i had a sportwerks .26v with a ht pipe (drops right in and can use the spin start) when i first got my warhead evo, (now in my lst 2 buggy[:D]) it was insane but i was consistently wrecking the top shaft gears now that its stock again i think its boring compared to my other trucks but at least it doesnt break.

So you are saying im probably gonna rip my gears to pieces if i drop a high end motor in here? I'd rather know right now, rather than later.

motodude11 -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (8/17/2008 1:01 AM)

yea basically the little plastic topshaft gear strips the back where pin is recessed in it also the little pin that holds the top shaft gear breaks with the sportwerks. Everyone seems to have good luck with using less powerful engines like axials and hpi's. But still I wouldn't recommend it........ unless you find a metal top shaft gear that works with the warhead/rt-x transmission, and if you do find one let me know!!!!![;)]

RCCCS -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (8/21/2008 9:04 PM)

does anyone know if there is a spear gear that has less teeth then the stock 49 that will work on this truck?

davido666 -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (8/21/2008 9:14 PM)

No one makes a spur gear for this truck. Your only option is to change the clutch bell. I run an axial 32 in my warhead evo and I have no problems with the gears. I broke the top shaft pin once but that was because I had a work diff gear and pinion that would jam and break the pin.

RCCCS -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (8/21/2008 9:20 PM)

What clutch bell should i use 16-17 tooth? I am getting to top end to quick. and would like a lil more top end not so much torque.

rosh -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (8/25/2008 11:37 AM)

how would you compare the rt-x to the savage?

motodude11 -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (8/25/2008 4:52 PM)

id save up and get a savage if i had to do it all over again or maybe get an mgt heard some good things about those. But since the RT-X is suppose to be a race truck and if you plan on racing save some dough and get a real truck and get an lst2 its fast fun and doesnt break every 2 seconds. Also I love my tmaxx 3.3 too! I just wouldn't buy duratrax again too much bad experience with them [:'(]

pmillette -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/2/2008 2:26 PM)

I am planning to buy a Duratrax RT-X 27 and I want to store a small inventory of parts that commonly break. Can you guys tell me the parts that you had to replace so far and how often these break?

motodude11 -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/2/2008 4:48 PM)

top shaft gear like 5-6 so far, and the dog bones wear pretty quick also but there is a hardened pin mod that davido has that works pretty good (i just bought hardened pins from ace and they work good too)

Stereodude -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/7/2008 11:47 PM)

How hard should the RT-X 27 be to start?

I got a RT-X 27 and the included DuraTrax Kwik-Pit Super Start RTR starter can barely turn the motor over unless the battery is hot off the charger. The battery pack in the Kwik-Pit gets very warm. I would have thought that the starter should have been able to turn the motor over easily. My battery was reading 7.7V open circuit when it wouldn't even turn over the motor anymore. My battery pack is probably ~5 year old. It's a 3000mAH NiMH 6 cell pack made of Panasonic batteries.

I was only able to start the RT-X 27 once (first tank of fuel) with a single charge. I couldn't start it for the 2nd tank of fuel. Now my battery pack is on the charger... :(

Is this typical, or is something wrong with my RT-X 27 or the starter?

Thanks!

ThermalRD -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/8/2008 2:11 AM)

Stereodude, does the starter turn pretty fast? Does it feel strong? I mean you said your battery is 5 years old. Thats pretty old. You could EASILY have a bad connection, or cell in there. So i'd test that with another battery. You'll likely want a better one anyway. Other than that, remember you are still in break-in. These engines have a pretty tight pinch, and start at some really rich settings. During break-in, there are a few things i like to do before starting the engine. First, i like to make sure the glo plug is good. So pull that, and check it on the igniter. Next, turn over the engine a few times with the plug OUT of the engine. That will eliminate the possibility that its flooded from any previous tank, or starting attempts. Very common during break-in. When you are ready to start, loosen that plug just a bit. It will relieve some of the compression from that motor, and it'll be easier to turn over. And always make sure the engine is primed properly before starting. Good luck, and be sure to let us know how you like the RT-X. I also noticed you are in Michigan. Check out the factory tracks thread for monster truck racers. If you are interested in racing at all, or hanging out with us. Some great guys in our MT group. We are always willing to help, and always having fun at the races.

It spun pretty fast.

It did when I first used it.

The battery pack charged up to almost 9V, so I think it's OK. I have another pack, but it's an identical pack from the same vintage.

Better battery pack for the starter, or a better starter? What do you recommend? I also think I need a better charger. I have a 5 year old DuraTrax IntelliPeak AC/DC Pulse Charger, and it false peaks like crazy at higher charge currents, and at lower charge currents it never seems to peak. Or maybe the problem is the packs, but they always have behaved this way on this charger. :(

Thanks for the tips. I followed almost all those the first time I started it up (I didn't try loosening the glow plug slightly). The second time I didn't get very far because starter apparently didn't have enough juice left to turn over the motor.

I was hoping someone sold an A/C powered starter, but I didn't see any at Tower. :( Once the motor is broken in, about how many "starts" can you get out of a battery pack in the starter before having to recharge? Is it only a few, or is it in the 10's of starts?

ThermalRD -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/8/2008 4:55 AM)

The starter that comes with the RT-X is fine. I'd just invest in a better battery pack. Now, the number of starts, all depends on the battery, and mostly how easily that engine is starting. If you sit there cranking it over endlessly, you'll kill a battery fast. Which is the best case scenario. Some of these starters are VERY strong, and can do damage to the engine, and one way bearing in the back plate. So be careful with that. A well tuned, and well primed engine, should start with just a couple taps of the button on that roto start. Once you get break-in done, it'll get better. As for a charger, how much do you want to spend? I like the Novak Ionic charger, because its simple. I use this for mostly everything. It's also very affordable.

Novak Ionic

I've also used the Duratrax pirhana for many many years before it finally had a worn out button. Also a very simple, easy to use charger. (replaced this one with the Novak Ionic)
Duratrax Pirhana

I also have a Team Checkpoint charger, that'll do the Li-po batts. But it doesnt sound like you need something that crazy yet. Honestly, if i were in the market for a charger today, i'd be trying the new Duratrax charger.
Duratrax Onyx

Anyway, hope all that info helps. keep us posted, and enjoy the truck!

the other thing i would do when breaking in a new engine is always put the pistion at bottom dead center so when the piston cools between tanks on the bottom it wont get stuck on top at the pinch. i had two buds break in new engines and we had to take them apart to free up the piston. it's a big pain. good luch

Stereodude -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/9/2008 2:55 AM)

Thanks for all the tips guys! I think I need to put together a Tower Hobbies order. [:D]

Lilredmachine -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/9/2008 4:25 PM)

You definitely need a new pack.

a 5 yr old NIMH pack will be pants by now. It doesn't matter if it reads 9v off the charger, the moment you pull any amps out of those cells their voltage will plummet and the starter will have the power of a seized 2 stroke.

I will do some testing on my old packs when I get back in town, but I really don't think they're bad. They are 5 years old, but they were never used a lot. It's not like they have hundreds of charge discharge cycles on them. They have less than 10 charge/discharge cycles on each pack.

Obviously I know they don't hold as much as a new pack with higher capacity cells, but I cranked the motor over a lot to get fuel into it before trying to start it and then cranked it a lot during the process of getting it started the first time. Still, I plan to get a new higher capacity pack so I can do more cranking before having to recharge.

davido666 -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/9/2008 11:08 PM)

Get a primer ball and it will make it alot easier to start. I put one on my warhead and the engine starts the first time.

That's even worse. The packs might have been ok if they were regularly used and cycled.

here it is

Stereodude -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/11/2008 4:34 AM)

Is there a particular reason why the RT-X 27 use a relatively expensive, cold, racing glow plug? [sm=confused.gif]

messn03 -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/11/2008 11:33 AM)

Probably what they have laying around, Ues a Mcoy MC8...Mess...[:@]

motodude11 -> RE: Anyone Own a RT-X 27? (9/11/2008 4:56 PM)

because the super tigre engine is european they are ment to run on low nitro (10%) with a medium plug. But the europeans and duratrax know its going to the american market and they know that the normal nitro driver in the US will probably put higher nitro in it (20%) they tell us to use a colder plug so the engine does not pre ignite and over heat. by the way guys an easy way to prime the engine is open the carb up to full and put your finger over the exhaust hole or carb hole and turn it over a couple times and just watch the fuel go right in (cant do it when its hot though).

Thanks for the detailed answer and tip. Unfortunately it rained all day, so I didn't get much done other than testing one of my old NiMH battery packs under a fairly light load (16.7 ohms).
