Jens, That is a nice looking puller.  I tried making one last year after seeing your post on another thread, and it worked on the cap, but there wasn't enough room behind the bearing in the crankcase to get the jaws behind it.  I kept shaving them  until I could, then at  the first snug the end popped right off the shank.  It required a max thickness of 0.010" to get in behind the bearing.  It was at that point I moved to using the wax and a tamp rod.

This may have been just one engine, and it did work on the cap, but the fit was just too close in the crankcase for it to work.

I'm in the process of using your design though for a puller for main bearings.

You an use tapered end of the screw instead the rod in the hole at the puller. Let us say: The hole in the puller is treaded inside with tapered hole from mid of length to end of the puller + screw with tapered pin . When the screw is turned into, then the puller is expanded firmly in the inner ring bearing, then pull out the old bearing.

Needing to disassemble a 1.20 Surpass sent me searching for information on how to get the cam bearings out. This is the thread that solved the problem for me.

I started out with a tool like the one that Hellcat 1 showed with just a single foot but I couldn't get it to work. I finally decided that I had to make the split tool for an even pull. But I don't have machine tools so I couldn't make a tool as fancy as Motorboy's, no way to drill for a center pin. What I finally came up with was a low tech method of making Motorboy's tool.

I made mine using a socket head capscrew, a grinder, a Dremel with a fiberglass cutoff wheel and a pair of Visegrips. Without the center pin the legs wanted to close up when I would try to pull the bearing. So I made a shim from a washer just barely too thick to fit between the legs. I cut the washer in two and then thinned one end of it forming a wedge.

Clip the tool into the bearing, reach in with a thin pair of needle nose pliers and seat the wedge between the legs, assemble the washer and bolts, then pop the whole assembly in the oven. It worked great!

I didn't bother slotting the other tip for a screwdriver, I just used a couple of nuts locked against each other. I also used the socket like Hellcat 1 to pull the bearing out of the cap.

Thanks for the help guys, couldn't have done it without you and I wanted to add a few notes on how I did it without specialized tools.

Dave

Hi, I made this little tool to get the stubborn cam bearings out, slips into the 5mm ID,tighten draw bar, apply some heat and pull. Fits OS singles and copies ie. ASP MAGNUM etc. PM me if you want one.

That's a real nice looking tool you made Stewart!

There's another guy also selling a tool for removing bearings in blind holes. It's pretty pricey, but it is a nice looking tool:

Yes that other tool is a nice bit of kit but does not come in the correct 5mm ID bearing size. Also I am concerned the pin may punch a hole in the crankcase behind the bearing,it is only 1mm thick... My little puller is only made for removing R/C engine Cam bearings and with a bit of heat does it well.
