Hi all,

Last weeks I have tested some gearboxes in my Tiger

1. HL metal gear. Ratio 40:1. Whitecap 6500rpm motor
2. Tamtoys metal gear. Ratio 120:1 Blackcap 18000rpm motor
3. Tamtoys metal gear “Stug”. Ratio 67:1 Blackcap 12000rpm motor

All gears were treated the usual way, run in/shimmed/greased and then tested in tank. All measurements (Volt/Amperes/Rpm) were made under the same circumstances. (Same instruments, tracks on and battery pack topped up) Ampere/Watt was measured two ways, with tracks off the ground and tracks skidding on the workbench (steel plate)

Tiger 1
Standard HL 7,2V/1700mah NiCad battery pack
Metal tracks/Wheels
El-Mod electronics.

HL Mg 40:1

Pros.
Metal gears
Hi torque motors
Cons.
Wobbly gearwheels
Wobbly drive shafts

Tamtoys 120:1

Pros.
Metal gears
Possible to use other hi revving motors
Drive shafts running in ball bearings
Ejection marks on gearwheels eliminated
Gear case prepared with a hole for metal suspension mod.
Loads of torque

Cons.
Wobbly gearwheels
Wobbly drive shafts (space between shaft and inner ring of bearing could vary very much, up to 0,2mm)
Noisy (Despite careful running in)

Tamtoys 67:1 “Stug”

Pros.
Machined, not cast metal gears
Drive shafts running in ball bearings
Quiet
Sturdy gear case
Drive shaft, steady as a rock!
Grub screws Loctited
Low profile

Cons.
Grub screws Loctited (get a pair of new hex keys before you try to loosen these ones!)
You are stuck with the short can motors, if you don’t make an angled gear case mount for one of the motors.

Well, Ive also made a chart for the tested gears with calculated torque (Newton) for the actual setups so we can compare each one (I hope i got those calculations right...if not, feel free to correct me)

Regards Jake
