I took the rear diff apart today and wow what a job! There seemed to be grease in it but not much the "Differential Pinion Gear" seemed to be a bit worn and sharp I got 7000 weight oil is that ok to use? also do i fill both the differential case and all around the pinion gear

How do you check to see if  the diffs have oil? Remove and disasemble them?

Have you checked if the diffs has some oil? My diffs came completely dry (a few years ago) and thats te way they were coming out of the factory. Have you also checked for bearings? If depends on how you

Hmmm... you see... for sure that was causing the "feeling the gears" thing you felt. This is the way to go:

1. Fill the diff cups ONLY, dont use oil for the pinion - crown gear. If you put oil in there that thing will leak no matter what and it will be a total mess.
2. Use this oil combo: 7K front and 5K rear. (AE oils work great and are cheap)
3. Fill the cups almost full but leave a little space, otherwise the diffs will leak do tue dinamic preassure
4. I found that graphite tends to dry with the time and that sort of dries the o-rings too... use EA Green slime, that thing is the best for orings (every racer uses it)
5. Put the same green slime in the pinion and ring gear, it will stay on the gears and lubricates really well
6. Check for the proper mesh "pinion-ring gear", it shouldnt have too much play but neithet too tight. If they have some play you can use 1 or 2 0.1mm shims

REMEMBER TO PUT LOCTITE ON THE SMALL SCREW THAT GOES INTO THE CUP, IF NOT IT WILL ALWAYS LEAK!!!

One last tip... yo can go to a hardware store and get "better screws" for holding the crown gear to the diff cup. I discovered this after getting my first buggy, all buggies come with longer screws that have a much rougher, bigger, sharper thread. The screws that come with the RTX are kind of short and the thread is a very fine thread, get the same diameter screws but with a more agresive (course) thread, like the ones used for wood. This will hold the crown gear much tighter to the cupp avoiding leakage.

That should have you covered, just be sure to check the seals are in good shape. Usually i change gaskets and orings every time i open my diffs... in my MTs and my racing buggies. I heard that revo orings work a lot better, just check if you can compare them at your LHS (if you have one near) and get them.

Associated Green Slime Grease

Wonder where SKHills went.... I am curious too on what happened. Completely burnt up???? Only can wonder.

I am also having a bit of a hard time with Duratrax Customer Service (CS) as well. I put an order in for spare parts that broke over a month ago (approx. 6 weeks). I emailed them late the week before last and the rep said that a part was due in any day and my order would go out priority mail. Well, it has been another week and a half and I have not received anything from the mailman yet. Mean while I have already moved on and purchased parts and upgrades to keep my RTX running. Just waiting for the promised parts from CS for back up parts.

Hey guys, just bought a used Warhead for my son (a little project for me too) and I am wondering if anyone knows of an adapter to allow the use of my 17mm RTX wheels on the 14mm Warhead. I have 5 sets of mounted wheels for my RTX and dont want to invest any money in more tires and rims. Help would be appreciated.

You could get a set of rtx axels and switch off the ends or use the whole axel and knuckles if you can find them. Even duratrax lists the replacement part for RTX as the warhead axels so you will get what fits the 14 mm hubs. This is the wrong part, obviously....lol!

PM sent your way....

Thanks for the help guys. I found a set of RTX CVDs on ebay. $60 for 4. Saves me having to buy replacement cvds and new tires and rims. The ones from the truck had seen better days and the glue was letting go.
Not sure how bright I am for buying another one of these things...but I like a challenge. Gonna put that ST engine in the Warhead and see what happens.

I put a Nova Head and a Pull-start on this week and after sealing it up, this thing runs great! It starts on the first or second pull, havent seen temps above 220 which kinda worries me cause that seems too low? I took ALFFA's advice and tightened the shift point screw about 3/4 turns in and that made a huge difference, it takes about 40 to 50 ft. before it shifts now, Thanks ALFFA! I'll get some more vids on Youtube once it stops raining here...

Also,
Make sure you use red locktite on the spur gear screws. I've already had to put in a new set. Can't say I wasn't told to do so though!!

Now all your need is some bigger tires, I personally have these and they are MUCH bigger than the stock truggy ties and have a wider tread that gets better bite in a variety of surfaces

No not really, if the engine is 200*> i would begin to worry its running "to cold", oter than that, its a safe temp to run

Thanks Cal,
I had it out today and just ran it up and down the street, full throttle speed runs like 20 times, highest temp was 227* I was trying HARD to heat it up and it was the first time I ran it with the body on..
I drilled a hole in the windshield of the body to try and get some more airflow to the head and I wasnt really sure how to go about it or what to use (i didn't just wanna hack at it with an x-acto).. So i looked all over the house just to find something round for an outline and thought, what about a door knob drill bit, I own one of those! It worked out great, NO body damage at all and took about 2 seconds, the best part is I can reach right in the hole and get to the RX switch.. I'll get er stickered soon, now that it runs good, LOL!!

This writing is related to the supertigre .27 motor. I got what i thought was an awesome deal on the rtx for 200.00 new rtr. I checked her all over for tightness on all main fasteners, and everything was good.

Now to the engine part, i seriously debated pulling it and sealing it up hearing all the rumors concerning this motor. I chose not to instead. I had the main screw set to factory break in specs 4 1/2 turns. My first start up was incredible it purred to life right now idled very nice etc. I broke her in by the book 6 tanks of fuel 20% odonells racing fuel. It slobered on top during break in, the 1/12 turns had little affect, I did vary the throttle guys. The motor ran low temps 170 to 220. I leaned her 1/12 after each tank up to the 6th tank. Still sloppy rich (I did allow cool down time between each tank with the piston at BDC) So on the 8th tank i started tuning for performance, Id say another 1/4 turn lean on the high speed needle added to the (6) 1/12 turns during break in faze. All break in was done on pavement. With the 1/4 turn it came to life no more slobbering and was temping 247 on pavement. I decided to take it on a very short of road hill climb realizing there would be some increase in temps, I brought it back and it was temping 347 ouch!!!! I imediately shut her down steam was rolling off the motor not good indicators to say the least. I let her cool and tried runnning a duratrax gold plug (reccomeded by duratrax per manual). I could get plenty of fuel to the motor trying to restart it but it was a no go, I tried unflooding it a time or 2. I tried a mc 9 Its a cool plug reccomended for big blocks, no go again.

This is crazy, I shipped it off to hobby services for warranty work, when it comes back should i seal the beast before even starting it. I got a raze truggy at a super price to 160.00 rtr. Should I seal the motor before ever firing it also.

I am also wondering about parts availibility for these trucks, I did not know duratrax was discontinuing until after the fact. I don't plan on putting in new motors for truck i cannot find parts for.

For me the rtx shows potential so far i like it except for the motor issues.

I appreciate any help, input, or feedback you all have to offer.

Thanks

This sounds like EVERY Warhead or RTX with the stock engine. I pulled mine and installed an Axial . 28 into the RTX. My brother still runs his RTX stock and fights with temps all the time. Some days are better than others. I just recently installed my stock engine into a Warhead roller I bought on here. I sealed it just prior to removing it from the RTX and didnt run it too much since then. In the Warhead I installed a big Ofna cooling head, and I am using a Motor Saver air filter. I was only able to run 1 tank through it because the one way bearing is now stripped (another problem both my brother and I have with this truck). The temps were around 210-220 on that one tank which is very good for this engine. I also had a similar experience with the smoking engine prior to sealing it, except mine was reading around 400 or more, the exact number escapes me right now! Didnt seem to hurt it but not something I want to repeat.
I wont know how much better it is until I get the new bearing from Tower and can run it a bit more. Whatever the issue is with these engines and temps I think the trick is to tune it very carefully. The slightest turn can make a big difference.
Please post Customer Service's findings as I think we all would like to know what they think about so many hot engines and how to fix them.

I replaced my engine in the warhead with an axial 32. I think the temp problems are related to poor airflow thru the body. I made a large hole in the wind shield and the temps stayed lower. I also have a raze buggy with the same super tigre engine and it would go up to 280 max. I put on a nova cooling head on the raze engine and the temps are around 200 with the nova head. You get a lot more cooling around the engine on the raze buggy. My raze has a lot of get up and go and the engine has run great since I bought it. I have not done anything to the raze engine like sealing it. The nova head I bought off ebay was a great investment.

A 5 day turn around, now that is what I call quick service!! I can't **** about their warranty service. It got a new sleeve, piston and rod no charge. I called their support guy who was very polite and helpful, nice service people, he said no need to seal it, but I did anyways. I have seen the results of sealed engines first hand, and it makes a huge difference in tuning and consistent engine temps, I just hope my luck holds true with this motor now that it is sealed. I am debating whether to break her in by the book again or using the traxxas method. I have read and heard richness really can kill an engine. I've heard you want to hold about 190 temp range no higher or lower, and run a few minutes at at a certain throttle setting bring her in, and let her cool at bdc, do the same again varying throttle you use and time run. Its the heat cycle method. Look and you will find it.
