I have mixed up some fuel for my Antique OS S-30 bushed motor.

I started with Wildcat Synthetic/Castor Blend with 15% Nitro and added 6oz of SIG Castor.

Here is where the final ratios came out.

21% Total Lubricant
14% Nitro
64% Methenol

I have been told that 20% Lube is a minimum for this old engine and the greater the content of castor the better. However, the engine runs up to rpm great, but is having an issue with sustaining an Idle.

I am currently using a Fox Plug with idle bar. Could a hotter plug help here, or is the Lube content too high??

These engines really like to have at least half the oil volume as castor with a 20% total lube - I don't know what your blend has produced but it should still idle okay. This engine would probably be happier with 10% or less nitro though -- but I don't think that's the cause of your idle problems.

Try an OS#8 plug. I've found these to be an excellent plug for the older (and newer) OS engines.

Tried an OS #8 and A3.... It accually liked the A3 Much better, but then again it is only 28*F here today.... so that doesn't suprise me too much. And... it idles like a dream now.[:D]

The 1% is mixed between all three values... I just didn't put the .3 and 4. and .3 values with the original post... but, thanks for noticeing... LOL

Synthetic to Castor on my blend is 40% Castor and 60% Synthetic. And boy, does it produce a TON of smoke.....[sm=thumbup.gif]

These engines (30 and 35S) are well known amongst CL fliers where a minimum of 25% all castor is used. This isn't for the piston/liner so much as for the rod which is the weak link. Less than 25% castor and it wears out rather quickly.

Usually, the outside temps don't mean much when picking glow plugs. Some engines just like a hotter plug. Year round.

I did check the connecting rod when I got the engine and there was no slop what so ever in it. My uncle used a home brew of 15% Nitro and 18% all castor blend....


what will be the outcome of my using this fuel for the engine... my uncle was sure that my brew would be more then adequite.... This is the RC version of the motor, not the CL version... It's not running full bore for the whole flight.....


You got me worried now.

You should be just fine, insure you do not have a lean run.

Next time you buy fuel, (if wildcat is what is available), try to get the stuff with 16% oil in it already with the 80/20 synthetic /castor blend. To that, add more castor oil than you did before to bring the total up to 20-22%. That way you will have more castor in the blend (a little closer to a 50/50 ratio than your first attempt) with about the same total oil content. This is only a sugestion.

Thank you fuelman..... I hoped to get a total castor blend of 50% but I fell a little short of the mark this time and I was afraid to add anymore....

I'll get a little closer to the mark next time. I want this engine to last.[;)]
