I am contemplating trying to build my own pack for my Evader ST. I'd like to try one of these custom A123's in my truck. I'm thinking of going brushless and the A123 batteries seem pretty amazing so if I wanted to try some do-it-yourselfing with the Dewalt or Black & Decker? packs what would I need to buy to get around 11.x volts as well as chraging capabilities? I've seen the dapter which might work with my digital peak charger? Also, what would I buy from Walmart/Lowes etc to disassemble and turn into a battery pack? I've read a lot, but not 100% on how to put it all together if I wanted to give this a shot!

P.S. Why are the hypersonic batteries so expensive when you can assumably yank the same batteries out of the battery packs for these tools and build them at a fraction of the price.

Hmm, they're all expensive if you ask me. The a123's should be some good packs and I suppose you'll want a 3S or maybe a 4S pack.

Thanks for the response guver.

Any idea what kind of run times these packs would give? I'm not sure if the A123 technology is so different that the mah rating does not equate to NiMh.

IE: Would a 4s 2300 A123 back be similar to a 7.2v 2300 6 cell pack for run times since they would be the same mah rating but different voltage obviously.

I've heard it said that the battery is "more efficient" thus delivering more time than another 2300. I don't buy it. I think 2 batts of 2300 is going to run the exact same time (if they were same voltage)

In your case of comparing a 4S to the 6 cell NI pack: the 4S a-123 is quite a bit more battery being carried around and can show up directly as (more power if the set-ups are identical) becuase of the higher voltage. If the set-up was changed to match power/speed then it can show up as run-time.

A more equal comparison might be 2S a-123 compared to 6 x 2300 nickel pack

A 2S A123 2300 is approx. the same voltage as a 6cell Ni. Major differences are A123 hold volts better during discharge, are lighter,can be charged in 15 min., last much longer, do not need to be cycled, are always ready to run,etc.,etc.

I have ran a traxxas Rustler with a modifieed brushed motor and as Mamba max Brushless Powered with 6 cell 3300 NiMH packs with 2S A123 and 3S A123.

Which are better? Well I have not used my 3300 NiMH packs in over a year now.

Nimh are garbage compared to the A123, when it comes to battery performance.

This is my Basher and weekend Dragster...6S A123. In 3s2p bashing mode, I get tired of driving it around before the battery dies. BTW, your run time is dependent on your gearing, motor choice and driving style.

That looks like an awesome setup. That's about where I'd like to get for my basher! Is that a Mamba Max in there? That thing looks rock solid with all the metal. What kind of speeds do you get out of that setup?

I bash around at about 30mph max with those heavy beadlocks. It turns evil in dragracing mode. It splits untaped rubber tires in half. I have no idea how fast it can go, as I am limited by traction. I gave up gps'ing it after 60MPH more then a year ago....and that was with only 4s1p A123. My GPS cost too much, to get it destroyed in a highspeed crash.

That is the mamba max, which handles the 6s1p fine with a efficient low KV motor. On 3s the ESC stays cold with a C40 12T hacker motor geared for 30mph

This is what happend with the slipper locked and 5s1p. Since then I have gone with a traxxas adapter, eliminating the slipper alltogether.

Batteries are rated by measuring the power they produce when discharged at the 10 hour rate. They will not produce that much capacity when they are discharged at a high rate. The more efficient battery will come closer to the rated value at the high rate.
An alkaline dry battery has a high mah rating. I don't see anyone using those.
