Dave. Re. your comment about the 3250 you were just finishing up. I suspect that may be mine and yes it was in a hellava wreck. Had just bought it on e-bay and mounted it on my 18lb. Ultra Hots to replace the 3000 I had on it(same 3000 I finally found the backplate for DUH!). There was a notable differance in power. I was on my downwind leg when I no longer had control and straight in went the hots. That broke one of the lugs off and split open the crankcase. Postmortem: Transmitter battery died. After the plane went in I looked down at my tranny and the needle was on its way down to zero. If I had another minute I would have been on the ground rather than in it.

OK, Dick.....it's interesting to note the 3250 had noticeably more power than the 3000.
They are bascially identical, except the 3000 has a 35mm bore, and the 3250 is 36mm.

Here's the report on the 3250 with all the details so you'll know....

The crank came out great.
2. the zero dial indicator
3. the total run out came out about .00025
4. I put a light hone on the cylinder to re-seat the ring
5. Heated the new case and installd the liner.

I heated the front housing and installed the new bearings. The front bearing has both shields still
on it, so it is lubed for life. The front end of the engine is sealed with a proper rubber seal anyway.
The rear bearing is open on both sides. I blew out the grease with compressed air but did not wash
the bearing, so the residual grease will keep the bearing protected and lubed.

I reinstalled the rod and piston. The cylinder wall, ring and piston and rod are oiled with Mobil 1
synthetic so no worries there. The front seal is greased on the inner lip, and I used some of my parts
and snugged down the prop collar onto the tapered collar so it is tight to the engine. Basically the
engine is totally massaged and ready to go.

The 3000 is massaged and ready to go....same story on the preperation, except I removed
the inboard shield on the front bearing just like it was stock. The ring tension is good, as well
as the fit in the bore was perfect contact. The head is torqued down.

I put a glow plug in it, and the compression is excellent. Both engines turn over perfectly and
the cranks are straight....they're ready for a great season of flying. I'm gonna package them
up and post them back today. I'll send back all the old parts as well.

Is this fun, or what ?

Dave, you are a most astounding individual. I won't say more because the more you do for all us guys who need your kind of expertise the more you are going to hear it. Just accept it. My fear is you have opened Pandoras box. In a couple of months we may hear that you changed your name, moved and left no forwarding address in order to escape all us dumb thumbers with bent cranks. DON'T ANYONE SAY ANYTHING ABOUT NON ENGINE BENT CRANKS.

Seriously my friend, thank you so much. And give me a total on the parts.

Ol man Dave lives so far back in the hills he doesn't need to change an addy. He just forgets to run the rod into town to pick up his mail for a month or three.
Don't worry guys, helping you get your engines running again is like a new woman to him.

Hang in there Pappy!

Dick.....It was 10 bucks for the ring (good price from Bowman) and 18 bucks for the brgs.

The engines are already on the way back, I mailed them (insured) two days ago.

I think I have a Saito crank coming, and a rod to stress relieve coming as well. Maybe I'll
fix up a couple engines I have laying around here till something comes in.

BTW, those Boca bearings are sweet, and economically priced....very smooth too.

Thanks for the kind words, Felas....

Received the engines today, they look and feel just dandy. Gotta finish up one project and then take a drive down past your stamping grounds to S.D. to see the zoos and the Midway. Going to put the 3000 in a Big Bee I just finished. The 2300 I have in it does not cut it. I'll let you know how it works out.

Regards, Dick.

Good news, Dick....

I'm happy you were satisfied with the quality of the work. Now I need to get busy
and fix up my two S.T. 3000's while I wait for some more work to come in. I should
have a Saito crank to straighten soon.

Dave,

Nice work.

I've used a well worn and plugged up brake hone on my engines. A little less aggressive but it did the trick.

....yep. Removing the old glaze and preparing the cylinder wall for a new ring is the key. Almost
any small hone will work....you can even prepare the surface by hand.

Hi Dave ... My ST 90 slightly bent crank (1/4") is on the way. US mail charged me $1.98 to ship it and would not sell me a pre printed postage . They would only sell me a $1.98 in stamps so I sent them in box. This way you don't have to go to post office.
Thanks Randy---Oh it is probably the worst bent crank you have seen without snapping off..........

....Edward....your Saito engine arrived today. I picked it up at 1:00 this afternoon.

1. Your packaging was excellent, it came through in perfect shape.
2. I used the puller, but the prop stud was really tight.
3. I put some some heat on it for 3 seconds, but before I could grab the camera, the
stud popped off. I put about 20 pounds pressure on the puller.
4. The tapered cone was stuck tight too.
5. Set up to check run-out.
6. You had .012 run-out (bend).
7. After straightening, zero on the dial gauge.
8. Run-out (to the left) almost perfectly straight.

I repackaged it and had it coming back your way Priority Mail at 2:30. It should be back
home on Monday. Thanks for the "extra postage"....much appreciated.

Is this fun, or what ?

FBD.
