Fuel hatch, ok

It's not the best on the inside to be honest, but it works [8D]

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/27/2008 2:20 AM)

Wow thanks for the pictures again. I think I will start working on it tonight. I just went ahead and glued in the horizontal stab. Next I want to get the throttle linkage. Work work work, so much to do so little time I will get some pictures uploaded tonight.

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/27/2008 6:47 AM)

Finally some pictures of some things that I was able to get done today. First I decided to go ahead and mount the stab. Then I started messing with installing the control rods, the tank, and the motor. With the help of the RC Man I got the throttle linkage in and hopefully I wont have any problems. I got the fuel line installed. Then I got the landing gear installed. Those of you who have built this plane probably noticed that I have been skipping around and not following the plans.
I just get in a spot that I don't feel like messing with and I just do something else, it must be the ADD. Anyways hopefully you like the photos.

I hope to get the hatches fuel proofed and start the sheeting tomorrow. Then I will start finishing up that wing to get ready to cover it.

Also RC MAN we are waiting to see that video you got!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By the way what is best for fuel proofing these fuel prone areas.

Thinned Epoxy, Butyrate Dope, Polyurethane (Thompson's Water Seal Stuff)

Suggestions please.

Mark

DaveB -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/27/2008 12:23 PM)

I've used thinned epoxy with good results in the past, but currently I have been using finishing resin which basically is thinned epoxy.

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/27/2008 5:54 PM)

If I go to Home Depot do I just look or finishing resin? Is that what it is called.

ice the rc man -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/27/2008 6:37 PM)

I normally use dope and fuel proofer from the model shop :)

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/28/2008 3:49 AM)

Wow I love that video. That was again a quick response. For a maiden flight it appeared that it was very uneventful as soon as it was airborne, must have been set up pretty good. I got the wing sanded an the servo mounts done today. I was also able to get the ailerons sanded and ready to be hinged and connected to the servo. I will post pictures hopefully later tonight.

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/28/2008 5:09 AM)

Here are those pictures. One of the servo mount and strut support for the wing. Then a picture of the leading edge of the wing. I think I need to sand a little more thought. And last for the night is the piece of triangle stock I placed on the fuse floor in between bulkheads. I felt the floor was a little weak so this was my solution. Anyways everyone have a great week.

Could you by any chance post some pictures of the way you added the screws. We love pictures.

Well, since they're almost invisible on my plane due to the fact that they've been painted over, I figured I'd show you by way of the picture from the construction manual:

I hope it's evident that I've only shown two of the four screws that are required!

Good luck,

Phil

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/31/2008 6:28 AM)

Thank you for the time you took to do the picture I really appreciate that. how do you think this would work... What about using some balsa triangle stock and gluing them in on the top corners with some epoxy? Also i ave been looking for 1/4 threaded inserts to use for the wing bolts. I know that Du Bro has discontinued them but any suggestions will help.

Thanks again hopefully I will get some work done this week honestly I want to finish this thing up. I am getting anxious to cover it. The monokote should be here in the next day or two but before I need to fuel proof and sheet the fuse.

Have a good night.

DaveB -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/31/2008 12:17 PM)

I reinforced my "Pete 'n Poke" in a similar manner as Phlip, except I drilled small holes and glued round toothpicks instead of screws. Also as suggested, I epoxied gussets made from triangle stock on the top corners. I have been flying mine for years now without any problems.

Flytoolow -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/31/2008 1:25 PM)

Awesome build, awesome flier. I just built another Slow Poke 40 and was looking, the bottom half of the fuse and horizontal stab are the one and the same on both planes.

IMHO, screws will be stronger and last longer than toothpicks (not as likely to break inside where they can't be seen). And the gussets won't hurt anything, but I don't think they're necessary if you put in screws.

But whatever makes you happy ... just don't forget to do something!

ice the rc man -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/31/2008 2:00 PM)

I'd have thought drilling holes, then using screws would result in a weaker structure [:-] unless the screws get glued in of course.

The tooth picks, and lots of thin epoxy sound like a much better idea, perhaps even some piano wire glued in, should be posable to make it with no weak voids around the wire making it very strong :D

Mine just has some sort fabric over the top of struts, which seems to have been soaked in epoxy or something, looks to be quite strong enough.

Well yes, it's glued and screwed, of course. Plenty of 30 min epoxy. The instructions do mention putting milled fiberglass (a Great Planes product!) in with the epoxy over these joints. I just never took that advice seriously until the wing came off in flight.

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/31/2008 4:29 PM)

So many great ideas to throw around. I am torn between screws and toothpicks. I may have to go look for some piano wire at Lowes though that seams like it would be the best solution to me. I think if i glued in some thinner piano wire it may give it a little cleaner look and then add small gussts should more than do the trick. Please philip do not think that I am down playing your great idea because all of the ideas circle around the concept you mentioned. Thanks for helping me make this decision.

Next idea what do you guys think of threaded inserts for the wing bolts or if it tap and died is this plenty strong enough. If you have not noticed I want this plane to last a long while.

Thanks again all of you faithful fliers for hoping along the way.

*ouch*, bet it was pretty spectacular though, one of those through the gates in a big fireball moments [8D]

When ever fitting anything heavy always use captive nuts, and the fuse is pretty heavy ;) hehe, i use small captive nuts for wing fixing even on park fliers, just don't trust tapped ply wood to keep the wing on :)

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/31/2008 10:32 PM)

Ok that is a new term to me! Is this the same as a Blind Nut or T Nut?

Mark

ice the rc man -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/31/2008 10:36 PM)

Yeah, in this case I'd reckon so, I think captive nuts are more automotive, but the goal of the widget is the same :)

ice the rc man -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (7/31/2008 10:37 PM)

Or maybe it's a british/american thing...

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (8/2/2008 1:35 AM)

It prabably is the same things. I have found threaded inserts on the net but I will stop by the hardware departments and see what they have. Those 1/4 Blind nuts are way to big and will not work for this application.

Hopefully I will get some work done this weekend. I am hoping to be flying this thing really soon. Also I am getting ready to start a repair thread on my Dynaflite Butterfly. It got a little damaged when I moved from Abilene TX to San Antonio. Little wing damage and I will redo the tail because I dont like the one it has now. Lastly I am going to remove the monokote and start over. When I got the plane it had about 5 different monokote colors on it and it was called the UGLY FLY.

I will have to fix that.

Anyways happy flying this weekend.

Mark

spadeng -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (8/3/2008 4:15 AM)

could you grind down part of a blind nut to make it fit, I know you were looking at those threaded inserts, those things are a pain in the neck to install, you screw them in and once you have it in and back out the screw the insert comes with it, they need to be epoxied in, and they are soft brass. Blind nuts are steel and they are easy to install and tey have a good mechanical bond to the wood and when you put in the screw it makes it stronger,

You should recover that Butterfly Champaign gold and perl purple........

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (8/3/2008 7:05 AM)

Glad to see you are back Todd. Yeah I just decided to go the Hobby Shop and buy the Tap and Dye kit for about 5.00. I will trust the plans and the CA.

As far as the butterfly goes I told the kid he picks the color but I will make the suggestions. I want to go with something really really bright. Like fluorescent green and something maybe.

Anyways I got the ailerons hinged up and aileron servos and linkage mounted. I need to finish up the linkages and fuel proof everything and finish this darn thing up.

Here are some pictures maybe some of you can share photos of your radio setup.

Mark

mkharv3 -> RE: Great Planes 40 PETE N POKE Sport Build! (8/10/2008 1:51 AM)

Hey yes I am still alive I just have not had much time lately. Anyways I tried and tried to get the throttle linkage right but still have not figured it out. So I decided to go ahead and use the removable hatch idea. Hopefully this will aid in getting the throttle linkage right. Also I had a hell of a time removing the tank and putting it in. I could not imagine doing it with no hatch and trying to feed fuel lines also. Anyways here are some pictures of what I came up with.

Everyone have a great weekend!
