Two completely separate chargers will work fine. Do not use a common DC Power supply.
John

Funny - as if it were that simple. If you have been getting by like that with known ground-sensing chargers, charging at the same time, then it is purely by luck. I got this response from Robert Ritchey - the owner of Smart-fly. I think he is a reputable/reliable source:
quote:

You CAN charge one battery at a time even with both batteries connected. You CANNOT charge both batteries at once with a single dual-output charger or two separate chargers if they cannot handle the common ground system. These are rules.

IT is that simple. Two completely separate chargers are not effect by a common ground because there is no return path in the chargers. A dual output charger is NOT the same as two individual chargers. Individual chargers using separate DC supplies will work. SIMPLE. I've designed these things for a living. I do know what I'm talking about.

I meant no disrespect. It didn't click when you talked about using separate power supplies - I guess that might play a part.
Still, I like the idea of a single multi-output charger that can handle common ground systems and not need separate power supplies, so I ordered the Ion A123. It will basically be a field charger powered by a deep-cycle battery and I will simply put the plane on charge after each flight - simple, and there will be no question as to the state of charge of my batteries before each flight. Plus, this will allow me to have an ignition/receiver power system that only weighs 14.5 ounces, which is extremely light for a 42% bird...

I have dual batteries, with dual switches into two different ports on my Rxs.

I am charging using the simple Futaba and Prolux slow (non peak) chargers - (50Mah and 100Mah).

Switching on each switch turns the associated charger's light off.

I assume this is OK and will not damage either battery.

Can anyone confirm this.

Is this common ground problem more associated with digital peak chargers or any charger.

It is fine. Both wall warts are transformer powered so their is no return path for the common negative connection on the battery packs.

You only run into trouble using multiple output chargers whose outputs are not isolated internally from each other, or by using a common DC power supply to power mutliple chargers.

John,

Thanks for the reply, Ill continue to use the Futaba slow chargers.

Cheers

So, let me get this right. If I use the standard 50 mah wall chargers and plug each charger into a charge port for my daul battery system. . I dont have to unplug one of the batteries as I would if I used my Hobbico Accu-Cycle Elite???

I believe you are correct about dual power supplies not solving the problem with two chargers. You are still tieing the battery negatives to the positive side of the current sensing resistors of the two chargers with the ground bus of the receiver. The problelm is the "low side current sensing". It gets a little complicated.

Wall wart chargers do not have sensing circuitry in them. They are isolated because they use transformers. There is no return path. You can use them safely.
