No, your not the only one

Airconditioning unit went out to the house, but I still had AC in the garage. Best night of sleep I had in ages.

As to the pegboard, definately paint it white, it is worth the effort. I have some that I painted and some I did not, and its a big difference in how it absorbs/reflects light.

Having the hobby shop away from the house with wife in it is nice and has many advantages. Now the rc orders from Tower can show up unnoticed along with the credit card bill and that lowers the boiling point some on the ole honey. My flying is already improving because I have less stress.

If you are building new you might want to consider putting peg board up all over. For 1/4" it is ~$18 per sheet and you can get it prepainted white.

Kaos1964, your pole barn is like mine with 12’ ceilings. The best type of heat for such a structure is a Gas Infrared Tube Heater.
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/7D837

Best thing about heat like this is it heats items in the shop like the floor, workbench, tools, you. It’s completely possible to go out into your shop in the dead of winter, turn on the heat and immediately start working in a tee shirt and be comfortable (as long as your under the heater), even though the thermometer on the wall still reads 30 degrees.

With that type of heat it’s not necessary to finish out the inside of your barn, but if you wanted to keep it up to temp all winter long then you certainly would want to. The best place to start would be the ceiling. Steel siding, just like what’s on the outside of your barn, is available for interior applications. It’s a cheaper by the foot than exterior but isn’t treated to battle the elements. Insulating then putting white steel on the ceiling would do wonders. You won’t believe how much brighter your shop will be too. To complete the process you would want to stud out the interior, insulate and sheet the walls. I’ve seen steel used there too but would recommend a sheet product like ply or OSB.

The one thing no one has mentioned if you can swing it is extra ventilation and dust control. Many things I like to use in the hobby get pretty noxious in enclosed spaces.

I picked up a sheet of pegboard at Lowe's for $22.00 that is already painted an aluminum color. It looked so good that I bought a can of aluminum spray paint and painted a smaller scrap piece of regular unfinished pegboard that I had on hand to hang all my measuring instruments on.
The aluminum color still reflects light, but also wipes clean easier than latex paint. Besides, it really looks cool!

I finished my basement and the wife gave me a 15x15 room to set-up. I have 16 planes and wings, a build table, a work bench and a power table. I have dbl doors going out to the backyard (Walk-out) and a flying field right their-fair setup. Note my new saw, a Micromark, same as a proxxon-ITS GREAT.

Well, we are all moved in. My workroom is useable. I put in 5 8ft florecent lights. One wall has 4ft tall by 13ft wide pegboard (white) and 6 outlets evenly spaced on it. Painted the floor gray which really made the room bright.

The lighting is EXCELLENT. No shadow's or dark spots. I have 2 6ft folding tables and my 8ft workbench but will soon add cabinets with stainless or solid countertops.

My son was born on Feb 29th so I have been busy helping my wife take care of him and my buisiness (which is part of this room) has been doing pretty well so R/C work time has been non-existent. This will change as I am excited to have this great space to work in.

The room ended up being 415 sq. ft and will be great.

I will add some before and after pics very soon!!

Hey folks

Great looking shops all of you - sdcranford congrats on the long-awaited space!

Posting here because I'm looking for ideas regarding heating a rather large shop of my own. Been here for a couple of years and to say the least it's time to think about some insulation / heat in my space. Anyone have any experience "finishing" a "barn" like this and heating it? Not my intention to hijack the thread at all - if inappropriate please delete.

Regards,

Bob
Hi, looks like your going to need to put in some vertical studs on 16" centers on the walls. Then you can roll some fiberglass insulation in the spaces and sheet rock the whole thing. I can't see the ceiling so you need to see what works (code) in your area. I live in SoCal so we don't get the four seasons like you folks out there. Thus I don't know what people around there are useing as far as the insulation thickness (r value) is for your area. You may want to run all your electrical after studding and before insulating. Suggestion....... If you do this, make provisions for cable TV and a sound system.. just run the wiring and cap it out at different places so that in the future you can add those features if you need to. The wiring is cheap and you will love not having to fish wire in the future if you want to add the good stuff later.

I like that "barn" concept you have now. It is away from the main living area..... you can hide from the wife or kids if need be.........you can do engine run ups if need be without the wife ****ing all day about the noise. If you instruct the UPS driver to only deliver packages to the barn then the wife won't see all the toys you are getting. It has many benifits.

Hi have the very same saw..... tip!! make sure you take the side panel off every now and again to clean out saw dust that builds up in it. It does have a vac hose outlet to suck up the dust but I don't use it during cutting as the noise of both the saw and vac are to much for me. I just cleaned out mine after cutting some stuff. When I looked at the saw there was smoke coming out the sides and top.not much but the saw was not running so I figured I had a small blaze going on inside the saw. When I opened up the access panel I was shocked at how much saw dust was built up inside. Now I clean it out after every use by just using the shop vac to suck up the dust.

Other than that you will just love that saw so much. It is the second most used tool in my "shop" next to my Dremel tool.
