I went to the field today with a new 35% Extra 300, maiden flight. I had decided to use this plane to test several new ideas and setups, I figured none of them were real high risk so what the heck.

The main objective was to find out how ther DA-85 works in this plane. I have several customers who promised to give me feedback but none have come through, so I did it myself.

I believe the performance with the DA-85 was better than with the 100. My recollection of the DA-100 performance goes back at least 6 months, that's how long ago we did that test so it's a little hazy. But today's flight proved to me that this is the right combination. The plane is 2 pounds lighter than with the 100 and I think it has as much power. Flight performance was excellent. Vertical is unlimited and very impressive. I am not a hoverer but I am quite certain that pullout of a hover will be excellent. I used an MTW header with a K&S 95V4 muffler.

In other areas the Extra is really great. Totally controllable snaps were very easy. After 5 minutes practice anybody should be able to make a snap stop right where they want.

Some other important information; I used a 2 7/8" engine spacer. I used Hitec 985s on ailerons with a y cable to each side. It was no big trick to match them, and 985s are very underrated servos. I use a single 8711 on the rudder and 5955 on each elevator. I used 1.25" arms on the ailerons, 1.5" arms on the elevators and a 3" arms on the rudder. 3D throws available everywhere. I used the rear wing tube socket to get a good balance, showing just how light this engine is. Fortunately the plane has two wing locations or I'd have been pretty well screwed.

More weight could be lost from the nose. An Esprit models fiberglass or CF spinner would save 5-6 ounces, and a wood prop in place of the Mejzlik 27-10th would save still more, probably 3-4 ounces. I did not weigh the plane yet but I expect to get about 26 lbs. With this type of performance from this airplane the Sukhoi, which is 1 lb. lighter, will also be excellent with the DA-85.

I used the new AR9100 receiver with dual A123 2300mah packs. No switch except the soft-off switch that came with the receiver. Do not put another switch in-line, it's just something to fail. Go directly from the battery into the receiver (or through your regulator if you are using lipo or lion batteries). There is nothing magical about it, works as advertised. With full 6.6 volts getting out to te servos you would not believe how fast they are.

I powered my ignition from one of the receiver packs, I just made a Y cable that pulls power off to a servo extension to the ignition. I* also routed the balance line to the white wire, and made up an adapter for my Cellpro 4s charger so I can now charge through the ignition switch charge jack or through the servo extension.

This setup caused absolutely no problems, I find it a greaty way to save weight ans till have redundancy at the receiver.

I only made 1 flight due to time constraints, the Super Bowl is today, but I'll have more info when I get a chance to put a few more flights on it.

That DA-85 is a beast on 26-27" props. Mine rips a 26A oh so easy 6900-7k on a pitts muffler after I land. I am looking to up to a 27A when i get back out for the warmer weather......

Bryan:

The DA-100 is as good, but not better. It looks better because you don't need to cut out the bottom of the cowl. If you're getting a good deal I'd say go for it, but if you had to lay out cash I definitely would use the 85.

Update on weights;

The plane RTF weighed 26.5 lbs. It does not NEED to be lighter, as it is it flies beautifully and lands like a feather. And a DA-100 will take it to about 28 lbs, still perfectly acceptable.

But if you are a weight freak, there is still plenty of rrom for weight savings;

Pitts muffler saves about 12 ounces or more.
Single A123 battery pack would save 6 oz, and still fly it at least 5 flights without a recharge which only takes 15 minutews.
Wood prop would save 3 oz.
Esprit fiberglass spinner saves about 5 oz.

This is a savings of over 1 1/2 lbs, bringing the plane down to 25 lbs. flying weight. Note I did not include anything expensive here, everything I suggest to save weight also saves money. These weight saving features also save over $200 cost.

Tom, I wonder if there is a performance loss going from the header and cannister to the wrap-around Pitts. What do you think?

I have heard that it's about the same, but very noisy. I'll take the canister.

Noisy? There was one at the field yesterday with the pitts, I'd say its more like a bark! I've been thinking about one of these but now it will have to have a canister!
