I aquired this bizarre old fiberglass fuselage, foam wing core "1/4 Cosmic Wind" kit made by a company called "Sky Glas Fabricators. I even have the original invoice for it, dated 25 MAY 1976, sold from Hobby Lobby. I'm trying to decide if this is worth attempting to complete. What kind of engine does it take? I don't have any tail feathers, so I'd need some dimensions to fabricate those from. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated; I know absolutely nothing about pylon racing planes, but I'd like to learn.

how long is the fuse, and what span are the two cores for the wing?

my one and only experience with a sky glass kit was an ME109, and it came out HEAVY. The fiberglass / gel coat fuse was heavy.

Most likely "1\4" means 1\4 midget. The engine size would probably a hot .15 or maybe a good .25-.32. It looks like you need a new wing core.

Yeah, some of the core was torn off in storage, that's all I have left. I was hoping to splice in and shape some foam to complete it rather than buy a whole new core, which probably isn't even available. But if you guys are saying these were too heavy to even fly well, then maybe it's not worth the effort?

Gelcoat works great for boats, and is a bit heavy for airplanes. But if you go to a larger engine like the OS 32, and have to cut cores, just add to the wing area with a more span and tip chord. More area takes care of the wing loading.

Wow, this brings back memories! I built this plane - Miss Cosmic Wind - for a review in Flying Models magazine sometime in 1976 written by Bob Aberle. I put a Rossi .15 in it with a Pro-Line radio and went out and flew the first time under 1:30 (1:29.88) in Quarter Midget at Bowie on a Saturday. On Sunday a lower time was set in CA by Tom Christopher so my only shot at an official record went down the drain - but I'm more than happy to tell anyone that cares to listen that I was once a record holder! (Yawn!) I also flew Formula 1 that weekend and my fast time in F1 was also a 1:29!! Besides setting fast time in QM I also won both contestant raffles for a Pro-Line and RS radios. This race was also the last time I flew an RC model for almost 14 years!! The next time I got a fast time at a pylon race was this past November in Phoenix - only 31 years later! This bare-bones kit also included sheet metal gear and wheelpants. As mentioned, the gelcoat is very heavy, and must be entirely sanded off. The radio installation was really tight with the old radio equipment but todays stuff should fit well. The plane flew OK at speed, but was a handful after the motor was shut down as it has a very thin airfoil, and came out 1/4 lb overweight at 2 3/4 lbs. Wish I could help more with the tailfeather dimensions but the plans are long gone. Good luck!

Tommy, look up some 3 views drawings for the outline of the tail feathers and then GO FOR IT,,, scratch building can be rewarding. The one thing I would also look for on the drawing is to see if the wings have some dihedral,,, like a degree or 2(?)

As Scott says, with todays RC equipment, it shouldn t be a problem keeping it lite.

Scott,

Do you remember what engine Tom Christopher what running at the time? When the Rossi .15 came out it was killing everyone but Tom had a K&B Schneurle .15 that could run with the Rossi. Tom was an excellent racer so you must have been pretty good to be up there with him.

There were some extremely talented racers in 1/4 midget back then and I still miss seeing those little screamers duking it out.

Back then I was still living in NY and us east coasters knew little of what was going on in California until the magazines came out. Although we in the east stood no chance of competing with the CA guys in Form 1, we could hold our own in QM. I don't know what Tom was flying, but I know he flew a Miss Dara for a while. I would imagine that he was using a Rossi as by that time the difference between the K&B's and the Rossis was pretty large.
