Finishing up a Herr Pitts Special and hit a bit of a potential snag... Got the wing cabanes sanded and fit and the port side cabane is 1/8" short to span the gap between the wings so I added a piece to take up the slack... and then started wondering if this 1/8" difference will make a big impact on flying with this plane? The empanage is squared up with the upper wing. The lower wing is the surface which is off slightly.

Truing up the lower wing would involve altering the lower wing saddle with a shim and then altering the length of the cabanes to match. Looks like I put a little less dihedral than what was called for and the mounting in the saddle is a bit off. On the grand scheme of things, would this be worth the trouble?

Probably not. Of more concern will be squareness of the wings to each other and the fuselage centreline and equal length either side. 1/8" difference in the wing strut length will be peanuts compared to getting one of them wrong in terms of effect when flying.

Thanks for the reply! The upper wing and empanage are squared up to each other and centered. The lower wing is squared up to the empanage and centered on the fuselage as well. Confirmed this before I drilled the mounting holes... apparently I didn't confirm the dihedral when framing up the lower wing close enough.

Measure three times... glue once. Need to add that to my sig.

If that's all that is out of line it won't make a huge difference. But it'll likely do some things a little better in one direction than the other. If that doesn't scare you then I doubt you'll need to do anything about it.

That doesn't scare me though it does sound like I half-assed this... will correct the saddle and struts so this is level. Ever get burned out on a build?

If the lower wing bolts on, it's easy to shim one side of the saddle to true the wing to fuselage angles.

Once that is true, the cabane structure can be fixed so it's saddle hold the top wing to match the bottom.

Then one interplane strut may need some sanding and the other a saddle shim.

I applaud your wish to make it right. We need more flyers who have that pride.
