One of my favorite rockets was the booster/shuttle combo as shown. Over the years, the shuttle has gotten damaged, but repairable I think. The little shuttle made a nice slow spiralling glide. I think an RC guided shuttle would be a great flier. If you wanted to build one with about a 24", or so, span, how would you design the rocket? Maybe a better way to ask the question is how to determine the size of motor required? Scaling the size up from the model wouldn't be too difficult. Probably been done already. Imagine a video downlink!

It's been done in several sizes.

I have a two channel orbiter that flies on a scale main tank and SRB's that use a single G motor, built from prototype plans from CJS aviation. You can get the kit from Sheri's Hot Rockets... http://www.cjsaviation.com/projects.html

My buddy Andy Woerner of Polecat Aerospace has built several large HPR versions in composite, and has flown them as well. He makes a kit to special order - carbon fiber and glass - but bring a big wad of cash, the kits start at $2500. We have been drop-testing his latest orbiter off of a 1/3 scale World Models J-3 powered by a DA-100 (!!! the orbiter is big AND heavy).

As a heads-up, the obiter's glide ratio (L/D) - in ALL sizes - is about 2-1 on descent and maybe 4-1 in the flare. It's a very short flight!

I don't have any pictures handy, but you can see Andy's first shuttle - that has flown on two J's and a K - on display at Discount Hobbies in San Diego.

Yep....I mentioned Sheri's kit...but didn't want to post her pics here (to avoid a repeat of the TRF "morals" debate debacle of a year or so ago...) [:D][:D]

yeah, I guess I kinda skimmed though your post. I forget that Sherri is also CJS aviation..

And the same debate Sherri had on TRF a while back about the same thing.. posting her pics..



And yes, i am the same as on TRF (Homer & his gun!)

Now you got me thinking about micro servos on my Dr Zooch shuttle.
