It is supposed to be windy all weekend here. If so I will hold off on the maiden for my Pulse XT 60. Yeah, I am chicken. It is just too pretty of a plane to scuff it all up on its first flight.

I think I will look around at the LHS tomorrow and see what kind of hatch latch I can buy for the Pulse. I hate hiking around the club field looking for stray airplane parts.

I still have not run my new Saito 100. How did you guys break in your Saito's ? The manual says to take about 40 minutes running while slowly leaning the mixture over those forty minutes. Did you follow that procedure ? This is my first four stroke, by the way.

Bob,
Break in your engine as the manufacturer recommends so that you don't void the warranty and be sure to use a fuel that has some Castor Oil mixed in. Also, a review of Bill Robinson's "Complete Saito notes" ( http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5843055/tm.htm ) in the engine forum has loads of tips for Operating Saito engines.

At first I couldn't get my saito 100 to start. The owner of the lhs showed up and helped me and turns out saito ships the engines with the high speed needle turned all the way closed. He opened it up started it and set the high and low needles to be rich enough for the break in period. We ran it for just a couple minutes to make sure everything was ok and off it was for its first flight. It has ran perfectly every flight, 7 so far and hasn't dead sticked once and starts right up everytime. He told me just to vary my throttle while flying for a couple gallons and not to run it wot for long periods of time to let it break in. I am running cool power heli 30% and it tached at 9800 with a 14x8 apc prop the way he set it for me. Your gonna love this engine and plane.

* I am not saying this is the correct way to break it in, this is just what was done to mine. I know YS recomends breaking in thier engines in the air for better cooling. I read the 40 minute thing but after not being able to even get it started on my own I didnt really want to tell the guy that just made it run like a top he was wrong...

Ran my Saito 100 for six tanks of fuel for its break in this morning at the club field. On the engines very first start it started so quickly and easily it startled me. I touched the starter to the spinnner and two seconds later the Saito was running.

My lack of experience with a four stroke made me hesitant to adjust the low speed mixture screw. As a result the engine would not idle slow enough for the Pulse to sit still on the runway. Plus the engine would stall at low RPM's. The wind picked up pretty good to boot. All these put together made me chicken out for the maiden this morning. I did taxi out and line up then the engine died from the low RPM and very rich low speed screw setting. I am glad it did. I cleaned up and put the Pulse away until tomorrow morning. I stopped at the LHS and was told to not worry about the engine as I ran it enough to peak the high end and back off 300 RPM then lean the low end for a smooth idle and transition and fly.

I still will not take it up if the winds are blowing in the moring. The forecast is saying the winds will be 4 ~ 5 MPH up to about 11:00 then pick up a little more. If that really happens it will be perfect as I usually get to the field by about 7:30.

I had trouble with my hatch flying off while the engine was running on the bench. The fuel tank does slide back with vibration. My foam was not stiff enough to stop the movement. I have that fixed now. The hatch will be taped down for flying tomorrow. I bought a hatch latch at the LHS today but am not going to use it as it is too small. The glueing surface is too small to be effective for the shaking a 100 four stroke will give it also. Anyone know the brand and name of a good hatch latch ?

Bob,
The fix I used is ridiculously easy. See the attached photo. One medium rubber band and a small servo screw is all that is needed. The screw holds the rubber band on the underside of the tank tray and the other end is attached to the hatch as shown. This will provide plenty of hold down but still allow easy access to the underside of the hatch. Works great! The winds will be fine here in St. Augustine so you should have a great time with your Pulse where you are. It has a very light wing loading and will float a mile on landing. Strong winds are NOT its friend. When setting your low end needle, only lean it about 1/8 turn at a time and wait 3-5 secinds for the effect to manifest itself. Enjoy.

Sounds great guys. Haven't got one yet but it looks like
a good home for my .61FX with a MACS muffler. I got over the
GP Super Skybolt idea as I got to fly one the other day,
I liked it but, like I said before, I'll take an H9 over a GP
any day. (Another BIG plus as with most H9's is the completeness of
assembly, price and especially quality over the GP models)

I've got everything I need for this girl sitting in a box:

4-new Spektrum DS821's
1-new Spektrum 1100 Mah 4cell NiCd pack
1-Hitec HS-6635HB for the rudder
1-Hitec Electron-6 RX
All the servo extensions and a few standard servos for a choice of throttle servo.
Hey, $$$$ are tight so I want to use what I have!

I noticed a couple of things I would like to ask:

Will the Rx pack mentioned above be advised? I noticed they recommended a 1500Mah NiMh.
Reason I ask this is I have never flown those servos and packs and would like to know
if this stuff is dependable????? I've heard mixed feelings on the JR/Spektrum DS821's.

Also, I noticed the assembly doesn't call for epoxying the wing halves. Have any of you epoxied
the wing halves together or is it pretty solid as a two piece?????

Thanx!

BTW...I love what you did there silver! Makes me want to ditch the 2-stroke!
You aint kidding about the winds here in FL...they're persistent. Should
be improving over the next couple of days after this weak front decides what it wants
to do but, get ready for the HEAT!

Have Fun!

Sportflyr, digital servos are big current hogs and the DS 821 is digital. I recommend you go with the 1500 ma or larger battery. I'm using DS 821's and I'm running a 1600 ma low impedance NiMH battery. You definately don't want to run out of juice while up in the air because that can only spell DISASTER.

Got it, thanks.

I run homemade 5 cell 2650mah, or so, packs in my stuff with digital servos. I get the cells from Walmart in the camera section. Usually EverReady or Duracell rechargeable nimh AA cells. Shrink wrap to fit from a variety of sources. Battery bars to solder the cells together from 1/16" X 1/4" solid copper bars in the K&S rack at the LHS. A 12" stick will yield about 18 ~ 20 bars for a couple of bucks. A five cell 2650mah pack complete with connectors costs me under $15.00, if I am remembering correctly. I need another pack for a Twist 150 I am readying for flight next weekend so I will find the current cost soon enough.

I maidened my Pulse XT 60 this morning. Takes off and lands like a high wing trainer. Never even touched the trim buttons on the JR9303. Hands off straight and level flight out of the box, so to speak. Inside and outside loops, hammer heads, waterfalls, stalls with a spin, knife edge and some other stuff that does not have a name. The Pulse handled them all in the hands of this lightly experienced pilot.

I am a happy Pulse 60 owner at this time. Now if I can make the Saito 100 idle reilably at about 1850 RPM so the plane will stop rolling on the runway I will be even happier.

Thanks Birman, I'll take the advice.

Bayward, is it really that easy to fly? I'm trying to further
my flying skills as I already own a low wing (Kyosho Calmato Sports)
and have been flying it for about 2 years and completely
bored with it. It flys great but, I see that the tail coupling on the Pulses is shorter than
the Calmato so it should make snaps and spins a little more interesting.

Would any of you recommend this as something for someone who is
beyond the low-wing, semi-symmetrical aerobatic stage or would
you go with an Extra, Edge or similar aerobat ? Will I get bored with this quickly?
Sorry for all the questions but I haven't been to the field in 2 weeks and I'm jonesin'
for something new to fly. What about the wing...anybody epoxying the halves together?

Two years ???? I have never had a plane last that long. You are not pushing your envelope hard enough.

I have never flown or knowingly watched your Kyosho fly. Howver, judging by the looks of the Kyosho I think the flight characteristics of the Kyosho will be quite similar to the Pulse airplanes. It looks like the wing loading is lighter with the Pulse which will make the Pulse more responsive though.

You want something more challenging ? Take up helicopters. That is what I am doing.
