I was wondering if building on a glass top is good? I have heard a little about it at the local club and some of the guys said that once I build on glass I will never go back. I just wanted some more opinions and would like to know what type of glass I should use. Any input would be helpful. Thanks!!!!

Glass is the building surface of choice used by Dave Platt. I have a number of his DVD series in which he imploys glass. My understanding is that you want a thick glass, 3/8" minimum. Look for used plate glass from a comercial building or perhaps a used glass dining table. I recently priced new glass at a glass supplier and was disappointed in the price they quoted me. I build on metal with magnets, but wouldn't mind having a couple of sheets of glass for some fiberglass work.

Thanks for the input Scott. I'm hearing alot about the cost of new glass and how expensive it is. Theres a guy in my club I just joined who swears by it. How do you like the metal / magnet setup? Pat

I like it. It works pretty good and with a good collection of magnets, it's pretty flexible. It does take a little bit of maintnance. Mine is cold rolled steel, and it is prone to rust. To prevent that, I wax it every once in a while. On benefit of waxing is that the occational spot of glue or epoxy just pops right off with a rasor. If you haven't seen it already, I recommend checking out www.airfieldmodels.com for more info on building on steel.
