Is there any perticular way to determine the date of a kit by the box mfg. ???
Sig's older RC kits and the boxes they were packed in is my primary concern, but any other mfg's tips would be appreciated as well.

Thank's

I do not know of a data base for any of the kit boxes and many of them would be used for years and years without change.

Looking for a postal code (zipcode) where you would find the address could help get you to an era but not likely a year as zipcodes were slowly adapted into use over a number of years since the announcement of the system in 1963. I do not know if there was ever an across the board requirement for the use of the zipcode that one could use to date a kit.

Good luck with your efforts, Robert

Robert, Thanks

There is a Logo on the bottom of my older Kobra kit, Reads=
Hawkeye Corrugated Box CO. Cedar Falls, IA. 50613
but next to that is another marking 830 K BTM

But on my original Kougar (75) the logo is different slightly,
Hawkeye Corrugated Box CO. Cedar Falls, IA. NO ZIP CODE
but next to that is another marking 730 K BTM

Just curious.

Hi Wornboots,

I worked at Sig from Aug of 1976 to Aug of 1978....(Designed the Colt and worked on a few others.) Boxes were about the only thing that Glen Sig bought ready to use. Everything else was done in house! Labels, instruction books, plans etc. The Kougar had already been in production a few years when I got there and the Kobra was done after I left, so that may narrow your years down a bit. There is a guy who works at Hawkeye Box who also worked at Sig and he may be able to help you. His name is Dave Falkenhagen.

Good Luck!

Jeff

date of a kit

I've had better luck dating girls, but to each his own.

I've never been too interested in dating the box either, it's the blow up dol...

Oh, never mind!

Seriously though, most box manufacturers print either a date or a date code on their boxes. Because many product manufacturers who purchase boxes do not want their product to look "stale" by the inclusion of an obvious date on the box, deciphering the code can be difficult.

Thanks, I thought that was the case with some Mfg's and then others use generic markings or none at all.
You know how much help and talent is found on RCU and being a long shot, I thought I'd try anyway.

One of my priorities is Claude McCullough's designs and when I run accross one (kit) that looks like it could be an original I take a closer interest, its just one of my ways of enjoying this hobby.

Hi Wornboots....

Sad news.....Claude McCullough passed away on Wednesday at his home in Montezuma. I can't even begin to tell you how much I learned from him in the two years I worked at Sig. We have lost one of the true legends of modeling.

Jeff,
I Had just read the bad news in another forum on RCU, Its very Sad indeed................

I plan to build more of his designs, but now as a "Dedicated tribute"
Dan

When I posted the above I had not heard the news yet, just an example of how fast things change.
