Following the success of my youngest daughter's trainer... http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6735417/tm.htm We started building a plane for child #2 today. We are building a scaled down Debonair, because that's what we can build with the materials that are lying around. I'm hoping it will fly with a .25LA that I'm going to rob from my GNAT. I'm optimistic, because the last plane, which was much bigger, is way overpowered with a ST40. If it seems like it'll be too much for it, my LHS still has some .40LA's in stock. It won't need more than that. Here is the fuse and the wing. The fuse is 36" long, and the wingspan is 48" with about a 9" chord and 3" of dihedral. Has anybody else built a Debonair .25?

that should fly ok with a 25. I have done the das plas stick. it has an old os 40 and it flys really fast, basicly the same dimensions but with the RNAF wing, just a little less weight. that super tiger 40 is a ball bearing rig and it has alot more power than an os 40la. you could also put some lightening holes in the fusaloge and cover with packing tape

Here is today's progress. I fit the engine mount to the firewall, drilled a 15/16 hole for the fuel tank stopper to come through the middle, stapled a strap to hold the fuel tank in place, removed the engine from my Gnat (sob) and mounted it to the new engine mount. I also got the nose wheel mounted. I installed two landing gear blocks in the fuse - one at the trailing edge for trike gear, and another at the leading edge, in case we decide to convert to a taildragger. I also weighed everything so far: Bare fuselage = 13 oz Wing = 14 oz Engine mount, nosewheel, tank assembly = 17 oz I also weighed the four servos and they are another 6 oz. That's just over three pounds, and I still need landing gear, tailfeathers, RX, battery, and pushrods. I figure it will come in a little under four pounds. That seems to be in the ballpark of say, an LT-25. I still think the .25 will fly it.

Here it is with the landing gear and tailfeathers complete. I really like the looks of this thing. I think it's my best looking SPAD yet. Hopefully it looks as good when she finishes "decorating" it. [:D]

looks great!! it will fly like a dream, may 20% enlarged deb flys better then the original. if you find it a little heavy, get some 2 mil and make an RNAF wing, that will help. I am doing that for all of my 40 size with 48" wing span. enjoy and keep the progress and maiden flight posted

I think it's a 2". I pulled the whole engine off of my Gnat, and I can't remember what exactly I put on it. We'll be at least another week getting the radio gear and linkages installed. By then I hope the weather has improved for some flying.

The new trainer is ready to fly. I wanted to get a couple of pictures of it before she starts 'decorating'. She has mentioned flames as a possible scheme.

We decorated it today with Emily's color scheme. It's just monocot trim sheet material and some car decals.

Not yet. Lately I have only been able to fly when the kids are in school, and I would not dare fly her plane without her. She did bring it to our club meeting last week to show it off. She got a lot of compliments as was a very proud kid. We have a fun fly this Sunday. I have my fingers crossed that we can get this trainer, and a couple of other recent builds, in the air. I will try to get videos of all of them posted. Thanks for asking.

This thing flies as good as any plane I have. It is as stable as my Alpha trainer, and maneuvers much better. The takeoff roll was longer than most of my planes, but once in the air, the .25LA pulls this thing fine. It doesn't exactly have power to spare, but it has plenty for a trainer. After about 1 minute of flight, I was comfortably doing loops, rolls, inverted flight, and it landed beautifully. The only thing it wouldn't do for me was an outside loop.
