Many of you already use a similar method of establishing where an engine needs to be positioned on a firewall, but for those that don't or have trouble setting an engine here's a tip. Manufacturers are now providing paper or light ply engine templates for the more popular engines in their kits, which is very nice. What if you aren't using one of the popular engines?

Make a template out of plywood that mimics the backing plate or mounting lugs of your engine. Cut a length of 3/8" wood dowel long enough to extend from the firewall to well past the front of the cowl. Make that dowel long enough and you can use the same template on planes having cowls of different depths. Position the dowel perfectly on the fake backplate and secure it so that it's as straight as humanely possible. The dowel represents the prop shaft of your engine, and it's position and alignment with the faux backplate is critical to good engine positioning.

Use either double sided tape or contact cement to hold the template on the firewall. Whatever you use, make sure it will permit you to lift and reposition the template a few times. Slide a spinner backplate onto the dowel to best align the dowel position (prop shaft) in the cowl opening. When you're satisfied mark the drill points through the template on the firewall and set your engine.

The method is nothing new and has been around a long time but the building/assembly season is once again upon us so releasing the info again may help someone out.

A couple of pics to show how it works out. The engine was picked up just once...to secure it on the firewall. No adjustments were needed.
