because the super tigre engine is european they are ment to run on low nitro (10%) with a medium plug. But the europeans and duratrax know its going to the american market and they know that the normal nitro driver in the US will probably put higher nitro in it (20%) they tell us to use a colder plug so the engine does not pre ignite and over heat. by the way guys an easy way to prime the engine is open the carb up to full and put your finger over the exhaust hole or carb hole and turn it over a couple times and just watch the fuel go right in (cant do it when its hot though).

also on a side note if you are still overheating with 20% and a cold plug add a head gasket shim http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLDH5&P=7 it helps reduce compression and stops pre-ignition over heating. On newer supertigres they have three head shims, on the old ones (warhead, warhead evo) they used two and caused the infamous over heating issue on 20% nitro gas so if you have three you should be good.

p.s. it just a little knowledge i gained from running there airplane engines for so long (I run a 61 in my ugly stick, and a 3500 in my Zimpro Ultimate 10-300)

So a few more questions. I just finished up tank #2 of the break in.

1) How do I stop the fuel line from the tank to the engine from getting air bubbles in it (which then cause the motor to stop)? I'm 99% sure it gets them when the fuel sloshes around during a turn or a bump. It died 3 or 4 times on this tank of fuel.

2) How come my engine is over 270F and I'm still trying to lean it out? The manual says not to let the motor get over 270F, but the Duratrax IR temp gauge shows me in the mid 280's mid run. Won't leaning out the engine (per the break in procedure) make it get even hotter? FWIW, it still seems to be running rich from the sound and performance.

3) How come the spare glow plugs I bought (DTXG3005) don't look the same as the one that came with the RT-X 27?

Thanks!

Uh... Mine only came with 1 shim. Is that why it's getting so hot when it's still set rich? I have some extra shims from the spare glow plugs I bought. Should I add two for a total of three?

I have actually been using a cordless drill to start my rtx. So far it has worked out pretty well. Only trouble I have had so far is that my gears on the super start back plate have broke. Waiting on new gears right now. For the money this truck is hard to beat. Tower actually has it for 299.99 now online.

I thought about using my cordless drill for that, but it seemed like it would not spin fast enough. It did spin much slower than the RTR starter. I didn't actually try it though.

I use my cordless to start my raze buggy. I set it to screw driver mode so it has a ratchet affect so you don't strip the gear in the starter if the engine locks. It alway starts the engine no problem.

Make sure you have a good SEAL @ the tank lid..use a couple pieces of fuel tubing at the spring to make it tighter. AFA temp goes..Duratrax guide is a MISPRINT so I've been told..yur gonna run btw 270 and 290 all the time for opt. performance w/ 20% AND xtra shims..make sure you have good air flow thru the body..try a Tiger Drive by Sullivan Products they are better than stock roto systems,,,as long as you are running the same temp plug you should be OK, but they do make Turbo head plugs which are bigger, just compare your reach and diameter..hope I could help.. ifya wat the links PM me and I'll e-mail it all for you...Mess..

Just to make sure I understand you correctly, you're also (like motodude11) suggesting I run 3 shims under the glow plug?

Ok thanks, I just wanted to be sure before I damaged something.

FWIW, I called Duratrax, and the guy I talked to said I should only use one shim, and that as long as the temperature was under 300 it was OK and to just keep leaning it out. I asked if leaning it out would make it run hotter and he said yes, but not much. If I'm at ~285F now and still need to turn it 1/4 turn total toward lean over the next three tanks its not going to stay under 300F. He was nice, but I'll take the advice of fellow owners over his.

I also plan to verify that my IR temp gauge is reasonably accurate.

(just to clarify im talking about the HEAD shim it is the shim inbetween the cooling head and the actual engine block) On the newer RTX they seem to have three HEAD shims (some times), mine came with two so i added one HEAD shim and it runs between 250-270 on 20%. My brother inlaws came with three HEAD shims and it ran great outta the box. As for the glow plug shims im not sure they will work? yes it will push the spark farther away from the piston, but the point of doing the shims on the head is to reduce the compression rating inside the engine so it wont pre-ignite i dont think that doing it to the spark would be enough of a change in compression for it to work. But anyways for the $4-5 i'd just buy the shims when you need some other parts. look at the part i posted above that is exactly what you need.

Ok, now that we've clarified which shims we're talking about. I will have to take the motor apart when I get home to check how many shims it has.

If it has 3 already, what are my options if I'm still running very hot but still rich?

I will have to check again but I just got the RT-X 27 and I had the cooling head off and I'm almost positive that there was only one shim.
I am new to the NITRO scene well actually I'm new to the whole rc hobby. I also had a problem with the starter, Starting this motor for break in. This was with a brand new battery, But I just used a drill I had laying around and that worked awesome. Once I ran a few tanks through the motor, The motor starts great with the super start now. But I am waiting on parts now because I ended up running into a tree during a high speed run lol, Broke the front left bulkhead (stripped the screws) Front skid plate, Receiver lid and box as well as the battery lid and box. But one e-mail and the parts were shipped out to me at no cost (StressTech) I will have to say that DURATRAX has some great customer service. Very quick response from the emails and great communication. I am very happy with my purchase so far.

I just took the head off mine and found only two. At first it looked like there was only one, but when I took it out, it separated and I saw I had two. I guess I won't be running it anymore until I get a 3rd one.

One an related note, I couldn't believe how tight those allen bolts were that held the heatsink and head on. I also managed to partially strip one of the bolts and was barely able to get it out, so I need to get another one of those also.

This will be my first real RC car and after having ordered it, I'm finding that parts availability is very limited in my area. Can anyone give me an idea of what the most commonly broken parts are so that I can pre-order them?

Thanks,

Get the cv rebuild kits it you run alot in the dirt. I also sell the large pins that go in the top of the cv shafts and into the drive cups. PM me if you are interested. I sell them cheap just so you don't have to pay 30 bucks for a new pair from duratrax.

Keep in mind they also sell aluminum versions of a lot of the plastic parts too. My plan is to replace things that break with the aluminum versions (where offered).
