MrBigg...

The standard Jett-Stream .46 size muffler, JS-40-TT (OS/TT bolt pattern).

I have been playing with the OS55 a bit myself. VERY nice engine. Dub has found that it runs well too.

Our test data is pretty much in line with what Ed found in his OS55/Jett combo. The engine has been impressive.

Key I found is the engine runs at its best when propped to run between 13,500 and 15,000 peak ground rpm (with the stock muffler, or the jett muffler). It runs ok loaded down a bit more, but this is the rpm band where it seems to develop its best power. Does run ok with the stock muffler when loaded down a bit more, and fuel delivery does not seem to be an issue.

Thanks Bob.

I just bought my first OS 55 AX today. What is the general consensus for those of you flying 3D, leave the baffle in the muffler or take it out? Sounds like 13x4 wood is the prop of choice. Has anyone been running the 13x4 wide APC?

I have a OS 91 and 55. Both with the stock muffler. If I remove the baffle would that increase the RPM and little.

Yes, you get more RPM. Also, you get more sound level. I don't know if that is a problem at your field or not. If not and the sound doesn't bother you, I would run it without the baffle.

Fuel draw is slightly reduced by removing the baffle. You will need to readjust the needle valve

I fired up the 55 on the stand today.

WOW, this thing runs awsume.
I did the run in per the manual,on YS 20/20 and ran three more tanks pretty rich, though I leaned it out a bit a few times and had it spinning a apc 12.25x3.75 over 13,000 with plenty more to give. Transitions are pretty smooth allready. I did lean the mix scew 1/4 turn after three tanks though.

I cant wait to fly this bad boy

I try a 10x9 today on my vioer and id not like the speed. The 10x10 I had on before might be the best fit for the viper

I was looking to install a Pitts syle muffler on my 55 ax any one tried this ? If so what were your results ?
I am using the 55 on a CMPpro yak 54 about 5 lbs flying weight pushing a 12x7 prop planning on switching to a 13x4 after about another half gallon of fuel. I am looking to keep my cowl from getting cut up a bunch for the muffler. Hench the question on the Pitts or Slimline or Tat muffler

I'm finally getting around to breaking in my 55AX.

What prop are people using for break in?

I want to prop it to run above 12,000 at a rich 2-cycle setting.

Thanks,
David

I have also just purchased one of these motors. Any suggestions for break in......I'm going to run the OS on my Tiger II. I don't have a break in stand so will have to do it on the plane. Also any suggestions on fuel choice and prop size??

thanks

JJ,

Please go to Richmond R/C... and buy one of these elaborate and inexpensive test stands!

It should likely serve all your purposes forever...

Break-in on your plane is less safe and can create problems that would be hard to diagnose.

After searching the forum for AX55 and 55AX and finding no info on a recommended break-in prop, I went with a wooden Zinger Pro 11x6. I've stopped using APC's for breaking in engines on the stand because I like to hand start new engines to get a feel for their starting characteristics. New engines can kick and even stick at TDC and I have enough slices in my fingers from using APC's. Wooden prop bites can sting, but they don't draw blood. We all know how glow fuel feels in a fresh cut.

Mine started on the first flip and I immediately went to WOT and turned in the HSNV to a rich 2-cycle setting. I only had time for three 3-minute runs and on the third run I pinched the fuel tubing about every ten seconds to rev it up for a few seconds. I will slowly turn the HSNV in on the next few tanks, continuing to pinch the fuel tubing to be sure I'm not going too lean.

I was surprised at how smooth and steady it ran out of the box. I think it will only take about a total of three 8oz tanks before I can mount it in my GP Venus.

I started with a 10x10 on break in and still using the same prop as this motor is on my GP Viper 500
