"The locations of the N-struts on the wings shown on the plans turned out not to be precise scale

The N-struts are typically fastened to spars, and our model spars are not in the same relative location as in full size.

Indeed, that's why I glued a piece of ply to the spar and made a bracket to go over the spar with the little block, so that the strut position could be made correct

The brackets for the upper wings have now also been made, and the upper port wing has them fitted.
Now the other side to go, and then I can go ahead and make the N-struts, followed by the flying wires.

The brackets have been completed and the left N-strut has now also been made. That took some time as everything had to been measured, checked and re-checked etc. But it fits beautifully.
I can now go ahead and design/make the flying wires (or are they landing wires?). Does anyone happen to know the thickness and width of the full-scale ones?

I was thinking of making them out of a firm material, such as carbonfibre rods, which could then be fixed at one end and then the other end could simply be pushed into a piece of fuel tubing in the wing to hold it in place...

"I can now go ahead and design/make the flying wires (or are they landing wires?)."

They are both. The ones from the bottom of the fuselage to the wing are, flying wires. The ones from the the cabane to the bottom wing are landing wires. Think about the forces applied to the wings under those conditions

Great job your doing on the Waco! Your a very talented model builder. I bought the plans several yrs.ago, but never built it. I got the plan out after seeing your project and found that I cut a section from the top of sheet one. I don't remember why.Can yoy tell me what it was? Thanks, Ted in Mich.

Here is a photo of sheet 1, with a close-up of the area I think you mean, the saddle for the bottom wing.
It is made up of two pieces, I will check my build photos to see if I can show you.
The shape of the saddle can also be seen on the drawing of the fuselage side, which you can trace or photocopy and cut out.

I'm subscribed!, Great building thread, looking forward to see more, how are you coming along? wished I found this thread earlier in my re-build.

Myself I am in the middle of rebuilding a Sig Waco SRE that a friend of mine found (crashed than rebuilt than crashed again) at a swap meet for me, so I totally rebuilt the front end and bottom, also have changed many other things on it since I started, but now after seeing your build I might have to go back and rebuild my tail feathers to be more scale looking LOL!! great job building on your build, again looking forward to more.

willey

first pic is how I got it, second is where I am at now, ton more I have to do, just finished up the radial last night - have to mount it now, making new windshield/frame next, old one on just for effect.

Great, thank you for your contribution; your dummy does indeed look great!
And I didn't have that pic of NC20961 yet, although I have a whole series of it, I didn't have one with the lighting switched on yet

I have now purchased landing and flying wire (two different widths) from Mick Reeves.
I got the tension springs this morning to build them into the wings, so that is the next step.

thanks, yea I hoped you didn't mine me posting da battered toad in your thread, you know the I only could fine a couple pics of the red one, very tough to fine good close ups on the SRE. If my reading is correct there are only 3-4 flying in the world from what I understand? I have quite a few on the two yellow ones.

If you don't mined could you post a few you have, that word "series" you used sounds pretty interesting< LOL!! here's all I can find on the red one.

Of course I don't mind

Yes, as far as I know, there are currently three SRE's in flying condition;

NC58785 (Yellow with green trim)
NC 1252W (Yellow with black trim)
NC 20961 (red)

A fourth is being restored, NC20967, but apart from what can be found on http://www.antiqueairfield.com I have no further information.
John Howard (also on this forum) has been so incredibly kind to get pictures of the SRE for me and I'm sure he'd be happy to share them with you too, if you ask him nicely

I love your picture of the three SRE's together; yet another picture I did not have!
