My wife and I are purchasing a new home and closing on Feb 8th. Its a walkout basement home and the main reason for me being excited is a 26' x 14' unfinished room with an 13' x 40" nook on one of the 26' sides.

On the left side when you walk in there are two doors, one to a storm shelter and one to the HVAC room. So nothing can go on that wall.

Any ideas or suggestions? The wall opposite side of the entry door is concrete but I am thinking of putting studs on the wall and putting peg board and plenty of outlets. I want an island in the middle. I have to also use this space for my work but that is only a 6ft table and a milling machine and surface grinder.

The best thing is this room is climate controlled vs. my old small shop was a corner of a garage and like today being 15 degrees outside it is not plesant.

Also, my father is a retired electrician so wiring anything is not a problem.

I would like to have cabinets, but would like them to be over waist high. Any pics of your shop would be appreciated.

I hate you

Kidding...I would kill for that space. You can't beat my mortgage rate though!

Trust me, its been a long time coming. Either 100 deg. outside and sun shining on my pale legs while working on R/C or freezing with 3 layers on and glue not setting. Or the wind whipping through my garage and knocking all of my wings on the ground.

As of right now I have only one 6ft by 3ft work table and in order to make room for the wifes car at night I have to put everything back on that table (3 fuse's) so I can't start a project unless I can move it later that night.

Now I will be able to have a couple projects going at once and can let my cat's in to do their investigating but close the door so the dont eat my balsa.

Next to the shop is a 42' x 20' 2nd living area where my 2nd fridge (which will be full of beer), wet bar, and 51" TV will be so I can relax while glue sets....did I mention I am excited??

Yeah the mortgage will be fun but will be worth it. 5.5% Fixed for 30yrs is pretty cheap though!!

wooo...."2nd fridge, wet bar, 51" TV"

That's not a shop...that's a "Man Cave"

Still got ya beat...30yr fixed 5.25% we're not moving any time soon. Guess I need a bigger shop out back.

Especially since the only bedroom down there is my 9yr old son's and our Wii is down there too.
We might have to put a "no girls allowed" sign at the bottom of the stairs.

My son is already asking for an air hockey table for next christmas.

To your point though...do you have any large tools like a drill press or a band saw that need a fixed station? Or existing shop fixtures?

I would place those first and decide where to run the electric.

I strongly recommend that you sheet rock the walls and ceilings and paint them white. Nothing eats up the light more than an unfinished space! It'll add a bit more sound and heat insulation too. Put in some recessed lighting and there will be more head room. All these will add $$$ to the resale value of the house. If you are paying PMI, it might even increase your equity to the point where you can drop it and save $$ each month.

Here's my garage workshop. When the house was assesed for a refi, they estimated that the added value of the work was about 20k.
I had about 3k total invested for new garage door, sheeting/insulation of the walls, electrical and cabinets. I did all the work myself including the cabinets. They are MDF with poplar faceframes and the doors and drawer fronts are all made from ply. The tops are laminated formica. Doing my own cabinets let me make them to the size I want. This included cabinets that are long enough to hold kit boxes. I still haven't done the ceiling because I use the area for storage. But it does make the space darker.

Any pics of your shop would be appreciated.

1st one is my old shop, 2nd one is after the remodel.........sorry, just couldn't resist

I'd kill for your kind of space. Congratulations on getting a "Hobbyist Heaven" I'd fix it up a lot like Saramos has his, but I'd never be able to keep it that neat. Do you really use it, or is it just for show, Saramos?

But I got ya both beat on mortgage; 4.875% at 15 years, with five years and a couple of months left to go. (3rd refinance to get the rate). The 3rd pic is my shop, the front half of a 1-1/2 car garage. I just redid it and put the big table in (4x7 feet) I just don't have any storage.

Hey folks

Great looking shops all of you - sdcranford congrats on the long-awaited space!

Posting here because I'm looking for ideas regarding heating a rather large shop of my own. Been here for a couple of years and to say the least it's time to think about some insulation / heat in my space. Anyone have any experience "finishing" a "barn" like this and heating it? Not my intention to hijack the thread at all - if inappropriate please delete.

Regards,

Bob

I manage to clean up between projects. Actually, the photos were done when I was in the painting stage, so I had just cleaned and dusted. When I'm in the middle of a building spurt, it can become a real disaster! It took me about 6-8 months to transform my workshop from the photo below.

Wow, you do have a great mortgage! I went the opposite way, from a 15 year to a 30. But that paid for a 25% share in a 40 unit apartment complex in Ga.

Now that barn is a REAL workshop! I would guess the easy way to insulate would be styrofoam panel insulation. My pick for best way would be to frame out the inside with 24" centers, spray with expaning polyurethane insulation and finish the inside walls. Guess you could use metal studs too.

Meaden - Yes I have a large milling machine and a surface grinder. I plan on putting them in first thing as I need to get my business up and running ASAP.

Saramos - I love your shop! Great work!! The ceiling and 1/2 of the walls are already sheetrocked and painted white. On the concrete walls I plan on using 2x2 or 2x4 studs to create a void area for outlets and put white peg board up. Seems like I can never have enough peg board room. I will probably do cabinets on the lower portion then above the counter top have the peg board.

Kaos - That barn is awsome! That is what we all need. My ultimate dream is about 50 acres, have a 2500 sq ft house, about a 40x60 shop (heated of course) for R/C and just about anything else. Then have my own private asphalt runway! I guess this will hold me over until then!

Keep the ideas and photo's coming.

I will take some pics while I am there tommorow measuring for blinds.

Overhead propane or nat.gas ceramic grid heaters like the ones used in chicken houses work well.I have one in my shop 28x28 and it will run you out. Also insulate as much as you can it makes all the diference.

Hi Ken,

Got you all beat. House is paid for...no mortgage I noticed the J-3 Cub with the CAP insignia on the shelf, right hand photo. Were you by any chance a CAP member, or were you just modeling that famous cub with the bomb on antisub patrol ? I'm no longer active but I spent the better part of 20+ years in the Maryland Wing (also on the CAP National Historical Committee). Just curious.

I am not married so I can build in my living room. Cool, in summer, warm in winter. Tv, computer and fridge all in easy reach.
