jmohn -> Sig P51B electric + build + maiden (1/23/2008 5:27:24 PM)

NoFlaps started out showing some great out-of-the box photos of this plane, so I won't go there, but the kit was well boxed and had no damage. All the parts were in the kit. The instruction manual is very detailed and easy to follow.

Here is the information on the components:

Motor: E-Flight Power 60 (1400 watts w/ 16-12 prop)
ESC: Castle 85 HV
UBEC: Castle 10 amp peak
Battery: Thunder Power 6S 5000 mah pack
Servos: flaps & alerons = 255s, elevator = 322, rudder = 577, retract = 507

Contruction went smoothly and by the book until getting to the motor and battery installation.

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 5:31:37 PM)

After placing the motor farther out on the mount I had to move it aft to get the CG right. This is the first plane I have ever had to move things back to get the CG right. I had the ESC installed right behind the motor, but had to move it back too. I moved the main battery aft as much as possible and the flight pack too.

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 5:40:06 PM)

The only tricky part of the build was getting the belly scoop installed. The alignment was difficult and I ended up adding a piece of balsa to support the wing bolt tubes where they meet the wing. It just seemed too weak.

The flaps have good deflction and the wheels and doors fit perfect.

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 5:43:26 PM)

Just started getting the details going. Pilot is a H9 1/6 scale bust. I will be adding a detailed cockpit, radio and other items to make it look more scale. It's all ready to fly this weekend if the weather holds. I will try and do some taxi testing later today to see how it handles. I am going with the decals supplied with the plane, I don't want it to look like NoFlaps plane [8D]

Ron101 -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 6:53:33 PM)

Jmohn...
every thing is looking great!!
I think maybe you should move your ESC out in the cowl area for cooling?
what do you think?

Let us know how she flys!!
Ron

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 7:24:01 PM)

That's where I originally had it mounted, but had to move it back to get the CG right. I added some additional air holes in the firswall to help with cooling and installed a tube to blow air over the ESC too. It's the first plane I ever had to move stuff back when converting to electric. I will try and take some video of the maiden flight this weekend, it the weaterh holds. It's not looking too promissing though.

Ron101 -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 9:13:19 PM)

Right on... sounds like you have it under control

now if this weather would clear .. I have a plane to maiden myself
I see your in San Jose .. I fly in Livermore
not to far from you

good luck!!
Ron

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 9:16:49 PM)

Ron,

How is the Livermore field? I drive by it all the time and it looks very nice. May be a good alternative to Tomcats as it gets crowded at times. Last weekend we were waiting for the jets to land so we could fly [:)] I love those jets, but hate flying when they are in the sky. We are usually the only electric guys at the field.

Ron101 -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 9:32:42 PM)

I really like it.. great group of guys
the runway is pretty nice.. it's black mat ... a little bumpy not bad at all
I've been flying there for 6 years.. we have a good group of electric guys
but still much more gas.. I have gone completely electric except for one 60 sized mustang
but I plan to do the hanger 9 150 sized P-47 electric after my Tamjets A 4
We don't have enough warbirds at all.. we have a few.. lots of big imac planes and heil's
The plane I have to maiden is an electric F-16 it's a turbine conversion to electric
I'm going to meet Tam at Tomcats when the weather clears..
I'm sure you have seen Tam out there... if you want to come fly as a guest let me know
PM me any time
Ron

Heres a picture of my F-16 ready to roll

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 9:45:05 PM)

Ron,

Yeah I may have to get one of Tam's F16s. I talk with him all the time and he is great getting guys going with their new jets. I am not sure about the performance with the EDFs at this time and may wait a bit. I was impressed by the new BMV electric jet. It was very impressive and fast. After watching about 6or 7 jets last weekend at Tomcats I was blown away by the difference in performance between the turbines and EDF jets. I think with the right motor and setup they could be close, but they were getting blown away by the turbines last weekend.

Ron101 -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 10:30:04 PM)

I feel the electra is the best 120mm EDF jet on the market
I have Tams A-4 to build (which goes real nice on electric) I feel is the best scale arf EDF out there
the P-47 to do
then I'm building an electra .. I'll build it next winter.. it's a builders kit.. built up wind and stab.. fiberglassing, paint the works
and it's $3500 bucks for the kit and fan.. not really a deal..lol.. but very nice

This F-16 should do pretty good.. around 130 to 140.. and I have far less in it as a starter jet about $2000

The electras are going over 200 mph
pretty cool that electrics have come so far.... Tam is really helping people out with EDF
maybe I'll run into you down there

sorry to get off track
Ron

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 10:55:25 PM)

Ron,

Send me an p e-mail if you head over to Tomcats to meet Tam. I will try and let you know if I will be out there. Tam has been trying to get me in an F16, but I need more speed [:D]

MBLAKECC -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/23/2008 11:25:47 PM)

RE SIG P-51.WAITING FOR A AXI 4320-16 MOTOR. WENT TOGETHER FINE. WILL HAVE A CHALANGE WITH THE AREO SOUND. PLAN TO MOVE THE BATTERYS BACK TO GET THE CG CORRECT. PLAN ON A 3 + 4 CELL 5000 EVO IN SERES. USING THE SAME ESC AND 2 BEC ( RECEIVER + RETRACT). SEPERATE BATTERY FOR THE AREASOUND.

MBLAKECC -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 12:16:34 AM)

PAINTED THE WHEELS LIKE PICTURE ON BOX COVER. RED + BLACK

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 12:21:31 AM)

I was thinking of painting the wheels too. I think red out side and grey inside for mine. Make sure you get all your gear as far aft as possible or you won't make the recommended CG.

MBLAKECC -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 12:23:40 AM)

GOOD LUCK ON THE MADEN. PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES.

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 12:28:45 AM)

Thanks, I will make sure to get some video of the plane flying. Hope the CG is good, I went with the recommended setting from Sig. It seems too far back for me, but they should know.

Jeff

MBLAKECC -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 3:54:45 PM)

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO CHARGE YOUR MAIN BATTERY? WITH AN EXTERNAL PLUG?

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 4:52:42 PM)

No, I will have to pull the wing off for charging and bettery replacement. I have a few of the 6S 5000 mah packs, so I can change them and keep flying.

Did some detail work on the cockpit last night and have it looking nice. He's all ready to fly. Just need to apply the decals now.

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 4:54:20 PM)

Here's one with the canopy in place. The light was bad, but it gives you an idea of the overall look.

MBLAKECC -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 6:06:11 PM)

NICE DETAIL. HAVING A HARD TIME GETTING PICTURES AS AN ATTACHMENT

MBLAKECC -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 6:16:30 PM)

TRYING TO GET MY PICTURES TO POST AS AN ATTACHMENT. WHAT IS TH TRICK?

RCAV8R1 -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 6:35:42 PM)

Jeff,

Can you edit the subject as a SIG P-51B electric + build?

I had a some what hard time finding this in the search mode

Steve

jmohn -> RE: Sib P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 7:59:16 PM)

Oops, I didn't even notice I did that. Sorry!

Evil_Merlin -> RE: Sig P51B electric + build (1/24/2008 8:23:07 PM)

jmohn what was the cost of the electrics for this bird?

I'm having fun with my little electric T-28 and figure a slightly bigger bird with electics, a bit more scale, couldn't hurt.
