Hey,

I was mixing some polyester resin with some West System 410 Microlight the other day when I read the packet. There it states in bold, "DO NOT MIX WITH POLYESTER RESINS!", but it doesnt state why.
I went on their website and this is what they state about the product:

410 MicrolightTM is the ideal low-density filler for creating a light, easily-worked fairing compound especially suited for fairing large areas. Microlight mixes with greater ease than 407 Low-Density filler or microballoons and is approximately 30% easier to sand. It feathers to a fine edge and is also more economical for large fairing jobs. Not recommended under dark paint or other surfaces subject to high temperatures. Cures to a tan color.

Doesnt polyester cure at a higher temperature than epoxy? If so, thats why they state the above.

Do you think if 410 Microlight is cured at a high temperature, it could give off toxic fumes???

I think you'll find that the polyester will melt the micolite. I don't think it would be dangerous, just messy.

That sounds reasonable - I don't know what micro-light is constructed from, but the conflict with polyester is probably a chemical issue.

I've used cabosil in Polyester worked flawlessly for what I was doing. I never read instructions though, you should probably not read them too.

cabosil and Microlight are differnt things. Microlight sands very easily, cabosil is like a rock.

Ive mixed up about 4 batches and had no problem. One time my eyes got a little sore, but I think that was the polyester. On the last batch, the mix was a little dry (I find that when mixing with polyester, I have to make it wetter compared to epoxy), and when I went to sand it, it was very hard and kept cloging my sandpaper. I did notice after sanding for about 10 seconds, the area became pretty hot. Now I sand it wet and it never gets hot or clogs the sandpaper.
It doesnt look like the microlight melts when mixed with polyester
Just as a precaution, I now where a respirator when mixing the two.

Ive found the MSDS for the product, and the only thing I can find is this: 'Strong oxidants, especially when hot'

I use 410 alot for filling and fillet making. With the WS epoxy it sands almost exactly like balsa and feathers well. (Its light too) I have heard what it is made of but it has been awhile. I think that it is a phenolic product, although it could be some other plastic. I guess what ever it is the polyester could react with it.
