time and still get to keep their jobs

Thorprops -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (5/16/2008 6:46:35 PM)

Very nice build thread, thanks alot Noflaps. Really enjoyed watching the build and your scale mods are great! My TF Mustang 60 is finally coming from Tower and I plan to do the radiator door for sure[;)] I would like to try my hand at doing a build thread for Hurry Home Honey. Let me know if you guys out there would like that.
Have a great time with your awesome "Old Crow".

Scott

hy flyr -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (6/19/2008 10:56:36 PM)

Tower got some more Sig Mustangs in so I placed my order for one. I probably won't assemble it until this winter rolls around. This is a great thread to keep my eye on!
Real nice job on yours, noflaps!

NoFlaps -> RE: Sig P-51B gas+build thread (6/23/2008 4:38:47 PM)

Thanks guys!
Post your pics & flight results when you're done!

I've been reading the posts for the Sig P51. I've got this plane on my shopping list, my wife - as is the case with most wives is not a big supporter of this hobby. However this one she'll go for. My wife is related to Don Gentile pilot of the Shangri La. For Christmas I purchased this print of Don & his P51 going out on his last sorte, the colors are stunning and it's amazing how close Sig nailed this one.

http://www.specialtymuseumgifts.com/catalog/item/3710728/3339142.htm

Questions - has anyone used some Monokote Flat Clear to "dull" the covering? Also, anyone have any thoughts on the Kelo Side exhaust?

http://www.keleo-creations.com/product_info.php?products_id=54

I see where they have the scale exhaust for 60 Hangar 9 - I'm wondering if can be adapted to the Sig?
