Hi, I am Alex, im 13, and I live in Lima, Peru. There are some really wack slopes here, and the best one is Park Ghandi. Winds there reach as high as 19 mph. I fly a homemade Zagi and use it as a test platform for aerodynamics experiments. I was once told that if the winglets on the sides extend farther than the flaperons, the winglets will become ineffective at eliminating turbulence. If they are cut to extend to the end of the airfoil but not reach the flaperons, would this decrease turbulence and ing pull, and boost aerobatic performance. Is this true_ please post or send a mail to me at alex.schweig@gmail.com

I've seen lots of different set-ups on Zagi's and most other combat wings. What I've found to work best is to make the winglets be 1/3rd below the tip and about 2/3rds above the tip. This also allows you to use thinner, lighter winglet material, since they are less prone to fluttering, and they seem to be very effective.

I flew my first two Zagis (the 48" Razor) without winglets, and while they flew OK, they were much less stable at low speed, and if hit while flying combat, they were much harder to recover. On my third one I went to winglets and didn't look back.

I think you can get some big performance gains by slowly moving the center of gravity back (on the modern Zagi's its at about 8" back from the nose) and reducing your elevator rates.

I've found with no winglets or anything for a vertical surface, at very low speeds the plane is quite happy to fly sideways... in the direction of the wing span. There's no control of course, but it is amusing to see.
This look-alike was designed with no vertical at all.
I tried it that way, with tiplets, and a center fin, after its initial appearance with an electric motor and SIG WONDER style tail end.
One arrangement of the tip fins showed an inward deflection, because of the lack of any below-the-wing area to balance that above the wing.
